This music is about connectedness, loving kindness and heroic action. It was inspired by the work done by the Black Box Theater using modern dance to help veterans with PTSD. They made a film about it called “We lift each other.” It was premiered in Asheville, NC in mid November 2025. The title of the suite came to me while driving around in the mountains surrounding Asheville. The word Elevations in the title can mean different things to different listeners, mountain peaks, dance movements, or how people lift each other with connectedness, loving kindness and heroic action.

The original version of this music was made to accompany an exhibit at the film's premier. To be clear, this music was not a part of the film, but rather just part of the ambience of the exhibit. Elevation One was originally released a few weeks ago, only here on Bandcamp as A Syntax of Meaning.

The emotional heart of this music finds resonance with the 18th-century aesthetic of Empfindsamkeit, or the "sentimental style" characterized by intimate, personal, and often melancholic expression of fleeting emotional states. It valued the authentic, the sensitive, and the introspective. In this performance, that spirit is channeled through a modern lens of tangled patch cables, fluctuating voltages and software code, that can express the inner world of thought and feeling. This is not music as architecture, but as a current of sentiment, captured as it flows.

The guiding principle here is to eschew the loop and the grid, which often defines electronic music. Instead, the piece unfolds through gesture and improvisation, prioritizing nuance of moment over predictable repetition. The aim is to create a syntax of feeling, where phrases develop, pause, and respond in a way that feels intuitive and human.

This recording captures a live performance pairing of two disparate instruments, an ASM Hydrasynth and a Make Noise Shared System, with plugins from The Crow Hill Company and Spitfire Audio. The customized patches were designed not as a static framework, but as a living instrument, intended for a performance that breathes with the spontaneity of a poetic recitation.

"We Lift Each Other" is a documentary film that premiered in November 2025. It is highly relevant to North Carolina, as it chronicles the work of the Raleigh-based Black Box Dance Theatre. The documentary follows the modern dance company as they travel across North Carolina to build community and foster resilience. The film explores how art, dance, and shared creativity can be a powerful tool for connection and for healing the invisible wounds of military service. "We Lift Each Other" is one part of a five-film docuseries called "I Feel Myself To Be Part of Something," which explores the impact of the arts in different American communities. The film just had its premiere on November 10, 2025, at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts in Asheville, timed to honor Veterans Day.
