News@lemmy.world•EPA eliminates mention of fossil fuels in website on warming's causes. Scientists call it misleadingEnglish
6·4 months agoFrom my perspective, the climate issue is not easy to fix but it is easy to understand.
The planet closest to the sun is Mercury. On Mercury a day is equivalent to 88 days on Earth. In sunlight Mercury can be as hot as 420 °C (790 °F). In darkness Mercury can be as low as −170 °C (−270 °F). The reason for the difference is that Mercury has no atmosphere and is unable to retain heat.
Now lets look at Venus. A day on Venus is 116.75 Earth days. The daytime and nighttime temperatures on Venus are nearly identical and have an average of 464 °C (867 °F). Venus has a very dense atmosphere that is mainly composed of carbon dioxide (96.5%) with the remainder being mostly nitrogen.
The sun may be the source of the heat, but the reason it stays warmer or colder on our planet is directly related to how much carbon dioxide is present in the atmosphere. Increasing carbon dioxide makes us warmer and decreasing carbon dioxide makes us cooler. There are other factors, but those are the basics.
The only practical control we have on carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is controlling and moderating our use of fossil fuel.
It really is that simple.
The fourth frame depicts a man getting arrested for using a stolen credit card at a Chinese restaurant. It takes several officers to arrest him and he is humorously vocal about what the police are doing. The incident is known as Democracy Manifest.

News@lemmy.world•Raging Stephen Miller Suggests Slapping Handcuffs on Blue State GovernorEnglish
82·6 months agoSo Miller is mad because the governor won’t protect the invading army of thugs? Is that what this is? He can’t be serious. 🙄
You can use a smart plug to remotely control power to the Raspberry Pi.
If you enable Wake-on-LAN in the server BIOS, the Raspberry Pi can use Etherwake to power up the server when needed.
To connect to the Pi, I would suggest using a Pi4 or Pi5 and remote into it via Raspberry Pi Connect. That will give you secure remote access to the Pi.

Technology@lemmy.world•95% of Companies See ‘Zero Return’ on $30 Billion Generative AI Spend, MIT Report FindsEnglish
134·8 months agoI have no proof, but I feel like the AI push and Turnip getting re-elected and his regression of the EPA rules sounds like this whole AI thing was an excuse to burn more fossil fuels.
If I was invested in AI, and considering AI’s thirst for electricity, I would absolutely make a similar investment in energy. That way, as the AI server farms suck up the electricity I would get at least some of that money back from the energy market.
Read it backwards.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•I did not look up how progressive lenses really work before getting some.English
38·8 months agoProgressive lenses are complete garbage! The fact that you need to wear them for several days for your eyes (and your brain) to adjust to them speaks volumes. Keep in mind you will also see very poorly for the first few days.
I got some progressive lenses for my second ever pair of glasses. My first pair did not have bifocal lenses. I wore the progressive lens glasses for a few minutes in the store. Took them off, drove home, and tried to wear them at home. I hated them so much that I went back the same day and returned them. I have had lined bifocals ever since and have not regretted it one little bit.
Not clanker but simply: Clank!

News@lemmy.world•A new toxic metal (beryllium) has been found in the air after L.A. fires. No one knows where it’s coming fromEnglish
53·9 months agoNot a scientist, but I am wondering if maybe beryllium could be found naturally in the soil?
Another thought: Wikipedia says that the gemstones emerald and aquamarine contain beryllium. Thousands of houses were burned in the fire. Maybe the source is burned gemstones in the houses?

I must say, the butter is the only one these I would actually buy. Even then, only if I was going to make toast or something. I use store brand butter for baking.

News@lemmy.world•Trump officials quietly move to reverse bans on toxic ‘forever chemicals’English
15·1 year agoIf you look at this from Turnip’s point of view, it’s about both profit and stalling or stopping any lawsuits related to these chemicals. A personal injury lawsuit is more difficult to prove if the use of those chemicals is not banned. It’s about selfishness and helping his wealthy friends who will now owe him a favor.

News@lemmy.world•Elon Musk publicly supports call for US to exit NATO, UNEnglish
77·1 year agoI get what you are saying, The kid is not the problem though. Describing the child as a “meat shield” is not a dig against the kid. It’s about what Elon Musk, the child’s father, is doing to him. Elon Musk is wearing his own son over his head to keep from getting shot when he goes outside. He is using his own child as a human shield. Elon Musk has turned his own flesh and blood into a meat shield!

My stance is not anti-Semitic, it is humanistic. I am against any government that insists on murdering and/or marginalizing any group of people. I would boycott my own government right now if I could. My government sucks! China sucks! Israel sucks!
It’s not about identity, it’s about decency. Stop killing other people!
