At a press briefing, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) was asked if he'd support his Lt. Governor, Jay Collins, running for Governor.
Transcript
00:00You've been doing a piece of your praise for Lieutenant Governor Collins in the last couple days.
00:04Based on his character, talent, background, would you be supportive of him if you're one for governor next year?
00:11Well, Jay, I think, has been clear, like, you know, this is about doing a mission.
00:16Politics will take care of itself.
00:18I mean, we have a whole year before we even have a primary, and so that's a lifetime in politics.
00:22What I said yesterday was there were two things that mattered to me about being appointed Lieutenant Governor.
00:30One, you had to have demonstrated support for conservative principles and policies and delivered results on those.
00:38Jay obviously has done that.
00:39And two, you have to be a leader.
00:41You've got to be someone that wants to run towards the fire, not sit on the fence, not duck and run.
00:47And obviously he's done that in his life, but when we needed him fighting illegal immigration,
00:52when we needed him to stand up to the CCP, he was there.
00:56And so I have confidence that he could do the job as governor and do it well.
01:01And that was primarily it in terms of kind of how you look at that.
01:06Now, when you talk about someone running, there's people that could be a good governor who may not be able to be a good candidate.
01:13There are some candidates who could be good who would be lousy governors.
01:16It doesn't necessarily go one or the other, right?
01:19I mean, but I will tell you, having been at that event, if you watch that video, you watch the people come up and talk about Jay,
01:27a lot of people that didn't know much about him were really blown away by his story.
01:31So, you know, we're happy to have him as part of the administration.
01:35I know he's, you know, focused on that.
01:37But I think there's a lot of people that are like, man, this is the type of guy that we need.
01:42And if you think about it, we've had appointments this year.
01:46So look at the appointments we've made.
01:48Attorney General.
01:50We probably have the most active attorney general in the country over the last four or five months, James Uthmeyer.
01:58You look at chief financial officer.
02:00This is like less than a month old.
02:02This guy's a bulldog showing up to doge the local governments, fighting for taxpayers, fighting for property tax relief.
02:12I don't think anyone's seen anything like it, blazing Golia.
02:15And so that's just been fantastic.
02:17And now with Jay Collins as lieutenant governor, you know, we've got a really, really strong team in the state capitol in Tallahassee.
02:26And I put it up against anybody throughout the country.
02:30But I think people that watch that, you know, we put out a video to just kind of introduce him to people.
02:36People are like, man, that's our guy.
02:38So he definitely has the ingredients of what it would take to be a compelling candidate that can grab attention.
02:44But I know that, you know, he's really interested in moving the ball forward on all these policies.
02:50Obviously, law enforcement.
02:51We're going to have a big announcement tomorrow on things that will probably be of many interest to a lot of people here in Florida and really beyond that.
02:59And we've got so many other irons in the fire.
03:01So stay tuned on all of that.
03:03It's going to be very exciting.
