North Queensland still being battered by rainfall, delaying recovery

More torrential rain has struck North Queensland, further delaying the region's recovery.  The current threat of flooding has subsided but weary residents are being told to stay alert.

00:00A key North Queensland bridge now a mangled mess.

00:06After another day's long deluge, Magnetic Island's infrastructure is crumbling.

00:11The island copped over 172 mils last night and that is causing all kinds of headaches

00:16for us.

00:17The bridge was shattered in last month's flooding emergency.

00:21Unable to withstand yet another downpour, it's been reduced to rubble.

00:26We do understand that there is frustration over there, but after speaking with the council

00:30just now we know that it is a priority for them.

00:32The North Queensland region copped a powerful overnight drenching on top of already record

00:38breaking rain yesterday.

00:40Cardwell Gap has recorded 453mm, which is a new March daily rainfall record for that

00:46location.

00:47The Sugar Cane Shire is sodden again.

00:50Ingham residents woke to a sheet of water.

00:53It just feels like it's all happening again, eh?

00:55Café owner Dominic Zaghini was hit hard in last month's flooding emergency.

01:01We lost over $50,000 worth of stock at the front.

01:05With access to the lower Herbert cut, he'll have to spend the night on his café kitchen

01:10floor.

01:11I snuck in this morning, I went home and had a rest in my own bed last night and the rain

01:18just didn't stop.

01:19He's not the only frustrated commuter left stranded.

01:22The Bruce Highway is cut yet again.

01:25I went in town in the first place to work and now I'll be stuck here.

01:28It's definitely surrounded by this and I'm not sure if it's even safe to stay in the

01:32van and stuff because of all the wetlands so I'll probably have to fork out some money

01:35on a hotel.

01:36The Weather Bureau has cancelled the severe weather warning for North Queensland's tropical

01:41coast.

01:42The local councils want residents to stay alert.

01:46Sand is still available for people who worry about the rain that's to come in the days

01:53ahead.
