After the critically acclaimed release of their debut album Echo Echo (2023), Dutch duo WAAN return with “Talking Trees” — the first glimpse into their sophomore album We Want WAAN, due January 23, 2026 via Sonar Kollektiv.

With “Talking Trees,” WAAN continue to blur the lines between the electronic and the organic, exploring the delicate intersection of trip-hop and jazz. Thick, tape-saturated drums anchor a slow-burning, melancholic ballad, wrapped in warm synth layers, plaintive saxophone lines, and the haunting textures of an EMS Synthi. As the track unfolds, it is gradually overtaken by processed cello and evolving electronics, drawing the listener into an increasingly introspective sonic space.

The track was inspired by the silent communication of white pines — trees that transmit signals through the air and via underground fungal networks. This natural metaphor becomes a powerful symbol for the times we live in: a quiet call for connection, understanding, and hope.

WAAN’s debut sparked international attention, with support from global radio (including Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show), national press acclaim, and two Edison Award nominations. Their translation of their intricate studio sound to the stage led to performances across the Netherlands and Europe, including appearances at Paradiso, Bimhuis, Transition Festival, and more.

Looking to build on that momentum, Bart Wirtz and Emiel van Rijthoven retreated to the remote Dutch island of Texel in the summer of 2024. There, surrounded by nature, they began writing what would become We Want WAAN — a record that leans further into rhythmic experimentation, sonic layering, and collaborative spirit. Once again, they worked closely with longtime producer Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak), who helped shape their evolving sound identity.

“Talking Trees” was recorded at Eminent Studios in Leiden, mixed by de Jong at Kraak & Smaak Studios, and mastered by Max Gilkes. The track features contributions from Marta Arpini (vocals), René van Munster (cello), Matteo Mazzù (bass), and Mark Schilders (drums), alongside Wirtz and van Rijthoven on saxophone, keys, and vocals.

The single sets the tone for an album that is rawer, freer, and brimming with curiosity.
We Want WAAN continues the duo’s journey into a rich, genre-defying sound world.
