Building on Frank Bernstein’s model of communities’ orientation to- wards (Ressourcenorientierung) and creation of immaterial resources (Ressourcenproduktion), the focus of this paper lies on religion in con- text of so-called Greek colonisation. Regarding cult practices as re- sources, the model enables us to distinguish clearly between reproduc- tive practices and the creation of new practices in Greek foundations. Though cult communities existed before the apoikiai, the evidence sug- gests further diversification of cult practices along with the migration movements of the archaic period. An explanation might be that in Greek foundations a different environment and new circumstances necessitate new forms of cult practices.

Bernhard Weisser - Paul Seyfried, Musterlösung zur Einführungsklausur Griechische Münzprägung (2025). Diese 2010 zuerst verwendete Klausur wurde im WS 2024/25 erneut als Probeklausur eingesetzt. Hier sind die Lösungen dazu mit den Objektnummern im ikmk.smb.museum, die eine vertiefte Befassung mit den gezeigten Münzen ermöglichen.

Autorinnen und Autoren Vorwort Zum Problem der Tempelprostitution im Altertum fand im Juli 2007 an der Carl von Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg eine Tagung statt, deren Ergebnis der vorliegende Band ist. Ziel der Tagung war es, das Thema aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive anzugeben. Fachleute aus verschiedenen akademischen Bereichen stellten jeweils Quellenlage, Forschungsstand und neueste Erkenntnisse aus dem Blickwinkel ihrer jeweiligen Fachkultur vor. Im Museum der heutigen Stadt Samos (fr her Vathy) auf der gleichnamigen Insel befindet sich eine griechisch-demotische Inschrift, von der bisher nur die griechischen Teile ediert sind. Im Rahmen der Vorbereitung einer Publikation aller samischen Inschriften in den Inscriptiones Graecae (IG XII 6, 1: Inscriptiones Sami insulae) soll daher an dieser Stelle die komplette Inschrift einschlie lich des demotischen Teils bekanntgemacht werden. Die Bearbeitung des griechischen Teils stammt von Klaus Hallof, der die Inschriften im Sommer 1995 im Museum von Samos revidiert und Abklatsche genommen hat, die des demotischen von Martina Minas.

The paper discusses what happened during the western colonization undertaken by Phocaea as narrated by Herodotus and what sources he used for his account: probably most of all some more or less official legend about the founding of the Phocaean colony Hyele/Elea.

Miletos kenti de geniş bir koloni ağına sahip olarak zaman zaman farklı nedenlerle isopoliteia hükmünün yer aldığı antlaşmalar yapmıştır. Bu antlaşmaların bazen belirli dönemlerde tekrarlandığı görülmektedir. Bazı antlaşmaları Pers yıkımından sonra kaybettikleri nüfusun yeniden sağlamak için, bazı antlaşmaları da politik ve ekonomik nedenlerden dolayı yapmıştır. Greek colonisation in the Archaic period had as its goal the expansion and the exportation of a city state’s social and religious customs into different regions. Although the subject of Greek colonisation is often vague, and based on erroneous, and generous primary sources, which can confound links between the colonies and their apparent mother city, a connection can nevertheless be established between the colonies in the Black Sea and the mother city of Miletus through the religious institutions that were installed upon colonisation. The cult of the god Apollo was prevalent throughout the ancient Greek world during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods. For the Archaic period colonizing Greek city state of Miletus, Apollo was patron deity, the god of colonisation, as well as the god of seafaring. For the Milesians, Apollo was the deity who sanctioned the right to set up new cults in new locations, as well as authorising the very act of establishing colonies. In the colonie...

The paper is focused on the Pythia, in particular, on the mode of her functioning. Various factors of religious, psychological, and physiological nature prepared the Pythia for her duty. The personality of the Pythia was of crucial importance, and a candidate for the role of the god’s mouthpiece was chosen carefully. She was probably a woman whose propensity for alteration of consciousness was already observed by members of the community during the ecstatic Dionysiac celebrations of the thuiades. The lifestyle of the Pythia rendered her particularly responsive to the complex induction process to which she was exposed during the preliminary ceremonies leading to the prophetic trance. The accumulated interaction of all these factors enabled successful induction of the Pythia into a state of possession by Apollo – prophetic mania. Apollo’s and Dionysus’ joint tenancy in Delphi reflected the profound connection of the divine half-brothers in cult, epitomized in the Pythia’s personality and behaviour.

