  • The optimal viewing distance of a 65“ TV is somewhere between 1.98m and 2.69m for it to fill out 30-40° of our field of vision, as recommended by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), for an immersive „cinematic“ watching experience.

My TV is about 2.5m away from my couch and I’m quite happy with the size, although, if price didn’t play a role, I‘d have gone with another size up (77“). Although I admit, it’s not the most practical size and it’s not for everyone. It does take up a lot of space.

However with 42“ you’re definitely sacrificing quality. Or at least I would be at the 2.5m distance I sit from my TV. The vast majority of people (me included) could not discern any difference between a FullHD and a UHD image there. Our eyes simply do not have that resolution (measured at up to 94 pixels per degree). Even my 65“ at the aforementioned 2.5m distance has a higher resolution than my eyes.

So >=65“ is the only normal size for a normal home, if one actually wants a home cinema and actually not sacrifice on quality, detail and immersion.

  • Person with partial aphantasia (when I really try, I can get about the graphic fidelity of Star Fox on SNES on a monitor with a broken backlight) here:

I always found those thought-journey thingies somewhat pointless when teachers at school n such tried to do them with us. Of course they weren’t experts, though, so maybe someone who really knows what they’re doing could invoke something but realistically, probably not.

On the other hand, dimming the lights, closing my eyes and the relative quietness of only one person calmly telling a kind of story, made me calm and sleepy regardless, so maybe the imaginary journey isn’t necessary anyways.

LMG claims that an investigation by a third party found the allegations of toxic work conditions and sexual misconduct as „unfounded and unfair“. It’s of course anyone’s guess what the reality looks like.
They definitely have improved their reviews and seem much less error prone these days.

That union thing is bullshit tho. Linus never claimed he would refuse to let his workers unionise (in fact, iirc, he couldn’t even legally do so in Canada), he just (repeatedly) stated, that he’d see it as a failure on his and his company’s side, if his employees felt the need to unionise in the first place. That’s a big difference.

Can’t say anything to that part as I do not remember it. But I personally believe it to be a non-issue until there’s precedent. Politically, Linus generally seems to be fairly sane. He’s openly a huge fan of Lina Khan, for example and has openly critcised the current US-administration a number of times.

They did acknowledge #1 and #2 as mistakes, miscommunication and growing pains and vowed to do better. I think it was a bit overblown and handled in bad faith by GN‘s reporting. Not that that’s an excuse but imo they did their best to rectify that situation. The reporting has been more accurate and bo other scandal of this type has happened, so far. The investigation about the working conditions and sexual harassment concluded those allegations were „unfounded and unfair“, to use LMG’s words. They did not get into details and it is a he-said/she-said situation. It’s anyone’s guess what/whom to believe.
I think, all in all, Linus stepping back from the CEO position (which, to be clear, he did a little while before those problems came to light) improved upon most, if not all of the problems, as far as I can tell. I do still watch LTT on occasion but less so. Primarily though, because both, my interests changed as did their content.

  • Apple is actually a much better choice than Spotify. My numbers are a few years old but iirc, Apple pays artists almost twice as much as Spotify. Only Amazon has a worse artist payout than Spotify. Of course, Tidal and Qobuz are still much better than Apple but they also have the limitations you’ve mentioned. Oh and Apple and the others don’t fill out playlists with AI generated music so they themselves can get the payout for the plays. You know, like Spotify does. Realistically, even YouTube Music is more ethical than Spotify these days and that’s saying something.
