00:00On fire here in hour number one right here at the early line on the Sports Grid Network down to right side and Joe Ranieri.
00:06Yesterday was cut down day in the NFL. What did that mean? Teams had to drop from like 80 players down to 53 players by four o'clock.
00:13A lot of people got fired yesterday, but have no fear. The practice squads here, it used to be like you can only be in the league like two years max to be on the practice squad.
00:20There's like five or six slots. That's no longer the case. And practice squads now could have up to 16 players.
00:25So a lot of these players that were cut will be added back to the practice squad, making roughly $13,000 a week.
00:31A pretty good gig if you can get it. Notable cuts yesterday. Marquez Valdez-Scantling, which is interesting one because he does one job and does it pretty well, Joe.
00:39Runs full speed downfield. He's a long, lengthy guy. Can open up the offense.
00:43Just signed a new deal with, I think it was what, Seattle. One year, like four, five, four, four and a half, five million dollars with a signing bonus.
00:49Got cut. That one really raised my eyebrows yesterday. But cut down day, we didn't get a lot of explosive players.
00:55There are some name players on that list, but how do you think it went overall?
00:59Well, I love it. I mean, the Seahawks are actually paying Marquez Valdez-Scantling $3 million just to go away, which is hilarious, right?
01:08I mean, to be cut and be like, all right, here's the $3 million check. See you later.
01:13Okay, we're good to go. I mean, signed a one-year deal earlier.
01:17Now they got to give him his money. It's guaranteed. So, interesting cut by the Seahawks, to say the least there.
01:24But a lot of other veteran guys, both offense and defense, are interesting.
01:30I mean, Mike Edwards with Kansas City is a guy that is a seven-year safety that Spags absolutely loved.
01:37He is no longer on the Kansas City Chiefs. They cut him.
01:41And Hilton, in fact, in Miami was another guy that he was one of the most experienced guys they had on the team.
01:47In the secondary, he is no longer playing on the Miami Heat.
01:51They signed Rasul Douglas.
01:53So, yeah, there's a lot of guys, I think, are familiar names that will be wearing different uniforms and picked up before it's all said and done.
02:01Yeah, and how about this one, too? You take a look at that list where, you know, C.J. Henderson was a former, you know, high pick at the quarterback position.
02:08They expect to bring him back possibly to the practice squad.
02:11But Xavier Restrepo, who's a very good wide receiver, slot wide out in Miami, and the reason I bring that up is he was in Tennessee and cut from Tennessee.
02:17It was one that was like, hey, maybe you have a kinship there with Cam Ward and a comfortability at a wide receiver.
02:21Not to say he would start, but not making that team.
02:24We'll see if he winds up on the practice squad again because we'll find a lot of that information out once waiver claims clear and these guys can get back to the practice squad.
02:30But it is what it is.
02:31Actually, 90 players down to 53 on cut day and away you go into the regular season.
02:37You got this week of practice and next week it's game week for everybody in the NFL, which includes that Thursday night football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.
02:45But as we talked about, too, cut down day means that, yes, teams making the roster, teams making the roster set, guys looking for jobs here.
02:51But also, you usually get a better picture of who's going to be in that quarterback room.
02:55And for the New Orleans Saints, they made their quarterback decision.
02:58They drafted Tyler Shuck in the draft this past year.
03:01He didn't make it through to be their starting quarterback.
03:03It's Spencer Rattler now that's going to start over him some big times there in New Orleans.
03:09But what do we think about that where you draft a quarterback?
03:11And I guess your team is so bad it doesn't really matter, but I don't think it's a great look.
03:15Like sometimes when Joe Flacco beats you, it's like, yeah, the guy won a Super Bowl.
03:18He's been around the block, consummate professional.
03:19He's going to steady the ship for us.
03:21But what do we see out of Spencer Rattler that shows he's just the right starter at the time?
03:25Or, Joe, is it, we're not going to be good.
03:27I don't want to beat up my rookie quarterback.
03:30Well, exactly.
03:31It's the lesser of two evils, right?
03:32You know you're not winning anything with Spencer Rattler.
03:35So what do they call that?
03:36A placeholder, right?
03:38I mean, you know, Rattler was barely, what was it, 150th, I think, overall pick in 2024.
03:45He was sitting behind Derek Carr.
03:47And, by the way, Jay Kaner, who they ended up releasing now because Rattler ended up winning the job.
03:54But, you know, all of a sudden now they had to throw poor Rattler into the fire because they didn't have anybody else.
03:59So, again, at least he has been there and done that.
04:02It is the new head coach, of course.
04:04So we'll see if maybe he can dial something up with Kellen Moore calling the plays.
04:09But it really is the lesser of two evils right now for New Orleans who are clearly in rebuild mode.
