08:34Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.

11:21with 13 wins by way of knockout.
11:24He is ranked the number six lightweight contender in the world,
11:28welcomed the current NABF lightweight champion,
11:32known as the Matador,
11:35Frankie Mitchell.
11:36And his opponent across the ring.
11:43On my left, fighting out of the red corners,
11:45the defending WBC Super Lightweight Champion.
11:49He enters the ring,
11:51wearing white trunks with dark blue trim,
11:53fighting out of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
11:58His weight is at an even 140 pounds,
12:02and his tremendous record represents the longest undefeated streak in boxing today,
12:08with 80 wins.
12:09No defeats, 66 wins by way of knockout.
12:14Welcome, the three-time world champion,
12:17one of boxing's pound-for-pound greatest,
12:19is the Grand Campeon Mexicano,
12:23Julio Cesar Chavez.
12:27Once again, the referee in charge of this bout,
12:34to give instructions, Mills Lane.
12:40All right, gentlemen,
12:41this is for the championship of the world.
12:43We're going through all the instructions one time.
12:46Protect yourself at all times.
12:48Any questions on the challenger?
12:50Any questions on the champion?
12:51Let's get it on.
12:52Round one, scheduled for 12,
13:08as Hector Camacho looks on,
13:09awaiting Julio Cesar Chavez,
13:12September the 12th.
13:13Chavez, generally a slow starter,
13:15usually works the body in the early rounds,
13:17hoping to accumulate punches,
13:20the accumulative effect,
13:21producing an easy knockout in the later rounds.
13:23Very economical puncher,
13:25and he can also take a punch very well.
13:28And there's no surprise to most people.
13:29Mitchell come out moving,
13:30trying to use a jab,
13:31give him a little lateral movement.
13:32I'll be surprised to see if he tries
13:34to get inside at all early
13:35to hurt Chavez,
13:36or at least gain the respect
13:37that he thinks he needs.
13:38Mitchell making his debut
13:40as a super lightweight,
13:42the 140-pound weight division.
13:44Touched on it before,
13:45just an unbelievable story.
13:47Prior to a recent fight,
13:48January 14th,
13:49against Brian Payton three fights ago,
13:51was found homeless,
13:52living in the street
13:53in a cardboard box on drugs
13:55one week before the fight.
13:57He trained one week for the fight
13:59and won it,
14:00a 12-round decision.
14:02His frustration began
14:03when he was undefeated,
14:04being turned down by top 10 fighters,
14:07suffered depression
14:07after his first and only loss
14:09for the WBA junior lightweight title
14:11in 1990.
14:12Through all of this,
14:13he was basically
14:14a small-town kid
14:15overwhelmed by the big city,
14:18Philadelphia.
14:19His problems became severe.
14:21There's a right-hand by Chavez.
14:23And as recently
14:24as this past January,
14:25he was living in a box,
14:28literally homeless,
14:28hiding from his handlers.
14:30But he's come out
14:31in the open, Bobby,
14:32tonight,
14:32fights for his biggest purse
14:34and reported $115,000
14:35against the great
14:37Julio Cesar Chavez.
14:38What a story.
14:39Well, you certainly have
14:40to give Mitchell a lot of credit.
14:41I mean, that's just
14:41a hell of a turnaround
14:42and it takes a good man
14:43to do it.
14:46Past the midway point
14:47of round one,
14:49Chavez, 80-0,
14:5166 knockouts,
14:53has garnered five world titles
14:54in three different
14:55weight categories
14:56and owns the longest
14:58streak of wins
14:59at the start of a career
15:00by any boxer in history.
15:02And, of course,
15:03widely recognized
15:04as the best pound-for-pound
15:05fighter in the world.
15:07What could possibly be said
15:08about him
15:08that hasn't already been said?
15:09It would only be repetitious.
15:10He does everything
15:11so very well.
15:12And Mitchell doing
15:13basically all,
15:14the only options
15:15that he has really here
15:16is moving, moving,
15:17covering up.
15:20But, of course,
15:21at a moment's notice,
15:22Chavez has the ability
15:23to just turn it on,
15:25completely change
15:26the tempo
15:26of a fight
15:28to his favorite,
15:29upgrade the quality
15:30of his punches,
15:32administer punishment,
15:33which really gets
15:33the crowd into a frenzy,
15:34which in turn
15:35gets his adrenaline
15:36going more.
