Retail sales in Hong Kong rose 2.9% year-on-year in August 2026, accelerating from an upwardly revised 2.4% in July and marking the strongest growth since May. Sales of consumer durable goods surged (13.4% vs 2.5% in July), led by electrical goods (28.5% vs 11.6%), while growth also picked up for food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco (1.5% vs 1.2%) and other consumer goods (6.2% vs 5.5%). Moreover, sales rebounded for supermarkets (1.5% vs -0.1%) and clothing, footwear and allied products (0.3% vs -2.1%), while the decline in fuels eased (-24.2% vs -27.8%). In contrast, sales fell for jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (-1.6% vs 9.6%) and department stores (-2.8% vs 0.3%).
