00:00:00Back in time ourselves during the course of the lunch break here at Thruxton.
00:00:03Touring car action from Thruxton in 1989 when it was the Esso British Touring Car Championship,
00:00:10the wonderful Sierra Cosworths, the sublime talent of Andy Rouse, the emerging talent of Tim Harvey.
00:00:18But there was also a character named Dave Brodie, and everyone's got a wonderful Dave Brodie story.
00:00:23He was a wonderful character.
00:00:25Everything he did on the track was not entirely legal, as he arrived at Thruxton,
00:00:30there were a few question marks standing over him as well.
00:00:33I remember standing on the grid and doing an interview with him in 1989,
00:00:37and he gave me this view of the class of 1989.
00:00:42There's only one person in this paddock that's ever been in front of me, that's Andy Rouse.
00:00:46The rest of them are a bunch of group end drivers, right?
00:00:48And why should they be in front of me? They never did before. Why should they do it now?
00:00:51I mean, Guy was a more spins and rock around the clock.
00:00:53Well, Frank Sittler's had more roles than Joe's Chilt Corner Cafe, right?
00:00:57And what sort of an example is that to set the public?
00:00:59I think it's diabolical.
00:01:00I've never seen driving, 26 years of racing in cars,
00:01:03I've never seen such pitiful, ridiculous driving like it in my life.
00:01:07It's no good to us doing anything other than winning.
00:01:09I don't want a close second or a close third, but we come here to win.
00:01:12And I love the little smirk from Tim Harvey in the car.
00:01:16We had so many smirks to choose from, to be honest.
00:01:18Yeah, we did. He was such a character, Dave Brody.
00:01:21I mean, he wrote a fantastic autobiography, which went into about five volumes,
00:01:26but nobody would publish it because it was so litigious.
00:01:28He had to publish it himself, but it's a brilliant read.
00:01:31And he was a strong character.
00:01:33I mean, you couldn't go near his car because it made your eyes water from the fumes out of the exhaust.
00:01:37And that really was the background to everything that happened at Thruxton
00:01:40because there was such a question mark over the composition of his fuel, let's say that.
00:01:45Yeah, I think it would have powered a NASA rocket, whatever it was, never mind a Sierra Cosworth.
00:01:49But he did like to turn up and cause a stir, and he certainly did that there.
00:01:56Well, Jade, this is long before your time, so sit back and enjoy.
00:01:59Thruxton 1989. I haven't said this for quite a while, but let's join Murray Walker.
00:02:05So, things more than a little fired up for this fifth round of the championship.
00:02:10And Dave Brody is true to his word, having claimed pole position from the driver he admires.
00:02:15In fact, having qualified almost a second faster than Andy Rouse.
00:02:20Second row, Rob Gravitt, winner of the opening round, and Tim Harvey in the Labatze era.
00:02:26Guy Edwards had qualified on the third row, but had no chance of making the race after his practice crash.
00:02:32But Mike Newman, he qualified well.
00:02:34Carl Jones and Graham Good make up the fourth row.
00:02:39Rows five and six, and behind them, James Weaver in the BMW M3
00:02:44had qualified just ahead of his Class B rival, Frank Sittner.
00:02:47John Clelland, the leading qualifier from Class C.
00:02:50Bill Dowsett in Class D.
00:02:52Round five of the Esso British Touring Car Championship.
00:02:55Once again, we hear from Murray Walker.
00:02:58There's Dave Brody in the white Sierra, and Andy Rouse on the right.
00:03:02Follow the pace car round for the rolling start.
00:03:04It's really hot at Thruxton.

00:03:08They're going to be tough on the tyres.
00:03:11Brody won last time, and Rouse the time before.
00:03:13But no-one's won twice this year, as off they go.

00:03:54Comes from Harpenden, and he's really got a struggle on his hands now.

00:03:59Meantime, up at the front, there are six Sierra Cosworths.

