Australian’s have paused for a minute of silence to acknowledge, honour and remember those who have died while serving in conflicts and peace-keeping operations.

00:00This was the first National Remembrance Day service to be held at the newly redeveloped
00:06Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
00:09Members of the three armed services making use of the new parade ground at the start
00:12of the service.
00:14Shortly after, the Governor-General, Her Excellency Miss Sam Mostyn, was welcomed to the proceedings,
00:19her first Remembrance Day in the post.
00:21The catafalque party of the Federation Guard completed their ceremonial march to stand
00:25at the four corners of the Zone of Remembrance.
00:28The last post was played, immediately followed by the minute's silence at the stroke of 11
00:32o'clock.
00:33The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, attended the service, as did the Chief of Defence,
00:37Admiral David Johnston, senior members of the Defence Forces, and several hundred veterans,
00:41their families and members of the public.
00:43Giving the commemorative address, the Governor-General paid tribute to Australia's armed forces.
00:48The Governor-General laid a wreath at the Stone of Remembrance, local schoolchildren
00:52laid poppies.
00:53Originally known as Armistice Day, to mark the laying down of arms in 1918, the first
00:58commemoration was in 1919 and was observed across Australia.
01:02400,000 Australians enlisted for service in the First World War, 60,000 gave their lives.
01:07The Australian War Memorial opened on Remembrance Day in 1941, as the Second World War raged.
01:13The Governor-General of the day, Lord Gowery, sang in his remarks that Australia should
01:17never again go to war.
01:19In the months since my swearing in as your Governor-General, and as Commander-in-Chief
01:23of the Australian Defence Force, I have experienced many times of reflection on what service really
01:30means, and the ways in which we commemorate.
01:34I have had the great privilege of encountering the people and places of the ADF across Australia.
01:40At Holeswelly Barracks, RAF Base Tyndall, Fleet Base East, on HMAS Adelaide, with the
01:476th Aviation Regiment, the 2nd Commando Regiment, the cadets at the Royal Military College here
01:52at Duntroon, and the women and men who work alongside me every day.
01:58On land, at sea and in the sky, in theatres of war and in zones for peacekeeping, in protecting
02:05our borders and working in support of the safety and progress of our nation and our
02:09region, the Australian Defence Force is a modern force, upholding the greatest of Australian
02:16values, continuing the legacy of the service of generations past, and demonstrating the
02:22very best of our nation.
02:25Today marks 106 years since the end of the First World War.