04:15You got two home games to start the season down in the Dome.
04:19The Arizona Cardinals come to town Sunday, September 7th, a 1 o'clock game.
04:22And the week after that, it's the San Francisco 49ers coming to town for another home game at 1 p.m.
04:27And sometimes new coaches, they do make the right decision.
04:30Maybe for the franchise, hey, if Tyler Shuck was even.
04:33But Spencer Rattler has started games in the NFL.
04:35Clearly he was the better quarterback in the preseason.
04:37You want to get off on the right foot.
04:38Even if it means, Joe, you get a split out of those first two games, which would be great for them.
04:42Say, okay, let's get the foundation going, work hard in practice.
04:45Eventually, Shuck's going to be that quarterback.
04:46But I'm not just going to throw him out there in maybe a winnable game against the Arizona Cardinals
04:50because he's just a rookie quarterback and want to see what he has.
04:53Maybe it's Spencer Rattler's spot and he keeps that there.
04:56Other news, Joe, the San Francisco 49ers, Brandon Ayuk.
04:59He's not going to be available for the first four games.
05:01And that team is injured already entering into the season at multiple positions here,
05:06particularly at wide receiver.
05:07Is it going to be all CMC?
05:09And also your thoughts on Ayuk having a productive season after then missing the first four games?
05:13Well, they need to get him back.
05:15I mean, my goodness.
05:17Here we go again with the 49ers.
05:19Injuries completely derailed them a year ago.
05:23And now some of those same injuries are starting to creep over into the start of this season.
05:28They weren't particularly healthy during the preseason either, Donnie, on both sides of the ball,
05:33especially in the trenches.
05:34So, you know, take a deep breath.
05:36At some point, maybe some of that positive injury regression will hit the 49ers.
05:42But it's clear Ayuk is a game changer.
05:46You need him on the field with your newly minted $200 million quarterback in Brock Purdy
05:52that needs some weapons to throw to.
05:56Exactly.
05:57It's going to have George Kittle out there.
05:58But Kittle, a little bit banged up in the preseason.
05:59Ricky Pearsall banged up in the preseason.
06:01Jennings banged up in the preseason.
06:03You're waiting to see what we're getting out of Christian McCaffrey, who we're led to believe is healthy.
06:07And maybe he can be that bell cow to start the season.
06:09But you always want your top wide receivers because you are looking at Brock Purdy.
06:13As Joe said, he made a lot of money this offseason by waiting out that contract here and finally cashing in.
06:19But, you know, he used to whip the football around to on the outside.
06:21Hey, there's Debo over there.
06:22Debo right there.
06:23He's in Washington now.
06:24Hey, there's Brendan Ayuk on the other side.
06:26He's not going to be there for the first five games.
06:27So, leaning on guys like Jennings and Pearsall, that could change some things.
06:30Or, did you see more activity there for George Kittle and also McCaffrey?
06:34I'm not high on the 49ers this season.
06:37And I just don't like the way they're even starting the season right now, Joe.
06:40No, but they did make the trade for what?
06:43The sky from Kansas City, right?
06:45They made that.
06:45They realized what was going on in that room.
06:48And they needed to get some depth in that wide receiver room.
06:52And they did.
06:52But, again, that schedule is so – it's the easiest schedule in the NFL this year.
06:58So, they should have more than enough until IU can get back.
07:02I'll tell you, by the way, the NFL, we dodged a bullet as the fans.
07:06Can you imagine if Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift got engaged and then the Chiefs had won the Super Bowl last year?
07:12Opening night, the circus it would be in Kansas City.
07:15The Eagles saved us from that and more.
07:17We still got to talk about Kansas City.
07:19They got a big game week number one.
07:21We'll be back.
07:21If you thought NFL cut down day was big yesterday, wait till you hear this next story, which we alluded to in our 7-7 topic.
07:28Somebody's getting a ring, and it's not Travis Kelsey for winning a Super Bowl last year against the Philadelphia Eagles.
07:33Jalen Hurts and the boys got that ring.
07:35But you know who is getting a ring?
07:36It's Travis Kelsey giving a ring to Taylor Swift, an engagement ring here.
07:41They are set to be married.
07:42I got to ask you this too, Joe.
07:43Like, how – is this next offseason's biggest deal?
07:46Or is this something where they wait like a year and a half to make sure?
07:49Because I have a feeling of this as well.
07:52If he didn't get engaged now, they're eventually going to get married.
07:56Wouldn't you like to just go out in style?
07:57Like, I actually thought there was a chance last year that Kelsey was going to retire if they had won the Super Bowl, even maybe lost the Super Bowl.
08:02He didn't.
08:03But I got a feeling.