15:36Mitchell boxing
15:37boxing a little south
15:38going now,
15:39switching back and forth,
15:40trying to confuse him
15:40a little.
15:41Mitchell saw the marquee
15:43advertising Chavez Camacho
15:45September the 12th,
15:46which they put up
15:47just today.
15:48The report is
15:49he was not happy.
15:50There goes the mouthpiece
15:51of Mitchell.
15:53Well, that's a mark
15:53of a prideful man
15:54to see.
15:55It must be thought of
15:56as a stepping stone.
15:56It has to be offensive.
15:57Very upset when he saw that.
16:01Final seconds of the first round.
16:03Fall.
16:10Iui莽玫es.
16:12They're on the other way.
16:12They're on the other way.
16:17They're on the other way.
16:22They're off.
16:23Time so much.
16:26They're nothing.
16:27They're in the other way.
16:30They're on the other way.
16:32Guys.
16:32And here we see Chavez backing Mitchell up to the ropes using the left hook, and there
16:38goes the mouthpiece.
16:39Lean out of his mouth.
16:40To Mitchell's credit he fought back hard.
16:43It's the same thing from another angle.
16:45Again, constant pressure backing to the ropes using the double left hook.
16:49Again, mouthpiece and Kline out.
16:53Wipe that stuff down a little bit.
16:58Wipe that stuff down a little bit, will ya?
17:00You heard Mills Lane, who's also a district judge in Reno, telling the Mitchell corner to wipe the Vaseline off the face.
17:12How does Mitchell plan to fight Chavez?
17:15He told us by attacking the body because he's usually in a low crouch.
17:19That's pretty true.
17:20There he is right now in that low crouch.
17:22The big weapon has to be the left hook, says Frankie Mitchell.
17:25And he'll try to keep the jab on the face of Chavez.
17:28Unfortunately, take an awful lot of risk going to Chavez's body.
17:31Something Taylor did get away with with his speed.
17:33We'll see if Frankie can pull off the same.
17:37And the chance of Chavez.
17:40Mitchell, as we said, is stepping up in weight.
17:43He says he picks out, gets up to about 150, then comes down.
17:47Interesting approach.
17:48I'm wondering if Chavez didn't take the fight as serious as usually.
17:51He looked to be a pinch over the weight.
17:53And two or three times, took off his shorts, took off his undershorts in front of a lot of people.
17:57And just barely made the way.
18:06To his credit, Mitchell is fighting back.
18:07He's throwing some uppercuts and some hooks.
18:08Nice combination.
18:09Mitchell really a fighter who has two styles.
18:14He can box.
18:15He can also trade punches.
18:16Come on.
18:17He wants to jab and move early on.
18:20And it's only the second round.
18:21It is scheduled for 12.
18:26Chavez in his last fight against a game Angel Hernandez.
18:29Close to 15,000 fans at El Torreo Stadium.
18:32You saw it here on Showtime from Mexico City.
18:34Ho, ho, ho.
18:35All right.
18:36Chavez just brings out such nationalism from the fans.
18:39All right.
18:40Get him up.
18:41Doing the same from his followers here.
18:43Something that impressed me in the last fight with Chavez.
18:45When he gets his man hurt, he doesn't headhunt.
18:46He goes to the body.
18:47He goes back to the head, back to the body.
18:49A very complete fighter.
18:51Well, we observed from his fight with Hernandez at Southpaw
18:54that it didn't bother Chavez at all.
18:56Keeping in mind that the September 12th showdown is against the Southpaw.
19:00He's landed a couple of pretty clean shots.
19:02And Mitchell's taking them very well.
19:03Not showing any real bad effects.
19:05And if you notice, his face is a little red, Chavez.
19:07Mitchell's landing some nice light combinations, but a lot of them.
19:10And Chavez will always come in.
19:15Willing to take shots.
19:16Often has no regard for the punching power of an opponent.
19:21Mitchell has 13 knockouts and 29 victories.
19:24He's 29 and 1.