Und daher wurde Zeus selbst bemüht, diese herausragende Position, die dem Apollonheiligtum in Delphi zugeschrieben wurde, zu legitimieren. Folgen wir den Darle gungen Strabons, so wußte schon Pindar im frühen 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. davon zu berichten, daß Zeus jeweils einen Adler am westlichen und östlichen Ende der Welt habe aufsteigen und aufeinander zufliegen las sen. Unmittelbar über Delphi seien beide zusammengetroffen. Auf diese Weise sei Delphi zum Zentrum der Welt bestimmt worden. Sinnfälliger Ausdruck dieser mythologischen Überlieferung war ein steinerner, mit zwei Adlern verzierter Omphalos, der im Inneren des Apollontempels aufgestellt war. 1 War die exzeptionelle Stellung des delphischen Heiligtums, die mit die ser Erzählung eindrucksvoll zum Ausdruck gebracht wurde, in der Antike auch unbestritten, so war sie aber dennoch nicht einmalig. Boreas is a feature of Apollo's cult in three Milesian colonies on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea: Olbia, Borysthenes and Histria. The author proposes a hypothesis, according to which behind the epiclesis should be seen an aetiological myth, build on the pattern of the conflict between the patron deity of the Ionian colonists in the Black Sea and the hostile forces of the northern wind, Boreas (ion. Bores). Its inclusion as epiclesis of Apollo suggests a cult of a weather god, invoked for favourable weather conditions, both on the sea and on the land. A clue for the existence of such rituals could give us an offering of honey at Olbia in the Archaic period. It seems that there was a connection between extreme weather conditions and epidemic. It is not by chance that we find Apollo Boreas honoured in the sanctuary of Apollo Ietros in Olbia (the so-called Western Temenos). In the Hellenistic period, Apollo Boreas' cult continues to be present there. At Histria it is attested for the first time on a stone inscription. One can notice a certain development of religious thought in a text on a vessel from Olbia, dedicated by an association of worshipers, who call themselves boreikoi thiasitai. In the Hellenistic period Apollo became a complex, almighty god, identified or only associated with Helios, most probably under the influence of Oriental philosophical and religious ideas, which correspond to the tendency towards eclecticism and religious syncretism that marked the Greek world in the Hellenistic period.

This article argues that Miletos first inscribed a list of its eponymous magistrates ca. 412 BC in the intellectual and historical context of revolt from the Athenian empire. A fragment of this original list survives and was published in 1995 by Wolfgang Blümel, but its full significance has yet to be made clear, as the fragment’s creation and object biography have not been discussed in a systematic fashion.

Miletos of the Early Classical period by virtue of its conscious re-presentation of its Archaic past, qualifies for an ideal archaeological test case to validate the actual historicity of an important passus of the ‘Oath of Plataia’ resp. ‘Oath of the Ionians’. It states that the Greeks should not restore the sanctuaries destroyed in a “barbarian impiety” (βαρβάρων ἀσεβείας) by the Persians as a reminder. The oath has been suspected of being a forgery since Theopompos of Chios (second half of the fourth century B.C.), just like the ‘Peace of Kallias’.
According to the evidence from Miletos which will be presented more fully elsewhere, the ‘Oath of the Ionians’ has to be considered historical. However, certain sanctuaries of crucial importance for the re-established city states of Ionia could be immediately reconstructed, like for example the Delphinion with its Molpon-prytaneion. A distinctive feature of the reconstruction of Miletos was the repair and re-presentation of Archaic and likely also Severe Style sculpture, as was demonstrated above. Transforming Miletos into a museum of her glorious past was a necessary step to recover from the catastrophic outcome of the Persian Wars. This ‘conservatism’ which is most evident in the restoration of the Late Archaic oligarchic constitution in 478, helped building up and strengthening Miletos’ new identity within the frame of the Delian-Attic League. While Miletos’ political and commercial power had faded, her mythical mother-city, Athens was going to take over the lead in all of Greece.
Phrynichos likely made the point in his tragedy Μιλήτου ἅλωσις, (The “Conquest of Miletos”) of 493/2 B.C.: πάλαι ποτ’ ἦσαν ἄλκιμοι Μιλήσιοι (“Once upon a time the Milesians were brave”).

This paper discusses the role(s) in which Lucian’s Dialogues of the Gods show the god Hermes and asks to what extent these vivid little portrays may also be perceived as satirical sketches calling the dignity – and relevance – of the traditional Greek gods into question.

