01:02Joining us once more, as always, the champ, Sugar Ray Leonard.

01:05Let's talk about the fight that we're going to be seeing in a little while, Larry Holmes and
01:09Michael Spinks.
01:09You visited with Larry Holmes, and he said, essentially, I'm going right after him.
01:13No nonsense.
01:14All business.
01:15Right.
01:16What I saw in Larry Holmes was a relaxed Larry Holmes, a conditioned, excellent conditioned
01:20Larry Holmes, a confident Larry Holmes.
01:22He told me he's going straight for Michael Spinks.
01:25Like history states, light heavyweights cannot hurt heavyweights.
01:28So we're going to find out a lot of answers right in the very first round.
01:31Let's talk about Michael Spinks, the light heavyweight champion.
01:34He came in at 200 pounds.
01:36But the way he did it, I know, you don't necessarily agree with.
01:39Well, I'm not an advocate of lifting weights.
01:41I never did in my career.
01:42And the fact that the way he lifted the method that he lifted, he lifted weights, he's tall.
01:46He's not fat.
01:47There's no excessive weight around his men's section.
01:50He looks conditioned.
01:51We might see it different in a bigger Michael Spinks, but it might be a slower Michael Spinks.
01:55So we're going to get some answers early on.
01:57Larry Merchant always has a unique perspective of things.
01:59And tonight, he has a unique perspective from a unique perspective.

02:33If the bigger man beats the smaller man, then Larry Holmes will be one fight away from 50-0.
02:38If the younger man beats the older man, then Michael Spinks will have done something that no light heavyweight champion has ever done,
02:46defeated a heavyweight champion.
02:48The odds are very long on that, but no longer than they were when Leon Spinks, Michael's brother, upset Muhammad Ali.
02:55This being Las Vegas, we have a star-studded opening act to warm up the audience and to warm up you.
03:04That act features Julio Chavez, considered to be one of the best young fighters in the world, defending his 130-pound title.
03:13And no, no 130-pound champion has ever beaten a heavyweight champion either.
03:18It seems the WBC super featherweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez, was born to fight.
03:24The son of a railroad worker is unbeaten in 45 fights with 41 knockouts.
03:29Experts feel he has the potential to become the next Latin superstar,
03:33combining the determination of a young Roberto Duran with the cool confidence of a Carlos Monzon.
03:38Tonight, Mexico's newest knockout sensation hopes to show the world that Julio Cesar Chavez is a young champion with a tremendous future.
03:49When I was a young boy, I used to watch and admire the great Larry Holmes.
03:54And now, I can hardly believe I'm fighting on his undercard.
03:58It makes me very proud.
04:00This super featherweight champion has a lot to be proud of.
04:04After winning the Bacon WBC title in 1984 with an eighth-round knockout over Mario Martinez,
04:09Chavez has gone on to win three straight fights, all by knockout.
04:13He began 1985 with a New Year's Day celebration by knocking out Manny Hernandez in just three short rounds.
04:19Three months later, Ruben Castillo, the number one-ranked contender at the time, challenged Chavez.
04:24This was Castillo's fourth and probably last shot at the crown.
04:27The champion eliminated his high-ranking opponent, and Castillo was counted out at two minutes, 56 seconds for the sixth round in a fight scheduled for 12.
04:37The July fight against Roger Mayweather was also scheduled for 12 rounds, but Chavez wasn't that patient.
04:43In his first nationally televised fight in the United States, the Mexican champion showed American audiences the punching power that has made Julio Cesar Chavez unbeatable.
04:52After four knockdowns in the second round alone, Roger Mayweather was counted out.
04:57Chavez had successfully defended his crown for the second time.
05:02I think that any boxer prefers himself extremely well, especially when he knows he will face a champion.
05:10I also always prefer myself very well, and I don't know my opponent, but I do know I will be ready to defend my title.
05:18So, look at Julio Cesar Chavez. Here's the way these two match up.
05:22Chavez, the older of the two by a couple of years.
05:24Otherwise, really not much to choose. Reach advantage for Dwight Pratchett, but I'll tell you, he is in there against the buzzsaw tonight.
05:31I think you're really going to like Julio Cesar Chavez, and he's going to get tested somewhat by Pratchett, too.
05:35Let's take a look at how Julio Cesar Chavez fights his fights.
05:40He's a banger. There's no question about that.
05:42And I think the fact that he does not score a high percentage of punches, as opposed to the amount of punches he throws,
05:47punches landed, that is, the amount of punches he throws, I think is indicative of the fact that he is a guy who's just going to go right after you.
05:53There's no question about that.
05:55So that is a look at how Julio Cesar Chavez fights.
05:57And here, on the other hand, is a look at how Dwight Pratchett fought in a close loss to Juan Laporte.
06:02He landed just about 30-some percent of his punches.
06:05So they are comparable in terms of what percentage of punches they land,
06:08but in terms of how effective those punches are, well, Chavez is strictly the better of the two.
06:13Here's the way the WBC rules are.
06:14Ten-point loss system. Three judges score the fight.
06:16There will be no standing eight count.

