It’s not something I’ve thought about before but China hasn’t shown that they’ve got that MAD dog in them. Russia has, Iran has, DPRK has, but there’s a case to be made that China won’t actually do it.

I think that is a completely incorrect reading but I wonder if it is something that China is currently considering. The perception that you are too dangerous to fuck with goes a long way and it probably makes sense for China to put that question to rest within the next 5-10 years, particularly with how committed the US is to becoming increasingly unhinged.

I think that there are guys left at the top of the command structure at this point that make Michael Flynn look like Napoleon. They operate exclusively on magical thinking and Trump loves them for that. Couple that with Trump’s goldfish-like memory and attention span and you can see how he might think they told him a few hundred troops.

My bet is on one of these bloodless freaks telling him that it would only take a few hundred Delta/SEALS to actively perform the underground operation at Isfahan and then “some other amount of support troops.” Tell him about the handsome operators, be vague about the rest because he’ll have stopped listening by then, war is over by Christmas, boom, operation is a go.

The thing is, we absolutely could remove the uranium from Isfahan. Soldiers will fight even in hellish conditions. The Soviets had no real choice but to make a stand in Stalingrad, but the Nazis eagerly fed their own men into the meat grinder for months. If it was a truly existential threat we would commit to the years-long effort and lose the many thousands of troops it would take and we would get the job done. The problem there is that who gives a shit if they’ve got 60% enriched uranium that even if it was weapons-grade they still couldn’t get into our hemisphere.

Even if we knew for a fact that everything they had was in one location, it still wouldn’t be worth attacking. We don’t know that for certain and in fact it’s reasonable to assume that Iran has had already planned for this and moved smaller stockpiles to other locations. The fact that we’re even considering an operation like that is a clear sign that the horse has already left the barn.

I was going to make both of these jokes then I realized that there’s no way someone didn’t already make them within the first 20 minutes of the post.

If those generals were still around we would have never attacked Iran like that. Whoever is left in the senior positions at this point are fully disconnected from reality.

My lab is fine, of course, because I saw this coming and I ordered my lab staff to buy a one-year supply weeks ago. We already have it in place. So we’re still up and running with plenty of helium.