Vor fast einem Vierteljahrhundert hat Günther Hölbl seine viel beachtete Geschichte des Ptolemäerreiches vorgelegt, die heute als maßgebliches Einstiegswerk in die Epoche der makedonischen Herrschaft über Ägypten gelten kann. Rund 300 Jahre währte diese Epoche der ptolemäischen, einer griechisch-makedonischen Dynastie, bis im Jahre 30 v. Chr. Octavian, der spätere Kaiser Augustus, das Land am Nil dem entstehenden Römischen Imperium einverleibte. Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten wie die filmisch von Elizabeth Taylor verkörperte Kleopatra VII. mit ihren römischen Lebenspartnern Gaius Julius Caesar und Mark Anton sowie sowohl innovative technische Entwicklungen als auch allgemein eine hohe Bildung, für die die Stadt Alexandria sinnbildlich steht, kennzeichnen die Ptolemäerherrschaft. Ihre Rezeption in der frühen Neuzeit schuf eine der Grundlagen für die Beschäftigung mit den Hinterlassenschaften des alten Ägyptens allgemein, aus der letztlich die Wissenschaft der Ägyptologie hervorgegangen ist. Mit Die Ptolemäer bietet Stefan Pfeiffer nun ein neues, konzis geschriebenes Grundlagenwerk an, das dem inzwischen gewonnenen Forschungsstand Rechnung trägt und die thematischen Schwerpunkte gegenüber Hölbls Überblicksband maßgeblich erweitert. Irritierend ist der Untertitel " Im Reich der Kleopatra " , der suggeriert, eine Einzeluntersuchung zur Herrschaft der Ptolemäer des letzten vorchristlichen Jahrhunderts vor sich zu haben. Faktisch veranschaulicht der Autor ausgehend vom Tode Alexanders des Großen bis zur römischen Herrschaft über Ägypten Politik-und Sozialgeschichte, Aspekte des Alltags-und Wirtschaftslebens sowie die Religionspraktiken der multiethnischen Bevölkerung. Pfeiffers Übersicht folgt der chronologischen Reihung der Könige von Ptolemaios I. bis Ptolemaios XII.; als zehntes Kapitel bildet die bereits mehrfach erwähnte Kleopatra den Abschluss seiner Zusammenstellung (" Der letzte Kampf um das Ptolemäerreich " , S. 231-214), bevor er in einem Epilog die Dynastie noch einmal Revue passieren lässt und in den überregionalen Kontext setzt (S. 215-219). Pfeiffers historische Darstellung wird immer wieder von Einzelthemen erläuternd unterbrochen. Es sind dies vor allem Diskussionen um die königliche Selbstdarstellung und religiöse Anknüpfungspunkte der Makedonen an ägyptische Gebräuche (die ägyptische Göttin Arsinoë, die Nachfolgeproblematik, der Serapiskult, Weissagungstexte, die Juden Ägyptens, lokale Elite u.a.m.). Immer wieder verweist Pfeiffer auf die unterschiedlich ausdeutbare Überlieferungslage und erläutert deutlich nachvollziehbar seine Interpretationsansätze mithilfe zahlreicher übersetzter Überlieferungen. Es gelingt ihm zudem, die einzelnen Regentschaften ohne eine erkennbare Bevorzugung eines bestimmten Ptolemäers im Umfang nahezu ausgeglichen zu präsentieren (nur das achte Kapitel zu Ptolemaios IX., X. und XI., S. 168-182, weicht – bedingt durch das auswertbare Quellenmaterial – hiervon ab). Ein Stemma des Herrschergeschlechts und zwei Karten, ein umfangreicher Anmerkungsapparat sowie ein ausführliches Literaturverzeichnis nebst Personen-, Orts-und Sachregister sind dem Band zusätzlich beigegeben (S. 220-289). Eine aktualisierte Darstellung der Geschichte der ptolemäischen Dynastie in Ägypten drängte sich durch die neueren Forschungen der letzten Jahrzehnte nahezu auf. Mit Stefan Pfeiffer ist es dem Verlag Kohlhammer gelungen, einen der gegenwärtig besten Kenner der Materie für das Vorhaben zu gewinnen. Der erweiterte thematische Rahmen wie auch die Einbeziehung aller relevanten Neuerscheinungen im Forschungsgebiet seit Hölbl, machen diese komprimierte Gesamtschau zu einem idealen Einstiegsband für Studierende und Interessierte aller historischer Fachdisziplinen.