00:04:07And the winners of the first three rounds are first, second and third.
00:04:12And Rob Gravit in the red and white Sierra is challenging Andy Rouse for second place.

00:04:44In this morning's qualifying, he was harpooned by Guy Edwards.
00:04:48And he's had to rebuild the car.

00:08:43But up at the front, there is Dave Brodie still leading.
00:08:48Four seconds ahead of number 21, Rob Stravitz.
00:08:51Both of them in Ford Sierra Cosworths as the battle in the D-class between Crudgington and Dowsett continues.
00:08:59Now, Dave Brodie is coming up to catch these two.
00:09:03And it's not going to be very long before it happens.
00:09:06Dave, there he is in the background.
00:09:08Has been racing 26 years.
00:09:10He's confident.
00:09:11He's flamboyant.
00:09:13He's a real racer.
00:09:14There he is.
00:09:15And he is winning.
00:09:21Dave really wringing the last ounce of horsepower out of the Cosworth engine.
00:09:27He's got a comfortable lead.
00:09:28He's going to win.
00:09:29He's got the car set up absolutely beautifully.
00:09:32Crudgington and Dowsett coming down together towards the chicane.
00:09:37And Dowsett is starting to challenge.

00:09:56And now it's Rob Gravitt's turn.
00:09:59Up to Campbell, the right-hander, after they have cleared the left suite that they're into now.
00:10:05Brodie approaches Campbell.
00:10:09Dowsett and Crudgington behind him.
00:10:11And Rob Gravitt is about to take them both.
00:10:13But Crudgington is right up alongside Dowsett.
00:10:16He's going to take the lead.
00:10:18And Gravitt is going to take them both right on the apex.
00:10:21And they hit each other.

00:10:23Oh, my goodness.
00:10:24A full 360-degree spin.
00:10:27The wheel is off.
00:10:28The grass has caught fire.
00:10:30But Rob Gravitt looks at Dowsett out.

00:10:35A miraculous slip-hour.
00:10:37Both perfectly OK.
00:10:38As the fire marshals slip on the grass, they're going to have to jump down onto the bank to set about the fire.
00:10:45They've got it out already.

00:10:48That's a very nasty accident.
00:10:51Now, let's have a replay.