19:25Get him up, Mitchell.
19:26Come on.
19:28A notoriously slow starter, Chavez, has been documented.
19:32And I think right here, Mitchell's taking a little bit of a shot.
19:35The close-in fighting right above us.
19:41Get him up, both sides.
19:47Get him up, both sides.
19:49Chavez told our Steve Farhood he is praying that he wins.
19:54And he was praying that Camacho would win.
19:56Well, one of those prayers was answered.
19:58Guy's looking for number two.
20:00Well, this prayer's all in his hands.
20:02Oh, a solid right hand at the bell by Chavez.
20:14Don't know that.
20:15Just keep touching them up.
20:16Bing, bing, bing, bing.
20:17Boom.
20:18Just touch one, two, three, and drop one in, right?
20:23Move your feet.
20:24When you be punching, walking around, move the feet with it.
20:28Breathe deep.
20:30When I say underneath, go to the chin with him.
20:36Go to the body, from the body to the chin.
20:42Once again, a very interested spectator.
20:46He knows the cameras on him, of course, so he gets up and goes into one of his anthems.
20:51Asking, what time is it?
20:54And, of course, the fans reply, Chavez time.
20:57You know what really frightens me?
20:58I have two pair of the same sunglasses.
21:01Come on, let's go, bring her out of here.
21:07Round three, scheduled for 12.
21:11Frankie Mitchell appropriately named the Matador.
21:14Well, tonight he goes up against the Bull.
21:18Big left hook by Chavez, and Frankie Mitchell firing right back.
21:21Very impressive.
21:26Well, Mitchell no slouch.
21:28Rated number six by the WBC as a lightweight.
21:31Number nine by the WBA, number seven by the IVF.
21:35Right now, I think some of the left hooks to the body are really taking their toll on Mitchell.
21:40I think Mitchell embarrassed Chavez a little bit in certain points in the first round.
21:46Chavez came back out here to establish who's in charge.
21:50Mitchell does have a lot of heart, alluding to the point you made in his first fight after his only defeat.
21:58He came back and won the NABF lightweight title.
22:00A second round knockout of Kenny Weiss in July of 91.
22:04He's defended it three times, but now he steps up.
22:07Here we see him switching to south for again, trying to confuse Chavez, give him some different looks and different angles.
22:12Maybe effective, maybe not, but so far not too bad.
22:15Well, the southpaw effect of Hazel Hernandez in his last fight.
22:19Oh!
22:20Did not deter Chavez.
22:21He just landed with a stiff right.
22:23An explosive right.
22:24And now Chavez rucking the court on.
22:26One of the better finishers in the game this fight could be over in this round.
22:29And Mitchell is in deep trouble as he goes down for the count.
22:39Gets up at five.
22:42He went down on his own, but he is still hurt.
22:50So it happens at about the midway point of round three.
22:54He shouldn't just cover up on the ropes here.
22:55He should tie up Chavez.
22:56It's the only way for him to get out and survive.
23:00And like a shark sensing the finish, Chavez has him down for the second time.
23:05Four, five, six, seven, eight.
23:08Powerful close to the body.
23:10Chavez has to get to the neutral corner.
23:12He started yelling at Kamacho, leaning over the ropes and towing each other right now in the middle of a fight.
23:16You okay?
23:18Yeah.
23:19All right.
23:21No three knockdown rule.
23:2440 seconds to go.
23:26Can Mitchell survive the round?
23:30And he's fighting back hard.
23:33Good left hook by Mitchell.
23:34Right on.
23:35Stop Kamacho right in his trap.
23:36Another one by Frankie Mitchell.
23:39Mitchell landing two solid lefts to the face of Chavez.
23:46But Chavez, undaunted, spins him around and airs it out.
23:51There goes.
23:52Again, not a mouthpiece.
23:53Not a mouthpiece.
23:54Somebody threw something into their ring.
23:55Again, the left hook, the only punch that's keeping Chavez off him.
23:58He's landing it, but not enough.
24:00He's got to tie him up and get through the round.
24:02Mitchell cornered.
24:03And that's it.
24:04He made it through.
24:05Mitchell's forcing Chavez to fight early.
24:08If you ever do that in here, better not do it again.
