about

The Shell are:

Leigh Chorlton - drums
Simon Kirby - modular synthesiser
Andrew Ostler - saxophone

The Shell formed out of the mid 2020s experimental music scene in Scotland, bringing together influences from the long histories of jazz and electronic music. They stretch the traditional notions of an improvising three piece by employing drums, modular synthesisers, and electronically augmented saxophone. Musically, they move seamlessly between ambient, free jazz, minimalism, driving kosmische rhythms, and an all-encompassing apocalyptic sound that ebbs and flows across the three pieces here.

To create their unique sonic palette, The Shell use musical instruments custom designed for the band by synthesiser company, Expert Sleepers. These form part of Kirby’s modular synthesiser, add texture to Chorlton’s drumming, and are integrated into Ostler’s saxophone pedalboard. This collaboration between band and instrument maker allows The Shell to perform rich improvised orchestrations live without any pre-recorded sequences or samples. Each side of this album was recorded as a single take to allow the band to recreate the spontaneous energy of their on-stage performances.
