They don’t like integration, they like America. In their eyes immigrants will never be American regardless of how they act, they just think the American way of life is the only acceptable way of life, regardless of location.

Well, sure, war is rarely profitable for the participants, but it’s very often profitable for the giant corporations in charge of supplying the weapons and other gear, and who lobby heavily to ensure the people who are willing to make up a reason to go to war are also the ones who get to decide whether to go to war. War is nothing more than another corporate profit push at the expense of the populace.

World News@lemmy.world•US tech firms successfully lobbied EU to keep datacentre emissions secretEnglish
2·3 days agoIt said they lobbied for it, which means that the politicians don’t care, so they give them something they do care about so that they support it anyway, namely money.
It’s the whole reason 99% of politicians choose that career in the first place. All they have to do is look like they don’t support something that the wealthy want them to support, and they’ll be given buckets of money to sway their vote.
This isn’t 2 things; Trump is a part of the billionaire class. They’re just not being specific enough, mostly because many of them work for the billionaire class.
I had to learn this quick when I lived in Philadelphia for a couple years. Works great everywhere else, too!
She probably assumes the landing location is entirely random, which is ridiculous to anyone who has even the slightest understanding of the amount of planning needed for space travel, but those people and the people who believe space travel is fake are not the same people.

Gardening@lemmy.world•Where do you get your plants and supplies?English
5·8 days agoI get my pots from thrift stores and garage sales. A lot of time it’s just pottery that’s not meant to be for plants, but it usually works. It’s usually pretty easy to drill a hole or two in the bottom to let excess water drip out.
I usually put regular plates under the pots to catch the excess water, also usually collected from thrift stores and garage sales. I try to collect interesting ones when I can, but I also just have some in bulk for when I need a bunch.
For the plants themselves I often grab clippings from people I know if they have something I like. They usually like sharing. If I’m looking for something specific I’ll usually buy seeds online.

5·10 days agoAt least apologists, yeah. The amount of people who I’ve seen say “Yeah, the Epstein files are concerning, but…” has killed any hope I had that they might come around someday. Instead I’m all in for getting kids into politics early enough for them to form their own opinions instead of those of their parents.
I wake up at 5 for my workout simply because I’m a morning person, and I like getting it out of the way first thing. It’s also a nice, calm time, which helps me rest more effectively between reps. Plus I’m still half asleep when I start, so I skip over the feelings of “I don’t want to do this,” since I’m already doing it by the time I’m awake enough to have those thoughts.
Yeah, I read that rule and was worried those would have to stop. I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve seen so far, and would like to see similar posts be allowed to continue.

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•They probably meet in Zuck's underground bunker lair nowEnglish
10·11 days agoYeah, we like to glorify individuals, but just about every big endeavor, both good and bad, comes from people working together. An organization like Epstein’s Island was big enough that it definitely had more people running it than just the 2 big players we know about. Someone from upper management seized the reins and has things running smoothly again by now, I’m sure. We shouldn’t be acting like things have been halted - there’s still a lot of work to be done to save the victims of the wealthy.
Well, yes, if third party was already a large enough community to even come close to rivaling the 2 established parties, people would be more likely to view it as an acceptable alternative, but that’s putting the cart before the horse - it requires success to have already been achieved in order to start seeing success. We would need to find a way to get people to convert without having an established community, because that’s how we would start building a community.
Sure, we’ve got over a million people who vote 3rd party in presidential elections, but that’s a tiny number when you’re spreading that group out across the entire US. I’m literally the only person I know in real life who thinks the Democratic party isn’t acceptably politically left, and I know a good amount of people - there simply isn’t a community for 3rd party in my social circle, and I’m in a blue state.
I’m tired of the whole “if a bunch of people suddenly start caring, we’ll change the world!” I just don’t believe that such a scenario will ever happen. People don’t just start caring out of the blue; we need to find a way of forcing real, observable change with only the numbers we already have right now. People will start to join in once that happens, but I just don’t have a clue how that can be done, or if it’s even possible.
You act like there’s a way to get a republican to not vote republican. Hell, I don’t even know if there’s a way to get most democrats to not vote democrat. People don’t like having to think about a choice they already made. They’ve got their favorite political sports team, and they’ll wear those colors until they die.
Even my father in law, who is one of the most politically left people I know in real life, and has a degree in political science, thinks that anything more left than Obama is too far left. I’ve been trying to get him to admit that Bernie would be a better president than Obama for over 8 years now. If I can’t even change his mind, what chance to I have to change the minds of people who honestly think Trump is a viable choice?

Just grabbed a couple albums from the Tejon Street Corner Thieves the other day - good stuff! I’ll have to give those other bands a listen as well!
