What is a Bitcoin Wallet?

A Bitcoin wallet is an app, device or other tool that manages the private keys used to access and spend your BTC. The bitcoin itself is not stored inside the wallet. It remains recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain, while the wallet gives you control over the keys needed to move it.

Your wallet also generates Bitcoin wallet addresses. These are the addresses you share when you want to receive BTC. When you send Bitcoin, your wallet uses your private keys to authorize the transaction.

There are two main custody models:

Self-custody wallets let you control your own private keys.
Custodial wallets are managed by an exchange or other provider that controls the keys for you.

How can you create a Bitcoin wallet

Get the app from the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code on this page to send the download straight to your phone.

Open the app and create a new wallet

Choose to create a new wallet. Your keys are generated on your device, so there is no account to sign up for before you can start.

Select Bitcoin

Pick Bitcoin (BTC) as the wallet you want to create. You can add wallets for other supported coins in the same app whenever you need them.

Secure and back up your wallet

Turn on the passcode and biometric protection your device supports, then complete the backup in the app so you can restore access with your custom password if you lose or replace your phone.

Receive or transfer BTC into it

Use the Receive screen to accept BTC from someone else, or transfer coins in from an exchange or another wallet you already use.

What type of BTC wallet should you use?

Keep control of your Bitcoin

Self-custody means there is no bank, exchange or support desk holding the keys for you. That gives you direct control over your BTC, but it also makes good backup and device security essential. Complete the wallet’s supported backup process as soon as you create it, protect your phone with a passcode or biometrics, and keep both the wallet app and operating system up to date.

Your recovery credentials and private keys should stay private. Never share them with customer support, someone offering to “verify” your wallet, or anyone contacting you unexpectedly. Download the Bitcoin.com Wallet only from official sources, and be especially cautious when a message creates urgency or asks you to act quickly.
