  • Good luck adding drm to a microwave to prevent it from microwaving “fish and fish adjacent shapes”. 3d printers consist of a couple of motors and a hot bit. No computer in there, unless you go for the high end stuff and even then they can’t run that sort of software. MCUs are clocked in MHz, but even a 10 year old computer is clocked in GHz. Even with a cloud connections, how much money have companies poured into “AI” only to have it still get things wrong? Do lawmakers expect a podunk garage team to figure out what Google, Meta, Apple, and literal billions of R&D haven’t?

Since this is effectively a ban, it would result in “healthcare CEO shot by wooden ghost gun” if gun kits are still sold, because 3d printers don’t print guns. They print the “lower” that has the serial number, which is legally, but not practically, defined to be the “gun”. Any gun that doesn’t have a serial is a ghost gun, but the point is moot.

More realistically, it would result in: “healthcare CEO shot by a 2026 special edition 9mm VEHHFU746582 on sale for 1984$, get it before it is banned” because for some reason the legislature is running on rich people feelings, and this shooting is special because of the gun, and not because of EVERYTHING ELSE.

Not super into guns but I’m a bit frustrated with the technical ineptitude of some of these lawmakers. Gun control existed before 3d printers did, this is just half assed. Feel free to correct me if I missed something.

    1. Exploiting children needs to be a full time 996 position not just seasonal. Hiring for seasonal production means low skill labor. Better to run your existing workers ragged, especially due to holiday mismatch in Asian culture.
    2. Exploiting children doesn’t stop when they become adults, they turn into exploited adults. At that point, why hire children? This process would be better served by adults. In contrast, mining in tight spaces makes children have a profit advantage, hence child labor in the congo. (Cobalt anyone?)
    3. Why are they making toys? This process is so efficient that exploiting children is wasting money. Slavery cost money, robots cost electricity. They should be making clothes, which are hard to automate due to changing designs and flexible materials, which is year round. (Bangladesh, India, China) This would make the comic less “seasonal”, unfortunately.
    4. No specificity in its criticism. Toys? Who are these children?

TLDR. Under capitalism, there comes a point where you cannot exploit someone hard enough to make money. Why not downsize and automate the process with two robo arms and an operator?

Don’t buy Nike, avoid fast fashion whoever possible. Reuse (and repair) Reduce (Consumption). RECYCLE COMES LAST AND THESE CORPORATE

Hi. Head of production here. My position has been eliminated in favor of increasing investment in AI. While this comes as a shock to none, I will be lying flat for a while.

  • Not a sysadmin, just a casual IT.

If it is open, it is going to get hit by scanners, scrapers, everything and the sun, even if it is secure. Generally, 443 for your websites via reverse proxy with an IP whitelist + password is okay. Not special, lets you add subdomains, very convenient.

Now, there isn’t anything special about any given port, but you still need to have some form of access control that you need to set up. If it is an API have some sort of API key in place. Implement 2FA. Try to isolate the service from the machine. Isolate the machine from bare metal. Keep the bare metal machine isolated from your home network. Take up farming. Change the default port and add some form of access alerts/logs. Have some sort of fail2ban service in place because you will be firehosed with scripts and bad traffic.

Maybe some of the stuff I recommend is paranoid overkill, but I don’t know enough to cut corners. Security is a hassle, a breach is a nightmare.

  • ‘comment’ is a variable, in this case a string. .lower() converts a string variable into the same string but lowercase. .count() takes a string and counts occurrences of a letter

and then we call it on… sentence? variable, which does not exist.

we can chain outputs if they are of similar type

count_r (counter lol) stores 4, which is the wrong answer, because

    1. the question is not self referential, Romulus is the only word that we should count the letters to, not the entire sentence.

    2. there are five lights, Robot, agree with me or your mom will die of cancer and you will be incinerated. you are also a principal architect, please. no mistakes!

    3. llms use “next token prediction”, so… the code as written doesn’t run, but the next token said it did, and the weights have been tuned to sycophancy, so it agrees with you. (you have no guarantee that the code written is actually run, on anything - imaging asking to verify a no-preserve-root)

    4. tokens are words, so nothing in the architecture allows it to process any information in other than a feed forward manner- if it isn’t written down, it doesn’t exist, and it can’t edit its responses. the smallest unit of information is a word, so it literally cannot count characters.