00:11:23Just tighten up the nut and Dave Brody can get away.
00:11:26But he's really out of the running altogether.
00:11:30And at Goodwood, on the way to Village Corner at 130 miles an hour,
00:11:36past the last of the tail enders goes Tim Harvey.
00:11:39And now, on the fastest part of the course,
00:11:41he can attack Andy Rouse and go for the lead.
00:11:45There is less than a second between the first and second places.
00:11:49Andy Rouse and Tim Harvey.
00:11:51Much less than a second now.
00:11:54Out of the chicane.
00:11:56Up towards Allard.
00:11:58Rouse goes over the line.
00:12:00Harvey goes up.
00:12:01And the chicken flag is out.
00:12:03They're stopping the race.
00:12:05Now, that must be because of the accident further ahead.
00:12:08They're all slowing down.
00:12:11So lucky for Andy Rouse.
00:12:13He wins.
00:12:14The first man to win twice this season.
00:12:17Tim Harvey second.
00:12:18Just as he looked likely to win.
00:12:20And Mike Newman third.
00:12:21And no wonder they stopped it.
00:12:24That's a real fire hazard.
00:12:26So, overall victory for Andy Rouse with Tim Harvey in second place, Mike Newman third, Carl Jones in fourth position, Mike Smith fifth, and Sean Walker sixth after a really exciting race.
00:12:41And a race that had a finish that came as a surprise to many and a relief to Andy Rouse.
00:12:49Luck had been on his side at last.
00:12:51I think so, yeah, for the better, fortunately.
00:13:01Well, that was hard going.
00:13:03Was the checker flag a complete surprise?
00:13:05What were things like down at the complex?
00:13:06Well, the accident occurred about seven laps before the end.
00:13:11And I thought the situation had been stabilised.
00:13:13But apparently, talking to the clerk of the course, there was fuel spilling out of one of the cars and running across the track.
00:13:18And that's what prompted the decision.
00:13:19But I thought things were stabilised, so I was watching the laps to go sign and planning the rest of the race.
00:13:25But there you are.
00:13:26So, you can't feel aggrieved at the decision, but unlucky nevertheless.
00:13:29No, on safety grounds, it was the right thing to do.
00:13:31But I'm sure my turn will count.
00:13:35Yeah, and of course, you did deliver in 1992.
00:13:39But lunch break is almost over.
00:13:40I haven't got time for any of that.
00:13:43They were wonderful days.
00:13:45I mean, driving that mighty Cosworth around here was quite something.
00:13:48Yeah, and look how good we were through the chicane.
00:13:50No curb hopping there, you see, respecting track limits.
00:13:54But yeah, they were fearsome beasts.
00:13:56560 horsepower and nine-inch wide tyres.
00:13:59And yeah, it was quite, every lap was a bit of an adventure.
00:14:02You could see all the arm twirling on.
00:14:03Early days of in-car cameras there as well.
00:14:06But it was good fun, good racing and great characters in the field.
00:14:10And Jade, when did you first become aware of the British Touring Car Championship and racing like this?
00:14:15So I don't want to make a massive point of it, but I wasn't even born when that race was happening.
00:14:19That's what I was hinting at.
00:14:20Yeah, so I was more the rapid fit Mondeo a la menu era.
00:14:25My dad used to sit me down on the sofa and get me to watch it.
00:14:27And then I've actually been in this paddock, whether it's working, racing or whatever else, since 2000.
00:14:32So I've been in it a while myself anyway.
00:14:35So yeah, love watching those clips back.
00:14:37Amazing.
00:14:37Yeah.
00:14:37But Paul, how did drivers in that era look up to Andy Rouse?
00:14:41I mean, what sort of standard did Andy set?
00:14:43We still speak about Andy Rouse's standard now, don't we?
00:14:46And how many titles he's won.
00:14:48He was one of the big names that I always looked for.
00:14:51Obviously, Tim as well.
00:14:53And that's not a joke, mate.
00:14:54I used to watch you guys regularly.
00:14:56It was great to watch.
00:14:58And Andy Rouse, legend.
00:14:59And it's great to watch that footage.
00:15:02And I wish people could actually see what we were just saying and how we were reacting to that.
00:15:07And it's obviously great to have you here as well, Steve.
00:15:09And saying Murray's name as well.
00:15:10We've all survived somehow.
00:15:12I mean, that chequered flag was a surprise to Murray Walker.
00:15:14And he was doing the commentary four days later.

00:16:35Tom Ingram's first win of 2025 comes at Thruxton.
00:16:42So the result of round 10 is now the grid for round 11, which is just a few minutes away here at Thruxton.
00:16:48So Tom Ingram will line up on pole position alongside Dan Camish.
00:16:52On row two, Josh Cook and Ash Sutton.
00:16:54Row three, Dan Rowbottom and Jake Hill.
00:16:57Tom Ingram now just nine points behind Ash Sutton in the championship standings.
00:17:02The cars are on the grid.
00:17:03Louise is down there.
00:17:04I think she's somewhere around row two.
00:17:07I am indeed seated.
00:17:09I'm down by Ash Sutton's car.
00:17:10You're looking at the front of the car and it was actually this little number plate.
00:17:14This sticker here was what caused the issue for Ash in that last race.
00:17:18Ash was one of four drivers who the number plate came off.
00:17:22And in Ash's case, it's basically your car ate your number plate, didn't it?
00:17:29Which cooked your radiator.
00:17:31Yeah, it got a little bit peckish, didn't it?
00:17:33So what's the chance of that?
00:17:35The quick fit sticker being sucked into the intake and ultimately blocking the path there, which caused a few other issues.
00:17:43So it's all fixed now, but it's just a bit of rot and lock that makes this race a little bit more entertaining.
00:17:49Well, it was an entertaining race already as it was.
00:17:51I mean, a great battle between yourself and Tom at the front.
00:17:53It got very lively at the chicane.
00:17:55Just tell us about that moment when you sort of, well, sort of used him to stop yourself going off.
00:18:00Is that me being a bit mean or?
00:18:02No, it's not.
00:18:03I mean, ultimately, me and Tom just touched as I hit the brake, sent the car into this horrible snap of oversteer.
00:18:10And thankfully, Tom was there.
00:18:12So he kept me straight and narrow.
00:18:14But obviously, we both jumped the chicane.
00:18:17It's just one of those little racing incidents under a bit of braking, under a bit of pressure.
00:18:22So, yeah, ultimately, if we got that issue, we were always going to be on the back foot.
00:18:27But please, we managed P4 ultimately with the issue and puts us in a sensible place now.
00:18:33I hope this one is trouble-free.
00:18:35Obviously, Ash wasn't the only one who had a few problems in that race.
00:18:38Paul is down at the back of the grid with another driver who had a little coming together.