24:11Nice, buddy.
24:12Great fun.
24:13Okay, we have two guys here.
24:14Yeah, you're okay.
24:15Just relax.
24:16Check the legs out, Frank.
24:17Check the legs out.
24:18Don't move no water.
24:19God damn it.
24:20I'm using that to team.
24:21Jesus Christ.
24:23Mitchell gets hit on the ropes with a good right hand, gets in trouble.
24:40Chavez is a good finisher that he is, moves in for the kill.
24:45And somewhere along the way, he just drops down the knee to take the rest.
24:48He's in trouble, and he realizes it's almost over.
24:52Still working him, still working him.
24:57There he goes, down to that knee to take that rest.
25:01Here's the second knockdown.
25:03And again, he goes down to his knees.
25:05He needed the rest.
25:06Came back a little better after the second knockdown.
25:09And it's round four.
25:11Two knockdowns in that third round.
25:14And Mitchell, with blood coming from the right nostril, surviving.
25:20He's in trouble.
25:21He's in trouble.
25:22Vincent Chavez is an overwhelming assault.
25:23And as Bobby pointed out, perhaps no better finisher in the sport today.
25:27Usually finishes with a barrage and a variety of punches from all angles, both hands.
25:32He tried to do it there in the third round, but Mitchell able to withstand it.
25:35Mitchell's face showing the signs of the war.
25:37Looks as if he's gotten seven or eight hard rounds already.
25:39Amazing.
25:40A devastating puncher.
25:41Heavy-handed.
25:42And what a finisher.
25:43Accurate.
25:44He does it all.
25:46Oh, what a straight point by Chavez.
25:49And Mitchell's down again.
25:51A thunderous shot by Chavez.
25:54Feels safe to say this fight is either over now or it will be in a few seconds.
25:59He's up at nine, but it's over.
26:02Mills Lane waves it off.
26:04It's all over here on the fourth round.
26:14A riveting punch by Chavez that ended it all.
26:17And it will be Chavez-Cavacho September the 12th.
26:33A TKO for Julio Cesar Chavez.
26:38Frankie Mitchell.
26:39Very game, intrepid, as courageous as one can be against this gentleman.
26:46He gets hoisted.
26:48The WBC super lightweight champion retains his title.
26:5381-0, 67 knockouts.
26:56His eighth title defense.
26:58There's his son Julio.
27:01The WBC.
27:04Taking the ride the victory lap around the ring with his dad.
27:09The relentless one Julio Cesar Chavez.
27:13Doing it once again.
27:16When he gets somebody in trouble like a shark at the sight of blood.
27:21He's in trouble.
27:22He's in trouble.
27:23He's in trouble.
27:24He's in trouble.
27:25He's in trouble.
27:26He's in trouble.
27:27He's in trouble.
27:28Well, here we see Chavez always being the aggressor.
27:30Mitchell backing up, backing up, trying to fend him off.
27:32Here he's moved to southpaw.
27:33Trying to do anything.
27:34Gets hit with the right hand.
27:35I mean, he was timed perfectly.
27:36This fight was on.
27:37So Mitchell.
27:44Surviving two knockdowns in the third, but he couldn't get up from this one.
27:47Here we see it again.
27:48A perfect straight right hand right down the pipe.
27:50Timed beautifully.
27:51Fights over.
27:56Mitchell staggering around in the corner.
27:59Again, one more time.
28:00Back him up.
28:01Back him up.
28:02Looking for a shot.
28:03Boom.
28:13And interestingly enough, as we check the official scorecards here, Bobby, one of the judges
28:18gave the second round to Frankie Mitchell.
28:20How do you like that?
28:21Well, everybody's got their own pair of eyes and opinions, I guess.
28:24It just would be hard for me to justify.
28:27Wow.
28:28But Chavez takes a TKO round four.
28:32And he didn't let it go to the judges' scorecards here in Las Vegas.
28:36He has such a good chin, too.
28:37When you hit him with his pretty bad punch, he'll catch him.
28:40And Hector Camacho campaigning once again.
28:48All right, let's get the official time as we go up into the ring to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
28:53Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time.
28:5656 seconds in round number four.
28:59The referee in charge, Mills Lane, stops the contest.
