Women at the War Memorial

00:00There's a prevailing narrative of war, which we've held as a country for such a long time.

00:05It is the narrative of the bronze Anzac soldier standing next to a horse with a dusty hat in his

00:12hand. And that story, it's an important story, but it's not the only story. There are so many

00:18other stories. And those galleries provide a space to be able to much more deeply and

00:24richly explore the stories, not just of the many, but specific stories that shine a light

00:32on women's contribution, on contribution in different roles. We live in a society where

00:38when I joined the army, we had about a 17% female participation rate. Now every single role in the

00:46Australian Army is open to women and women participate in those roles. So the stories

00:51of our involvement in war now, in current generations, is a very different narrative

00:58to the story of women's involvement in World War I.