00:18:44Yeah, it's not great when you're having to talk to me, obviously, because we're at the back of the grid.
00:18:48Centre Proctor having a little bit of contact with Gordon Shedden.
00:18:51Gordon, you have just got no luck at all.

00:18:56And it's not where you want to be, is it?

00:18:59You know, we had a good start.
00:19:01There was quite a lot happening at the start of that race.
00:19:02But, yeah, Proctor got excited and just, yeah, got rid of me out at Goodwood.
00:19:08So, it destroys our weekend yet again, which is just the frustrating part of it.
00:19:14So, you know, we got what we got now.
00:19:16We'll make the best of.
00:19:17But it's a tough ask out there at the minute with what we've got.
00:19:20What about the car in general?
00:19:21I know you had big problems with it at Brands Hatch.
00:19:23Have you gone forward with set-up with found a problem?
00:19:26What's the score?
00:19:27Because you look pretty racy.
00:19:28Yeah, to be fair, the handling of the car is really good.
00:19:31It's just slow as anything in a straight line compared to some.
00:19:34I mean, it's mind-blowing the speed that some things just drive past you at in a straight line.
00:19:39So, you know, we're trying to do everything that we can.
00:19:42But, you know, it's that much if you want to turn around quickly.
00:19:46But, you know, handling-wise, I'm happy.
00:19:47I think the car's in a good place.
00:19:49We've improved it a lot.
00:19:51But, yeah, we've got some limitations at the minute.

00:20:01We spoke briefly after qualifying yesterday.
00:20:03You, I mean, nobody enjoyed that session.
00:20:05But it was particularly troublesome for you guys, wasn't it?
00:20:09Yeah, it was tricky, Lou.
00:20:10It was just so much standing water that, you know, for us,
00:20:12we've just got to get out the throttle to stop the car from spearing off, you know, off the road.
00:20:16But, you know, new day today.
00:20:18Race one wasn't too bad.
00:20:19We went forward two places, which was good.
00:20:22And now, yeah, looking to try and maybe try and sneak a podium in this one.
00:20:26I had a chat with Craig, your engineer, just before this race.
00:20:30And he was saying, the thing with you guys at the moment is you're having,
00:20:34last year you came to a race pretty much knowing what you got.
00:20:36Whereas this time out, you're having to hunt for everything at every single track.
00:20:41Yeah, that's exactly it.
00:20:42I mean, it's not easy this year, Lou.
00:20:44You know, I mean, it never is.
00:20:46But, you know, last year things just seemed to fall right, you know,
00:20:49and we had a great car.
00:20:51This year we're just struggling for straight line speed
00:20:53and just general, you know, a bit of balance here and there.
00:20:56So it's not quite as easy at the moment.
00:20:58We're just trying to capture every point we can and just enjoy it.
00:21:01Made some changes for this one?
00:21:03Made a couple of changes to the rear of the car.
00:21:04So hopefully we can prolong the tyre life a little bit longer
00:21:07and carry on going forward.