29:03The winner by way of technical knockout.
29:06He is still undefeated.
29:08Still the WBC super lightweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez.
29:18So there you have it.
29:23Julio Cesar Chavez side by side now with the Macho Man.
29:29And he can lay to rest Frankie Mitchell and now set his sights on the big showdown in September with the Macho Man, Hector Camacho.
29:39Here's a sellout crowd here of around 9,000 at the Hilton Center in the Las Vegas Hilton.
29:48We saw some outstanding action here tonight.
29:54We saw some outstanding action here, particularly the Julian Jackson-Thomas Tate fight.
29:57But right now, we've got the dignitaries standing by the ring with Steve Barhood.
30:03Steve?
30:04Thank you, Steve.
30:05Julio Cesar Chavez, another tremendous win.
30:08Gladys Terrosa, can you ask him, when he knocked Mitchell out, Mitchell turned southpaw and he landed a big right hand.
30:14Was that a message to Hector Camacho?
30:16He said that definitely that's a message to Hector Camacho that he wants to let him know that he can deal with the southpaw.
30:39It's just a few weeks, six weeks to the big showdown with Hector Camacho.
30:44Given what happened tonight, how does Julio Cesar Chavez feel about it?
30:47He says he feels very good, his conditioning will continue, he will be training hard, and he'll be looking forward to Camacho in September.
31:03Did the fact that Hector Camacho scored a knockout tonight, did that impress Julio?
31:08Como Hector tuvo un knockout sobre su oponente, eso te impresion贸 alguno?
31:14De ninguna manera, voy a noquera Camacho el 12 de septiembre.
31:17Oye, he's not impressed at all.
31:19He said he was not impressed at all.
31:20He's gonna knock out Hector Camacho.
31:22All right, let's bring in Don King, the promoter of the big September 12th showdown.
31:27What do you think what happened tonight will do for that show?
31:31I think it's gonna be great.
31:32First of all, I want to say thanks to Tony Cox.
31:34Showtime is now number one in boxing, unquestionably.
31:37These kind of fights, quality, competitiveness is what makes Showtime number one.
31:41And now we've got the biggest fight of all, the two titans, the ultimate glory, the fight for it all,
31:46with Hector Camacho and Julio Cesar Chavez September the 12th and tickets on sale now.
31:51And they're already going briskly.
31:52Don, you seem to think that Hector can turn it around as he did tonight,
31:57but against Julio it'll be a little tougher.
31:59You seem to think he can turn it around and give Julio a real good fight.
32:03What you have now is Hector Camacho of old.
32:05You're seeing reflections of what he used to be.
32:07And now he's back training very hard, getting ready to fight.
32:10And you saw that today with the flashbacks, the way he fought this kid and knocked him out.
32:14I think it was a tremendous outing, so it lets the fans know that they got a great fight in store for them.
32:19And that's what really counts, giving them the quality.
32:21So SET and King Vision is going to put it on on September the 12th.
32:25And it's going to be great, ultimate glory, the fight for it all, the whole enchilada.
32:29Don, where do you go from here?
32:31I'm going to Frito-Lay and find Roger Enrico because this is a great promotion and Frito-Lay has to be involved.
32:37So Roger, I'll be coming to see you.
32:39Roger Enrico, y'all.
32:41All right, Hector Camacho.
32:43He says he hopes that Hector Camacho will not run away anymore.
32:48All right, we're not going to let Hector run away right now.
32:50Hector, come on in here.
32:51You were sitting right next to me during the fight.
32:54You saw Julio's work.
32:55What did you think?
32:56Well, professional speaking, a boxer like me, that's what it takes to beat him.
33:02I got the jab to keep him off, the one-two to hurt him.
33:05I got the speed, the movement, the lateral movement to keep him off balance all day.
33:10He'll follow me all day.
33:11It's a repeat of the Ramirez fight.
33:13But this is the ultimate glory for me because y'all don't want to see the man do it.
33:17I am the Michael Jackson of the 90s.
33:20Yes!
33:21I almost knocked you out with the microphone there.
33:24I'm sorry, Hector.
33:26Hector, this is your camera right here, Hector.
33:29This one or that one.
