In 2023, Kevin Richard Martin (aka The Bug) informed online retailer Boomkat that his album of the year was Visitors by Japanese singer Friday Night Plans. Three years later, his first collaboration with F.N.P. (aka Masumi) arrives via his PRESSURE label. A swift follow-up to The Bug's critically acclaimed Ladybug 1 collaboration with Dis Fig, this six-track EP, Ladybug 2, is no less zonal… possibly even more so. Seriously wrecked.

Listening to 'Miss U', it's immediately apparent that Masumi's melancholic, there-not-there, hushed vocal is a perfect fit for Martin's disintegrating dubs. The title track swerves between flotation and evaporation as levitating keyboard chords and a plunging bassline map out a psychological and sonic abyss that the Tokyo-based torch singer glides over, before sinking ever deeper into it.

Dreamy, delirious and teetering on the verge of breakdown, the 'Broken' dubs and versions groove further out in their quest to become utterly buried in sound, balancing the eternal swoon of shoegaze with the disembodied dub that fuelled the finest output of Berlin's legendary Chain Reaction label. Mid-range fuzz and low-end sub combine irresistibly to form an audio painkiller that sounds like the lovechild of prime Vladislav Delay and Lush, albeit with a monstrous bassline to numb the pain.

Drugged to the eyeballs and heavily sedated, the overall sound of 'Miss U' and its fragmented versions is blurred and blue, yet shockingly catchy. In fact, the 'Broken Mix' hints at My Bloody Valentine's 'Slow' dub mixed at Lee Perry's Black Ark on very bad weed, pitched down to a brutally slow tempo. Tripped and paranoid, drifting melody and mixing-desk sorcery combine in weirdly perfect harmony.

Six variations on the heaviest of dub themes, Ladybug 2 pulls you deep into its floating soundworld of submerged emotion and bass pressure, evoking a dream journey from Twin Peaks to Kingston, Jamaica, via Bristol.