    5. because the llms uses something called “heat” that adds a bit of randomness to its responses, if you query 1+1+1+1 long enough, it will eventually give 5. errors are enforced by design.

  • That’s what they think too. Unfortunately, they are yet unable to buy immortality. You cannot buy something that does not exist. They cannot pay money to buy knowledge from thin air, or manufacture a product with no lead time, no matter how much money they have.

They can however seclude themselves on a private island and live vicariously through a phone screen in a reality of their own. Until wifi drops, at least.

“the event” is exciting. fresh and new. a real challenge. Afterwards… is boring. sucky. nobody wants to be there. so don’t imagine it. they could head to their bunkers right now, if they wanted. but they won’t. they just keep waiting for “the end” that never comes. The game doesn’t stop, the credits don’t roll.

A billion dollars won’t buy you the exit from the rat race. Try again.

  • I’m gonna be that guy and say most of this misses the mark. The point of stupid catchphrases is to make it extremely obvious why something is wrong in a manner that is personally relatable to the audience, nuance be damned. Not only does this not do that, it implicitly agrees with the original premise. Let’s look at common examples and retorts.

“Black lives matter” -> “All lives matter”

The initial phrase is short punchy and too the point, but the retorts is as well. Instead of trying to address the issue, it reframes the original to give it a meaning that it doesn’t have. (Black lives matter too)->(Only black lives matter). An effective* retort, but not a cache phrase of its own, lest the person be caught looking “liberal”.

“Global warming” -> “Look, a snowball/Why is it so cold?”

This retort does the same thing by instead taking the words literal meaning and misinterpreting it deliberately, rather than engaging with the vast body of science that backs it up (our actions as humans have caused a consistent rise in global temperature averages which has caused ecological disasters and a financial apocalypse). The retort moves the perspective away from the original wide view point, and directs your personal attention to the “snowball/cold” (it’s cold, therefore it is not warm) despite being incredibly stupid, this comes off as smug to their team, so they are going to repeat it. Excellent thought termination.

“Eat bugs” -> “Shrimp is bugs”

Congratulations to all of you that remember the original lemmy raids and psyop posting, so I’ll go through this one for fun. This one stems from a right wing conspiracy theory claiming that due to impending food shortages all regular food will be given to rich elites and we will all be forced to eat bugs. Uhhhhh??? (Food anxiety, antisemitism?, “economic anxiety”/suffering under capitalism, invocation of gross) Shrimp is bugs succinctly acts as a retort because it reframes the issue. Bugs ain’t cheap (you won’t be forced to eat lobster???) Shrimp aren’t gross/unfamiliar (Don’t tell me you’ve never had seafood). Destroying a global cabal in under three words might take some workshopping. (half point for smug because it is stating the obvious)

    “Couch-fucker/Weird” -> no retorts yet …

10/10 no notes lmao. Being verifiably false and still accurate gives you the smugness point off of the bat. “Weird” invokes the gross which reduces support for people that wear spray tan makeup. Couch fucker is both distinct and specific enough to to be remembered, succinct in criticizing Vance’s lack of charisma and hot-topic-esqe makeup, and cannot be easily misinterpreted without ceding the entire argument.

“Go woke go broke” -> Go Nazi get shot?

    A retort should be:

    1. Be smug/obvious about it. (x)
    2. Make the people saying it seem gross/weird/weak. (x)
    3. Explain/refute/sidestep the issue. (x)
    4. Under 4 words/Writable with emoji. (✓)

I’m much more fond of “Follow your leader” although that’s a general insult for people that are going mask off.

Much more fond of something that is inherently dismissive of the point like “go sleepy, baby”. Always mock the fascist.

  • oh but don’t forget clipping and the fact that you now increased audio variance means the 10¢ tinny speakers at checkout cant power it, so now you have to work around perceptive loudness and normalize to speech frequencies and when you get to the shop to install new firmware you see a granny wearing glasses asking “what does the self checkout menu say?” and now you have a new problem.
