Respondents to safety survey detail experiences of violence and harassment

Patty Kinnersly - works with the anti-domestic violence group -- 'Our Watch'. She says not embracing equality in every aspect of our community is allowing for this violence to continue and that this is a national emergency.

00:00 The reaction is not necessarily one of surprise, but it reminds us that we do have a national

00:08 emergency in this country of violence against women.

00:10 It also reminds us that this violence is gendered.

00:14 The data on the people who are most likely to experience this violence, being young women,

00:19 LGBTIQA+ people and women with a disability, reminds us that the rates are real and that

00:26 this matter is a gendered nature.

00:29 And I think as a community we're not comfortable with either of those things, but it's really

00:32 important that we keep working to prevent this violence from occurring into the future.

00:36 The most worrying thing is that as a community we haven't yet embraced the need for change

00:41 across every aspect of our community.

00:43 It's very easy for people to say, "This doesn't happen in my community, it doesn't happen

00:46 in my family, and so I don't really have any contribution to make to preventing it from

00:51 happening into the future."

00:52 What we know is that it's gender inequality in our workplaces, in our supporting organisations,

00:57 in our homes, in our education settings.

01:00 And so each of us can contribute to creating a community where women are safe and equal

01:04 and respected in all of those places we spend our time.

01:08 So the thing that surprises me is that people haven't yet really engaged with their responsibility

01:14 in every part of our community to create one that is safe and respectful and equal for

01:19 women.