09:08as a guy to take a punch and give a punch.

09:15this is my first look at him in person.
09:19Very impressive young man.
09:21If he stays on the track,
09:23somewhere down the road,
09:24he could have a fight with Hector Camacho
09:26that would be as big as Ray's fight with Tommy Hearns.
09:29The title that he holds is the title, in fact,
09:32that Hector Camacho vacated.

09:36I'm really surprised by Chavez.
09:39Normally, he's a very aggressive fighter.
09:41I think what he's doing now
09:42is pretty much trying to punch it out.
09:45Trying to see what type of punch he possesses.

10:30I mean, when he executes a punch,
10:32it's with authority,
10:33it's with power,
10:35and it's accurate.
10:36And he's on balance also.
10:41The more I see Chavez,
10:42the more I'm impressed
10:43because he improves every fight.
10:46Very dedicated fighter.
10:48Very loose.
10:49Anxiously learning how to speak English now
10:51because he figures wisely
10:52that it will help him in his career.
10:53Good-looking kid.
10:58Well, Pratchett's trying to get his punches in
11:00and throw it through his round.
11:03He ran to the right hand.
11:05Didn't seem to do too much damage.
11:18In fact, Pratchett appears to be
11:20so much smaller than Chavez.

11:26mainly because he drops his hand

11:31like they have so much authority.

11:53And we, incidentally, will have an interpreter

12:34so he's got to be very careful and watch him very closely and be a little bit more

