I have a car who used to jump onto the sides of the tub while I bathe… until the time she fell in.

Thankfully she was stunned by her misstep on top of being a very calm cat, so I didn’t end up with a flurry of claws stuck in me.

Ultima III for Apple ][ in 1983. Paid with months of saved up allowance. So damned worth it.

Fun side note… I bought it from the same computer store where I nearly bowled over Robin Williams in 1984 (Santa Rosa, CA). I was very aware of who he was, having grown up watching Mork and Mindy and watched one of his standup specials a LOT of times.

I was wandering around the games case, fixated on said games and noticed a person out of the corner of my eye right before slamming into them. And it was HIM. I couldn’t say a word. And he looked as if he couldn’t figure out this weird nerd and just moved around me.

I still think back on that day frequently enough.

Trial by fire basically.

Shut in introvert who struggled with basic conversation with strangers morphed into somehow who can feign extroversion the well enough after long enough in IT.

I still hate parties and most larger social gatherings, but I can at least manage without wanting to curl into a ball. For the most part.

I’m about the same age and very vaguely remember being aware of him in the late 70s. I assume my “let me pull apart distressed companies for profit” father had something of his that was just so glaringly awful to look at.

By the time he was pushing into the greater media bubble, it was painfully obvious he was the worst kind of gold plated clown.
