Latest winter storm to bring rain to most of the Northeast

A storm on Dec. 18 will hit parts of New England with snow, but most of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast will get rain.

00:00Temperatures are rising now, though the rain is finally moving out of the northeast and there is a new storm on the block.

00:06Look for another round of wintry weather Wednesday from Michigan to Maine with rain south of that line.

00:11You know, meanwhile, the stormy pattern continues in the west while Santa Ana winds are adding to the fire danger once again.

00:18We'll have more on that in just a few minutes, but let's go to Boston, Massachusetts right now.

00:25Beautiful scene, a nice winter eve, but you know, Jeff, it's not to stick around.

00:33It's very, very dramatic there. I can't I can't I can't match that with what I'm going to roll out here.

00:39We have some showers rolling through parts. I don't know.

00:43We have some rain showers east of Lake Ontario into the Toehill Plateau with a lot of snow.

00:48We have some rain showers. It's very mild here.

00:51So we're really going to pick up this next system coming out of northern Arkansas into the Missouri Boothill.

00:57There's not a whole lot out there yet. Just a few thunderstorms near Paragould and areas north of Jonesboro.

01:03Let's take a look at these temperatures, though, that this system will encounter.

01:06Not much mild or not much cold air. We have very mild air in place in advance of this system.

01:12We're at sixty three degrees there in Virginia Beach and thirty nine on the other end of the spectrum up into Detroit.

01:18And Detroit's going to see a little snow out of this one.

01:20But most of us in the northeast will face some rain.

01:23You need to be well north of Interstate 80 with some snow in the forecast for you in the colder spots.

01:28If we extrapolate the forward movement of the storm here through Wednesday night,

01:32then we include Maine with snow, a little bit of a mix down to the south.

01:36Portland, a rain snow mix. Southern parts of New England will see rain,

01:39but there will be a little snow up into the Berkshires.

01:42And here it comes rolling this in from the Ohio Valley.

01:459 a.m. Wednesday will press pause. Widespread rain across western Tennessee, Kentucky, moving into West Virginia,

01:51southern Ohio areas around Portsmouth into Pittsburgh, seeing some of that rain as this expands to the northeast.

01:57Still some rain for most of the Catskills.

02:00If you're up into the higher ground, a little farther north, you're going to find some snow.

02:04But you need both latitude and elevation on your side.

02:07In other words, you need to be both to the north and in higher ground to see much snow out of this one.

02:12If you're farther south, even into western Maryland is mainly a rain event ending with just a taste of snow into the mountains there.

02:18Boston, this is a rain event for you.

02:20Portland, more rain than snow there for the city at least.

02:23Overall snowfall forecast, we're looking at 1 to 3 inches of snow in most areas.

02:27Binghamton, Syracuse, Warren and Bradford, Pennsylvania, seeing a 1 to 3 inch snowfall.

02:323 to 6 up into the Catskills and the Adirondacks, or at least the Adirondacks 3 to 6.

02:36The Catskills more of a 1 to 3 inch snow forecast.

02:39The Berkshires should sneak into 3 plus and up into the Green and White Mountains as well.

02:43Burlington, 1 to 3 inches there.

02:45If you're in the high ground to the east of the city, though, you will have a better shot of 3 or more inches of snow.

02:50We're going to be cooler and drier, a little chillier on Thursday, and then colder Friday night.

02:56Look at this coastal storm.

02:58If this gets energized by a clipper strong enough, it could actually produce some snow right along the coastline into Saturday morning.

03:07We'll keep an eye on that.

03:08But regardless, it's going to get much colder on Friday.

03:10The 30s return.

03:11Burlington back to the 20s.

03:12It'll be a big change for us here.

03:14And there's the potential for some snow along the coastline.

03:16Again, low confidence in this, but if it strings a little stronger closer to the coast, then we will see some snow.
