Extreme weather warnings in place for Tasmania

100km/hr wind gusts for much of Tasmania.

00:00Hello it's Angus here at the Bureau and it's going to be a very windy week across Tasmania.

00:04Cold fronts will be delivering damaging wind gusts to our southern state as early as today.

00:10That's right the winds are picking up on Monday, could stay strong into Tuesday potentially even into Wednesday as well.

00:16Let's jump in and take a look, see what is going on.

00:19So on this map we've put the wind at 1.5 kilometres above sea level

00:24and the reason we look at winds at that altitude is it lets us see the overall flow of the atmosphere

00:28without having to worry about things like mountains and valleys.

00:32At the time of recording which is late Monday morning it's already getting quite windy across Tasmania

00:37but the key thing we're really looking for on this map is when those colours turn dark red and purple

00:43showing us not just the strong winds at this altitude but we know those strong winds will be reflected

00:48by damaging wind gusts down at the surface.

00:51Let's play through the remainder of Monday and watch as this front out to the west gets closer and closer

00:56and see how the wind over the state responds to that, it just gets stronger and stronger.

01:00This comes to a pause at 2am tomorrow morning so overnight tonight

01:04and that is really when the winds are expected to be the strongest

01:07is through the early hours of tonight into Tuesday morning

01:11and basically the entire state covered by those very strong winds.

01:14We also see a few stronger winds around southern Victoria

01:17although at this stage it looks like those winds in Victoria will stay below the threshold required for a warning.

01:23Let's continue to play through Tuesday, we'll actually see the wind ease off a little bit during the morning

01:28and afternoon but in the evening yet another front approaches from the west

01:32and those winds they get reinvigorated once again

01:35so it will be another very windy night from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning

01:39we continue to play through the loop now

01:41and we'll see a gradual easing on Wednesday into Thursday

01:44as the reds turn to oranges to yellows to greens

01:47telling us that those wind speeds are gradually easing across the state

01:51particularly on Thursday.

01:54So Monday to Wednesday is the key time period

01:55we have got a warning in place which covers much of the state

01:58let's zoom in for a little bit more detail

02:00and basically all of the central elevation

02:03the central plateau, the west coast

02:04that is all included in the warning area

02:06as is Hobart, the capital is included in the warning

02:10parts of the northeast and northeastern mountains as well.

02:12If you live in the yellow area here anticipate those winds to really pick up later on today

02:17this afternoon and this evening

02:19and wind gusts could approach 100km an hour

02:22probably more than that if you live at elevation

02:24the strongest winds are expected tonight and overnight

02:27tapering off a little bit through the early hours tomorrow

02:30Tuesday morning not quite as windy

02:32still a pretty windy day

02:34and then we could see those winds pick up once again

02:36on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning

02:38so it's a couple of very windy days

02:40if we do see winds of this speed 100km an hour or so

02:43that can bring down trees and branches

02:45they can fall over roads potentially closing those roads

02:48and they may damage cars and property

02:50winds of this strength can also lead to power outages

02:54the warnings in place are covering the winds

02:56but there will be some rain at the same time

02:59bands of rain really anticipated to cross Tasmania

03:02over the next few days

03:02perhaps around three different pulses of wet weather

03:05between Monday and Wednesday

03:07most of the falls will be in the mountains and on the west coast

03:10but we'll see a few showers spilling across to the north and east

03:13from time to time as well

03:15the key thing with this rain to note is that it could come

03:17embedded with some thunderstorm activity

03:20particularly on Monday afternoon and Monday evening

03:23into the night as well

03:25we may see some severe thunderstorms through central and western parts of Tasmania

03:29if we do see severe thunderstorms once again

03:31it will be because they are generating damaging wind gusts

03:35through these yellow areas