13:08even for a feeling out round chavez did look to be going at a rather lethargic rate
13:15so we'll see if he doesn't pick up the tempo here in the second round chavez the red trunks
13:19pratchett in the white trunks pressing chavez a little bit here chavez has been elusive he has
13:27not been hit by any big bomb thrown by pratchett he moves his head very well
13:31but it's time now to throw his own bombs pratchett's staying right on top of chavez
13:40agree with that strategy right well i think um for pratchett his best bet because not really
13:46his best bet is it uses boxing skills and you saw chavez indicate to davy pearl that he was being but
13:52you see inside when pratchett goes inside he's not that effective he's better on the outside get your
14:02hands off
14:16chavez just seemingly in control hasn't really fired the big bombs yet chavez is going to do something
14:22the way i see uh pratchett he throws punches and he drops that's it he stoops and he's doing it
14:28repeatedly so what chavez may do he might make some punches under he has a timer the right hand there land
14:37chavez's hero ruben olivares youngest mexican champion ever and of course salvador
14:43sanchez who he says he's never met but he has seen on television very likely right here on hbo prior to
14:49his tragic death chavez doesn't specialize in the left jab he take your hands on my next to the right
14:56hands and left hooks
15:00his left jab is pretty much something to measure for the right hand good combination
15:05my gosh that did get in look at the way he digs to the body out now
15:11punch out your hands are free
15:14watch your head now watch your head
15:15chavez posing a bit of a problem here for chavez right now he's staying on top of him and he seems to have
15:22the champion not so much in trouble but just a little bit confused
15:25well normally chavez relentless right he stays on top of his opponent just the way he did with
15:30roger mayweather and low snack here hand off he uh is content to just peel his man out for another round
15:40the man has been hurt pratchett has been the aggressor in the fight and chavez has kind of
15:44sat back and just watched the goings on keep him up now
15:54chavez has 45 fights under his belt
15:56won them all 41 of them by knockout so he's dangerous there's no question about that get up
16:04and down to the end of the second round now
16:13well i think a case can be made that pratchett has won the first two rounds of the fight at least on my
16:17part and he's posing some opposition and uh i think that's good for javez and it's good for us
16:38not much going on there i guess they're happy with what they're seeing
16:41so he has a long reach advantage pratchett isn't using it he's just going right at chavez
16:54i know the first rounds are very difficult but you have to take it easy
16:58to keep on uh hitting low on the low side of his body
17:03so we start the third round and in chavez's corner they're telling him to stay downstairs that'll
17:13bring the man's arm down and then he can go ahead hunt take your hands off the neck
17:21meantime pratchett showing himself very well well he doesn't have to look for uh pratchett because he's
17:27been there for the past two rounds he uh has chosen to stand toe-to-toe with a devastating puncher
17:34as chavez as we mentioned earlier the most impressive patch it has been was in a 10 round
17:40loss to juan laporte but the indicative number there is 10 rounds he did go the distance now chavez
17:47is starting to dip that left hook to the body it's a thing of beauty barry because you can see the results
17:54you can see uh something taking place in a fighter those hands start to drop his movement slows down
17:59a great deal there's blood showing actually on the ribs of julio cesar chavez but i can't really
18:07tell where the blood is coming from it's coming off the gloves apparently but i don't see either
18:12fighter marked on the face hands off his back
18:17chavez is finding really quite difficult to get some clean punches in
18:28good body shot but it's difficult to uh man a good punch on pratchett for the time being because
18:34his hand he keeps his hand very hot this is a good habit
18:40once again there's signs of blood but i can't really tell where that blood is coming from i'll
18:45try to see if they're working on either of these fighters in the corner between rounds
18:51this is going to be a fight of strength and power and i'm sure chavez should win on power
18:59he's proven in 41 knockouts so far though pratchett's getting his punches off quicker
19:03than chavez oh there's no question about it though he has the quicker hands but the power has to go to
19:11chavez but chavez can't get his punches off too cleanly because pratchett stays very close
19:22neither man has been hurt this is the third round you have to wonder how much of this can
19:26pratchett too because any big puncher there's an accumulation it takes his toe
19:32keep your hands off his neck keep your hands off his neck now
19:36pratchett being told by davy pro to keep your hands off his neck and pratchett is holding a little
19:40bit with the left hand well he's making chavez fight
19:48chavez is finally difficult to get some punching room
19:52oh and pratchett actually dropped his hands and walked away there is seem to be blood coming from the
19:58mouth of pratchett it's a hand up it could be his lip or his jaw or his jaw exactly
20:09he just dropped his hands and walked away and he couldn't help but think he was hurt
20:18he has a bloody mouth pratchett
20:20this is his mouthpiece
20:22they can't find his mouthpiece
20:24i gave it to do what happened to his mouthpiece you didn't give me this mouthpiece
20:28no you didn't the mystery of the disappearing mouthpiece
20:32did he go out without a mouthpiece ray i'm sure he did
20:37they're hollering for a mouthpiece somebody go downtown and buy a mouth
20:41who have normally have two mouthpiece in the corner but this doesn't happen often spit it out
20:54and there is the new bigger michael sphinx warming up
21:02uh superman super sphinx keith and i believe while we were watching michael sphinx that his corner
21:08did indeed slip a mouthpiece at the patch his mouth but i'm not a hundred percent sure i'm not
21:14either larry and he's still bleeding from the mouth too no they gave him a mouthpiece
21:19this is a good thing because those punches are going to the chin that was a big left hand by
21:24chavez and i believe patchett is hurt pull it up he took a better touch without the mountain
21:28holding it for cut it out
21:35chavez now is just start trying to measure patchett
21:40it's all power now you will see a different chavez a more aggressive chavez and a much more
21:46effective chavez i think he has he has this man figured out there
21:52drill no shot to the body hard shots to the body
21:55up up to the up to the head down to the bottom
22:01good right hand there too and another right hand and you're right he's really starting to measure
22:07his man now oh he hasn't figured out now that coming right over the left hand of dwight pratchett
22:13what he's doing now actually he's just trying to take his man apart piece by piece
22:20he's putting his punches together it's not one punch anymore it's two punches and three
22:25punch out
22:32oh the celebrity
22:38chavez keeps that left foot out i like that because he's getting he maintains his balance
22:42that way plus he gets he's able to get the leverage behind each punch
22:47birth a lot of fighters make mistake of putting both feet together
22:50every one of chavez's punches has that sound of authority to it
22:57well he's getting the snap behind each punch which means he's delivering each punch properly
23:01that's a pretty good chin he's been hit by some good shots thrown by uh chavez
23:12but it's a matter of how much of this can he take
23:15that's its record a little bit to cv because as we mentioned he's had impressive performances
23:19against both juan laporte and against jimmy paul except detroit fighter
23:23went the distance against both those men so he's tough kid
23:36i think chavez has taken pratchett's best
23:38the president has done a very good job of smothering the punches of chavez
23:53not giving him punch and roll only a few times chavez was able to land with this
23:57i can tell him blows
24:17the best mexican fighters often are devastating body punchers and chavez looks like he is in that
24:24tradition