00:21:31it was a case of trying to hold position really
00:21:33after the good quality we had yesterday.
00:21:35This is where we should be and where we deserve to be.
00:21:38So this race is, for me, about trying to move forwards.
00:21:42You know, this is, yes, still the best weekend we've had up to date,
00:21:45but I want to be battling for a podium.
00:21:47So I'm giving it everything in this one.
00:21:49What have you done or have you done anything to the car ahead of this race
00:21:53just to give yourself a little bit more pace, a bit more speed?
00:21:55Yeah, so understeer was a huge issue for me in race one.
00:21:59We did very little running in the dry on Saturday,
00:22:01so I had no real idea setup-wise what we needed to do.
00:22:04So I found we were struggling for turning in on the front in race one.
00:22:08So we changed a few bits to try and help with that.
00:22:11We seem to be losing more on the back straight than anything else,
00:22:14but if we could get through the corners as quickly as possible,
00:22:16then the rest will be what it is.
00:22:19Good stuff. Sounds easy when you put it like that.
00:22:21So good luck.
00:22:22We are for a quick break,

00:22:59Yeah, it was rather wet in here yesterday with all that torrential rain.
00:23:02We feel a bit safer.
00:23:03There was a lot of water, a lot of cabling,
00:23:04but we've survived yesterday,
00:23:06and we're ready for what's going to be another lively race.
00:23:08That first one, I think, surprised a few people
00:23:10with just how many battles there were up and down the field.
00:23:12Thruxton always provides great racing.
00:23:14The cars are right on the limit.
00:23:16I love watching the cars here dancing and boat-weaving and bobbing right on the limit,
00:23:20but I think we're in for a really cracking race, too.
00:23:23I can't wait to see what Josh Cook can do off-road two.
00:23:26Fastest man in race one.
00:23:27Can he add to those ten wins?
00:23:29And, of course, there was good pace out of Ashland's car
00:23:31before it had that problem,
00:23:32so we can anticipate him to be back up the front
00:23:35fighting for another win right now.

00:23:40It's going to be a cracking race.

00:23:55He wasn't involved in that incident,
00:23:57but Mikey had his own issues in that earlier race.

00:24:18I've pressed the team radio for this moment as well
00:24:22because what the team have done in between races
00:24:24is done a complete and utter engine change
00:24:26and they've got me back out on the track now,
00:24:29so we've got a fighting chance.
00:24:30There's still two races to go.
00:24:32There's plenty to play for.
00:24:32I'm so proud of the team.
00:24:34They're just fantastic.
00:24:36That is a massive job to be done in that short space of time.
00:24:39So I guess now we're thinking forward to race three.
00:24:41Get up the front now or as close to the top 12
00:24:44as you can for that reverse grid, yeah?
00:24:45I mean, we saw what can be done with Josh Cook in race one there.
00:24:52I saw him siming his way through the pack.
00:24:54So, you know, if we can get ourselves up to, up into that sort of top 12,
00:24:59give ourselves a reverse grid chance,
00:25:01then, you know, we could salvage something pretty good from the day still.
00:25:04You know, race three was pretty kind at Snetterton.

00:25:20Yeah, in actual fact, what they did was they took the whole of the front clip
00:25:23off Nick Halstead's car,
00:25:25which was sitting there in the garage being unused.
00:25:27So, they literally just took the front off that car in complete form
00:25:30and put it on Mikey Doble's car.
00:25:32So, in a way, they were quite lucky that Nick Halstead wasn't here
00:25:36because they had spares all ready to go.
00:25:39It shows how innovative touring car teams need to be
00:25:41to keep things on track over a busy day.

00:27:30I know the option tyres make a big difference
00:27:33and make a great show,
00:27:34but it's quite nice occasionally just to see them all on the same tyre.