abstract: The article presents three new inscriptions found during archaeological field surveys conducted by prof. Dr. Neşe atik in the ancient city of Tripolis in 2002. located in the yenicekent township in the Buldan District of Denizli province (in the upper Menderes valley south east of lydia, on the border of caria), Tripolis saw its most flourishing period under the Roman Empire. it is not certain whether the site was founded by the seleucids or attalids or as an ionian colony. The first inscription is probably a topos inscription related to the attalos phyle, the second probably belongs to a pedestal and the third is related to a construction project conducted by stephanephoros Dionysodoros, son of Theodoros. • Bei Feldforschungen in der antiken stadt Tripolis unter der leitung von prof. Dr. Neşe atik wurden im Jahre 2002 drei neue inschriften entdeckt. Die antike stadt Tripolis liegt in der Nähe des heutigen städtchens yenicekent (landkreises Buldan/provinz Denizli) im Tal des oberen Maiandros im Grenzgebiet des südöstlichen lydien zu Karien. 1 Da Tripolis bisher unzureichend erforscht ist, besitzen wir über diese stadt nur wenige in for mationen. 2 strittig ist insbesondere, ob die stadt erst von den seleukiden oder attaliden gegründet wurde 3 oder ob es sich bei ihr um eine alte ionische Kolonie handelt. Tripolis erlebte seine Blüte in der römischen Kai serzeit und gehörte damals zum conventus von sardeis. 4

dönemde ise Kap Poseidion olarak bilinen bölgedeki Poseidon altarı oluşturmaktadır.
Bu anıt, A. von Gerkan tarafından 1915 yılında kapsamlı bir şekilde yayınlanmıştır.
Makale kapsamında, söz konusu altarın, deniz kenarındaki konumu, tipolojisi,
tarihlemesi ve adandığı kült değerlendirilmektedir. Buna ilaveten Kap Monodendri
Poseidon altarının inşa edildiği dönemde Miletos’un siyasi ve ekonomik durumu da ele
alınmaktadır.
Yapılan değerlendirmeler şu sonuçları ortaya koymaktadır: 1. Altarın inşa edildiği
burun günümüzde olduğu gibi, antik dönem denizcileri için de bir oryantasyon noktasıydı.
Altar yapısı muhtemelen “Deniz Feneri” işlevine de sahipti. 2. Kap Monodendri’deki
Poseidon altarına tipolojik bakımdan benzer bir örnek bulunmamaktadır. Bu bağlamda
antik dönem altarlarında hiç bir zaman standart bir planlama uygulanmadığı ortaya
çıkmaktadır. 3. Kap Monodendri Poseidon altarı MÖ 6. yüzyılın üçüncü çeyreğinde,
Miletos’un İonia’nın incisi olduğu dönemde, muhtemelen tiran Histiaios tarafından
aynı zamanda bir “propaganda anıtı” olarak Poseidon Enipeus kültü için yaptırılmıştır.

In 1887, the founder of the Romanian school of epigraphy, G. Tocilescu introduced in scientific use a proxeny decree for architect Epicrates, son of Nicoboulos from Byzantium. The slab of marble embedded in the floor tiles of the big church porch of the Dragomirna monastery (in today's north-eastern Romania), could have been brought from Suceava, already during the reign of Alexander the Good. Keeping in mind the same margin of error, we can think of a later date, based on the contacts with Mangup and Genoese Crimea during the rule of Stephen the Great, or the links of the merchants of Suceava with the cities of the Northern Black Sea region, Ochakov included.
Among the many "pierres errantes", the one under discussion is of a special importance, due to the interesting text, and to the long debate epigraphists have had regarding its place of origin. Among them, worth noting is the Romanian scholar D.M. Pippidi that included it in the corpus of inscriptions of Histria (ISM I 65). As the Histrian origin looks questionable I am discussing it again, trying to provide a more credible argument.
Unlike my predecessors, who seem to have revealed only convenient arguments leaving out far more important details, I propose a much more complex approach. Consequently, I brought into the equation all the parameters which I considered more or less relevant in solving this problem: from the inscription structure and language peculiarities, to the mentioned magistracy and the date on which the decree was passed; from the festival of Thargelia and olatikos polemos, to onomastics and Sarmatians ‘tamga’-signs; from aspects related to the international situation in the 3rd century BC to details of the ancient cities location along the northwestern coast of the Black Sea in the modern period. The analysis undertaken allows me affirm with a great degree of probability that Olbia should be considered Epicrates’ city of residence. Thus, based on much wider evidence, I hope that the hypothesis, formulated for the first time one hundred years ago by O. Fiebiger, has been confirmed.

This contribution proposes a conjecture for the last word in line 53 of the Homeric Hymn to Apollo. The two variants of this word, which are the most commonly printed in the editions of this hymn, seem either not to fit well within the context or to be linguistically improbable. The newly proposed conjecture is an attempt to confront these problems: on the one hand the first verb in line 53 can be understood in its primary meaning, and on the other hand it appears that the mythologem of the anchorage of Delos as a reward for letting Leto give birth to her twins is already present in the Hymn to Apollo.
