25·3 days agoIt’s not so much MAGATs. How can the news allow people to say stuff like this to the public.
The real issue is our quality expectations to the news distribution
It takes a third brain cell to realise that it’s not worth trying to change their mind

News@lemmy.world•Trump criticizes European allies for not helping fix the damage his war against Iran has caused
7·20 days agoI’d hope NATO actually makes a clear distinction between aggressors and defenders in a war. Trump has already twisted ‘national threat’ to justify whatever he wants, and while his own country seems fine with it, I can’t imagine international allies just going along with that kind of logic

Australia@aussie.zone•Luckily work paid for this tank full...English
20·26 days agoI was originally confused, because you pay in $ but quantity is in Liters! But then noticed the community is Australia.
I can tell you that the price here in northern Europe is 4,15 Australian $ pr liter… That would have been just about $300 for your tankful 🤦
It might be the other way around too though… You might be thinking of buying something, because Facebook or google have convinced you that you need it
That said, I had to create an account in FB due to work and studies. I did some research and decided to run it only on a browser and use a seperate browser only for FB. Along with some strict privacy rules.
My account was flagged within 30 seconds of creation. They asked for a selfie ID that they got and they did a manual assessment but banned the account nonetheless for not following community guidelines
You can’t even read their community guidelines without accepting their cookie policy

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Myths about EVs and Fires - How dangerous in strata are they really?English
20·2 months agoThis is interesting… I live in Denmark and based on 2024 numbers, there were 470.000 ev and hybrid cars in the country then. There were 50 registered fires in 2024 and 46 in 2023
That is a lot more fires in Denmark, even considering the number of cars is higher. There are approximately 3 X more Ev and Hybrid cars in Denmark but adjusting for that compared to Australia, it is still more than double the number of incidents!
Maybe they are better at reporting them?

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Trump receives trophy as he’s named ‘Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal’English
52·2 months agoThis was such a comical read! It’s like reading a joke made into a serious article:
President Donald Trump has added another shiny award to his cabinet of trophies that have just been invented
"I’m thrilled to welcome to the White House the men and women who light our cities, and you know, you do things that people don’t even understand, so much, you do so much. You heat our homes, fuel our factories and turn natural resources into American riches and dreams. Our amazing coal miners.”
“I ended the war on coal,”
It is not the first time Trump has been the “inaugural recipient” of an award presented by those looking to curry his favor.
a bronze statue of a coal miner on the top and was engraved with “Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal.”
Infantino also handed Trump “a beautiful medal for you that you can wear everywhere you want to go,”

3·2 months agoIt’s a sliding slope though. The initial reasoning is fair. But it will eventually spread to other features like (potentially) creating and owning servers or holding administrative and moderation roles
It’s the same with the chat control currently looking over EU. Nobody can say that they are against efforts to stop CSAM. The issue is that the efforts don’t limit themselves to fighting that. Likewise the age verification on Discord does not seem to be targeted or limited to certain content. They are leaving the door open to use it any way they want

Technology@lemmy.world•'What a great way to kill your community': Discord users are furious about its new age verification checks — and are now hunting for alternativesEnglish
772·2 months agoThe real problem is, that the majority of users won’t change, and it’s the users that make Discord. There could be a much better alternative but if users are too lazy to change, it is worth nothing.
This is the case with Facebook messenger too. There are great alternatives, but it’s messenger that has the userbase

At least Trump has learned to have others, who are disposable, say what he wants to say.
