Police officer and man shot in altercation in city’s south

A man who was shot by police after he lunged at officers during an altercation in Brisbane had recently escaped from a Queensland hospital. A senior constable also suffered a gunshot wound during the incident.

00:00Police swarmed this usually quiet street after a routine job turned life-threatening.

00:09The situation itself was very dynamic, very traumatic for all involved including the witnesses.

00:15Two officers were called to a home on Tamar Street in Annerley about 9 o'clock this morning

00:21after the owners reported a stranger in their backyard.

00:24Police approached the 26-year-old man in an agitated state who was armed with a piece of timber.

00:30They got into a struggle. The man then lunged for the senior officer's gun.

00:35The firearm discharged and the senior constable received a gunshot wound to the left inner thigh.

00:43The first year constable then shot the man twice in the stomach.

00:47I heard a very loud voice which I assume was a police officer saying,

00:53don't move, stay on the ground and then a couple of shots rang out.

00:58He then provided first aid to the senior constable.

01:02Despite being shot twice, officers tasered the man before taking him into custody.

01:07I know the officer who was shot today, who I had the opportunity to go and speak to today,

01:12feared for his life and he thought he was going to die.

01:15Queensland Health said a patient was brought into the Princess Alexandra Hospital the night before

01:21and received treatment in the emergency department.

01:24But when the patient absconded this morning, staff immediately contacted police.

01:30The man is in a serious condition after undergoing surgery.

01:34The 40-year-old officer is in a stable condition.

01:37Residents are shocked by what occurred.

01:40It's a really quiet, beautiful, community-minded area and yeah, it's a surprise.

01:46To think that a call-out can end in something like that sends shivers up your spine.

01:54It's being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.