33:30You fought, Hector, you fought very aggressively tonight against Eddie Van Kirk.
33:35Of course, that's not Julio Cesar Chavez.
33:37What kind of game plan can we look at when you fight the great Julio Cesar Chavez?
33:40Well, you can see the same game plan that you've seen today.
33:44But more stronger, more effective, more professional, and more masters.
33:49I am a scientific fighter.
33:51I needed a family.
33:52We got a family.
33:54He's a family, too.
33:55But he's bringing out the best out of me.
33:57I needed somebody like him.
33:59I'm not scared.
34:00I'm just scared to lose.
34:01All right.
34:02Well, there you go.
34:03Good luck to both of these guys.
34:04They're ready to go.
34:05And they'll be going on September 12th.
34:07We're going to be going right back now to Steve Albert at ring set.
34:10All right, Steve.
34:11You deserve the Medal of Honor for putting up with that.
34:14We'll be back in Las Vegas now to Steve Albert at ring set.
34:17All right, Steve.
34:18You deserve the Medal of Honor for putting up with that.
34:21We'll be back in Las Vegas next month for the much-anticipated showdown between Julio Cesar Chavez and Hector Macho Camacho for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
34:31For Chavez, a chance to silence the outspoken Camacho.
34:34Camacho for Camacho a chance to make boxing history.
34:41The undefeated champion.
34:55An outrageous challenger.
35:02Julio Cesar Chavez has set a standard of excellence unmatched in boxing.
35:10Hector Macho Camacho's fists can be as dazzling as his wardrobe.
35:17He's considered pound for pound the best fighter in the world.
35:23He's brash enough to believe he can do what no one else has done, defeat Chavez.
35:29We will fight.
35:30The power line is, you know, I got from the 11th to the 11th, which is 4-1.
35:35Yo creo realmente.
35:36Yo creo.
35:37Yo creo.
35:38Shut up.
35:39Shut up.
35:40Shut up.
35:41You better be quiet, please.
35:42Chavez's lofty status has made him a marked man, pursued by boxing's elite.
35:47It was inevitable that Camacho would come to challenge Chavez and attempt to make history.
35:54On September 12th, Chavez and Camacho will have their long-awaited showdown for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
36:01This bout will be the main event of a special pay-per-view telecast.
36:07I feel like I'm at a Beatles concert.
36:09The way these fans here are reacting to Julio Cesar Chavez.
36:12We're surrounded by wildness.
36:14Julio Cesar Chavez, Hector Camacho, September the 12th, won three-time champion against another three-time champion.
36:20Bobby, how do you view that?
36:21Well, certainly I think it's got to be a great fight.
36:23They both came out.
36:24They're impressive today.
36:25I think Chavez probably could not be disputed as being pound for pound the best around.
36:29Camacho is going to have to work that hand speed and foot speed to offset that, or he could run into the same fate as Frankie Mitchell.
36:35I thought the fans here were for you, not for Julio, until I realized what was going on here.
36:40How about tonight's card?
36:41Your final thoughts, particularly the Julian Jackson-Thomas Tate affair.
36:44It was a compelling fight.
36:45As I said, I thought it had the makings of the best fight of the night, and certainly it was a man's man's war.
36:50It was incredible.
36:51I think both fighters deserve an unbelievable amount of credit.
36:53I think they have better futures down the road.
36:55And the other two fights were basically as we thought they'd be, kind of one-sided.
36:58All right, let's recap tonight's triple header here on Showtime Championship Boxing.
37:03In the first fight you saw tonight, Hector Macho Camacho and Eddie Van Kirk.
37:07The winner was Camacho, who defeated Van Kirk by way of a TKO in round number four.
37:14In the second one tonight, the one that Bobby was alluding to, Jackson, a winner by unanimous decision.
37:20But what a fight it was as he retains his WBC middleweight title over a courageous Thomas Tate.
37:26And in the third fight of the evening, Julio Cesar Chavez, a winner by TKO round four, retaining his WBC super lightweight title over Frankie Mitchell.
37:41So that about wraps things up here at the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas, Nevada, for WBA Cruiserweight champ Bobby Ches, Ring Magazine, Steve Farhood, our entire crew.
