Warmth to build across Midwest, Northeast in wake of Alberta clipper

A round of rain and snow showers will give way to rising temperatures across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic this week, with afternoon highs as much as 25 degrees above historical averages.

00:11 Widespread 40s were clinging to them in cities like Pittsburgh and Columbus, for example.

00:17 All of that kind of nasty weather coming from what I've lovingly been calling an annoying

00:21 storm today.

00:23 It's actually called an Alberta Clipper, a Saskatchewan Screamer, a Manitoba Mauler.

00:27 We have a lot of fun names for things here in the world of meteorology, but the gist

00:31 of this storm is it comes from western Canada, cruises through the northern tier of the United

00:36 States, and sometimes these little clipper systems can pack a punch.

00:41 Sometimes they have some really cold arctic air with them.

00:44 Sometimes they have a solid amount of moisture and you get big snow or a lot of rain.

00:48 This one kind of hasn't either.

00:50 That's why I've been calling it annoying.

00:51 It's just kind of a nuisance today in the Ohio Valley and even as you're getting into

00:55 the northeast.

00:56 It's going to continue its trek eastward and move through western Pennsylvania and

01:00 overnight in and out of the mid-Atlantic coastline.

01:03 Now in terms of snow versus rain, accumulating snow, we're really looking up and down the

01:08 Allegheny Range from really southern Pennsylvania back down to West Virginia.

01:12 The highest elevations of the mountains, we could come up with a couple inches here and

01:15 there.

01:16 Other than that, it's that wet snow that essentially melts on contact with the ground and some

01:20 rain that is going to be a touch heavy at times as you wake up tomorrow morning for

01:25 your commute in cities like Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

01:27 Be careful heading out the door.

01:28 It's going to be slick in spots.

01:30 But that says the last of this system is leaving.

01:33 It's what's behind it that's really the bigger deal, if you don't like the cold anyway.

01:39 Burlington, we're down to 23 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.

01:43 36 in Boston, 38 in Pittsburgh, 39 in Detroit.

01:46 What a huge difference.

01:48 But just wait a day and the weather will change.

01:51 As we move to Thursday and Friday, the chill is out, the warmth is in.

01:55 High pressure is back in charge and it's helping to pump in a flow of air out of the south.

01:59 Why do we care about that?

02:00 Because that warm air from the south, well, it's warmer.

02:03 That's the thing, right?

02:04 Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland, all the way into the northeast, temperatures will start

02:08 to trickle up and we're riding that roller coaster way up the hill as we look towards

02:11 cities like Detroit, for example, through the end of the week.

02:14 Check out Tuesday and Wednesday.

02:16 There's that chill after the clipper's gone.

02:18 And then here comes that warm air, upper 40s by the time we get to Thursday and then the

02:22 mid 50s for Friday and Saturday.

02:24 It's a similar situation as we head into New York.

02:27 You'll notice that dip after the clipper's gone, 40 degrees by Thursday and then we're

02:31 up to 55 by Saturday.

02:33 So hey, enjoy that if you like the warmer weather.

02:36 Now if you don't, just again, wait a couple of days and things are going to change.

02:40 All that warm air, not to spoil your plans or anything, is out ahead of our next major

02:44 storm system.

02:52 the eastern seaboard, we're going to see some heavy rain and following this system heads