24:37gasoline how do you feel okay you have to walk him out he is cut and you are okay you got to go
24:45faster when you have another the long shot hit him with the left use your left hand
24:54more often and take it easy because you are better than him
25:10impressive numbers but that's just a statistical survey it doesn't really tell you the impact of
25:18the punches that are being thrown or landed this is the fifth round you see a different chavez
25:25he's going to pick up the rhythm pick the pace up starting to feel things now
25:31that's going to take a point away from right cratchett for holding he's been hooking him behind the neck with the left hand he's been doing it rather consistently
25:46what i was going to say about chavez is that he does always seem to be on balance he doesn't waste too many punches he's a very intelligent fighter and he does pretty much what his corner tells him to do
25:52oh beautiful left hook by chavez and he put a lot of power it was a good snap it it uh rocks
26:05catch it for a second there in his corner between rounds they said throw the left and here we are into the fifth round just about halfway through that's exactly what he's been doing you can see the damage of that left hook thrown by uh chavez by the desperation of a
26:21of a patching whether he forgets about the basic fundamentals of boxing all of a sudden turns into a street fight that's an indication that a fight is hurt or one of the indications
26:41he's actually falling until the punch is thrown by chavez
26:55good white hand very good right hand beautiful right hand got cratchett's attention
27:11chavez with power in both hands he's a mechanic he's a technician but i like the way he delivers those
27:17punches to the bottom very poised fighter
27:23and never change expression no he's baby face to begin with sort of in passive expression another good
27:30right hand a good color right hand left hook rock does touch just a second there his knees buckle
27:35and for a second he saw to reach time time time time i'm taking a point away
27:45baby pearl taking a point away from dwight pratchett he warned him on about three different occasions well
27:50that's the way pressure has to fight chavez is tie him up and hold him if you take it away from him i think
27:57he'd be in a little trouble

28:28funny chavez the way you should fight him you should go at a guy who likes to come forward and try to

28:59and the left hand over the top 45 and 0 chavez mexican fighters don't have long
29:05amateur careers the way many americans do they fight a lot of four-rounders on their way up
29:21sixth round of this super featherweight championship fight
29:31fight like this of course featuring larry holmes and michael spitz always attracting
29:36folks from just about every walk of life celebrities from every walk of life there are
29:41a number of entertainment people boxing people see muhammad ali here mr t sitting next to him

29:53hector camacho is on hand here a number of celebrities from show business
29:59the punch of the nail has stopped me to really win out
30:02now pratchett he's been standing toe to toe with a good punch out now your hands are like chavez
30:09and he's held his own pretty much he's he's attached chavez up stay close not allowing chavez to get in
30:16some clean punches but the punches that has landed were sharp punching and a couple punches at times hurt him
30:23the biggest punch that chavez has been able to land has been that beautiful belt took of his
30:35chavez just seems to be wearing pratchett down not not really in any kind of a hurry
30:39trying to make all his punches count not wasting a lot of punches
30:46davy pearl you can hear on numerous occasions saying watch your heads he doesn't want
30:51this fight marred by a headbutt
31:05there was a good right hand by chavez set it up for the left to the body and he came over the top of the
31:10right
31:14your hands on the president has been trying to gain some type of respect for chavez
31:20and i think he has to a degree and he stayed around a lot longer than many people thought he
31:24would well he's been hit by some shots a couple good punches and uh he still he remains standing
31:30he's right no elbows
31:48you're wondering about stamina julio cesar chavez has gone 10 rounds he has never however gone beyond 10
31:56rounds and there is a possibility thereof that he may be doing that he's really only gone 10 rounds
32:02on two other occasions however not since 1983 and before that not since april of 1982
32:08two good left hands
32:25and here is larry holmes once again a great champion is he still a great fighter

33:31as he was against juan laporte he's not a serious threat to win the fight barring the unforeseen but
33:38he's the kind of guy who could be around when it's over and now cut has opened up
33:43but you know i would disagree i think he is a threat because he can take a punch
33:48and he has a lot a lot of determination and he's a young kid it depends on how much of this he can
33:54take your hands off
34:01but he actually looks like he's wearing down it really looks that way but he's not giving up
34:06as i mentioned chavez doesn't waste too many punches and the punches that he does throw
34:11a very very tough punches hard punches he's heavy-handed as they say about fighters
34:21patch is bleeding from the nose now also keep him up
34:24again you can just see how hard the punches the chavez throws are the left eye of french is done as well
34:44and it's due to that right hand
34:54i'm sure tomorrow morning is when dwight patch is going to feel this fight the most
35:02it's gone to weekend now
35:07get in there against guys who can hit as hard as chavez i remember you telling me the story of marco
35:11serraldo who it makes you want to give up because the guys that possess good power in both hands
35:19prove to be uh a tough score for you marco serraldo is not a name that you're going to remember from
35:24boxing but sugar ray leonard will remember it he's a big guy in fact i was a little guy moving up to
35:30his weight the same thing we have here the light heavyweight too light heavyweight fighting heavyweight
35:41okay meanwhile pratchett just kind of leaning a little bit more on chavez now but of course
35:45he's very conscious of not holding him he's had a point taken away by referee davy pearl already for
