US-based Aussie Sam Appleton broke a longstanding course record to claim victory at Ironman Australia, finishing with an impressive time of 07:57:32.

00:38I knew I had some

00:40pretty good training leading into this

00:42so I knew I could race pretty well

00:44but I didn't really expect to be

00:46known the whole day

00:48up until Mike caught me on the run and then we had

00:50a bit of a battle for the back half of the marathon

00:52which was really exciting but

00:54I would have preferred a bit more space to be honest

00:56but yeah it feels great

00:58to win, I was third last year

01:00so to come back and

01:02improve on that is really good in front of

01:04my mum lives here, my dad drove up

01:06from Sydney, my brother

01:08so in front of friends and family it's really special

01:10I race around the world and so often

01:12you know it's just me

01:14so yeah when you have your family

01:16watching you and supporting you

01:18it means so much

01:20I wanted to swim pretty hard because

01:22I'm going to try and get a gap on Mike

01:24and Ben Hill

01:26because they're such good riders

01:28and I wanted them to work really hard

01:30to try and catch me so

01:32I tried to swim really hard

01:34and get a gap

01:36and hopefully they would work too hard

01:38on the bike to try and catch me but

01:40they rode really well

01:42I think I might have taken a bit of the sting

01:44out of their legs for the run so

01:46I guess my plan worked out pretty well