08:04Doesn't this feel like it's Kelsey's last year in the NFL if he's going to get married to Taylor Swift?
08:09I think it just feels that way to me.
08:11It absolutely could.
08:13If, Donnie, we're assuming they didn't quietly, privately already tie the knot here.
08:19Ah, here we go.
08:19You got to get – that could also possibly be it.
08:22I'm just saying you never know here in this realm.
08:27But usually NFL weddings, February, March, April, May, before the players have to head back to the practice facility.
08:37So Josh Allen, I believe, was a guy that just got married in May this year to his longtime girlfriend, Haley Steinfeld.
08:46So I would imagine if he's not playing, then he can get married whenever he wants next year if this is the final go of it.
08:53But if he is planning on making one more go next year, you're probably talking February to May, somewhere in that ballpark.
09:01Like, it seems like the wedding might be too big.
09:03Like, you can't even plan it over, like, the next seven, eight months.
09:06Like, it has to be maybe the next offseason after that because we're not talking about let's go down to the justice of the peace and we'll fly to Cancun for a couple days and have our honeymoon.
09:14It feels like this is going to be an extravaganza.
09:16And also, if it is, like, where does this marriage take place?
09:20Is it in Kansas City?
09:21Is it in, like, East Coast, like Connecticut?
09:23Is it in New York City?
09:24Is it some extravagant place like, you know, Greece or is it in Hawaii?
09:28Like, where does this wedding actually take place for you, Joe?
09:32Wherever the hell they want it to, Donnie, because they can afford to go and get married on the moon if they wanted to.
09:39And I would imagine they might just make it a nonstop world tour wedding.
09:44They could get married on tour in every city in just about every country around the world if they felt like it.
09:51That's what we're talking about with these two.
09:54But the bottom line is, whatever it is, if they want the paparazzi and they want the media to be a part of it, then, yes.
10:03Then it'll be someplace where it can be controlled and then that will absolutely happen.
10:08And otherwise, they'll just do it in private and not tell anybody.
10:12I mean, here's what could happen, too.
10:13You're looking at maybe the best album in the history of pop.
10:17If somehow Travis Kelsey messes up, they don't get married, we'll get married and end up splitting up,
10:23you are going to get a double-album, 24-song feature that is going to crush the Chiefs and crush Kelsey and damage ratings in the NFL.
10:32Because those Swifties, they won't be coming back to the NFL anytime soon.
10:35But that's the biggest news of the day.
10:36But for us, football fans, it's not Kelsey getting married.
10:40It's what Kelsey is going to do on opening night for the Kansas City Chiefs, which is a Friday night in Brazil.
10:45Mahomes, Herbert, three-and-a-half to three-point favorites, depending on where he's shopping at here for Kansas City.
10:50But am I wrong in looking at that total, Joe, and saying, no, hold on now.
10:55I saw the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers go toe-to-toe in week one on ice skating and rink and go up and down the field on each other.
11:01Am I wrong or is just the tendency that we like over is to see that 45-and-a-half and go, wait a minute here.
11:08Yeah.
11:08No, it's – listen, Kansas City played its starters a lot this preseason.
11:14And they showed up and they showed out.
11:17So, obviously, the Kansas City Chiefs thought it worth it after getting blown out in the Super Bowl by, what, 18 points, Donnie?
11:27I mean, they were down 34-0 in the game at one point here.
11:31And what we know history tells us, that teams that get blown out by more than a couple of touchdowns in the Super Bowl when they start the next year, it hasn't gone well, Donnie.
11:42Four-and-seven straight up, two-and-nine against the number in week one.
11:46So, there's usually that Super Bowl hangover for the loser.
11:51And we'll see if that's exactly what the Chiefs are going to have here as they open up the season against the Chargers.
11:57Now, if you take a look at the last two years that the Eagles and the Chiefs played in the Super Bowl, there's one thing that mattered differently.
12:02And here's how I'm going to play this game out.
12:04Sam Powell last year was an embarrassment on that football field.
12:07Probably be an embarrassment again this year, but the NFL wants money.
12:09They don't care if guys are slipping around.
12:10If you remember when the Philadelphia Eagles took on the Kansas City Chiefs, nobody could get any footing.
12:14And Patrick Mahomes was tremendous in that Super Bowl.
12:17Then you gave the Philadelphia Eagles defense footing in the Dome in New Orleans, and they smashed Patrick Mahomes.
12:22So, if you have a pretty good pass rush like the Chargers do, that can't get home on a slippery field, Mahomes, 325 plus, two touchdowns, doing whatever he wants in the pocket.
12:30Food for thought, people.
12:31So, slippery surface means the Chiefs can compete.
12:34Good surface, the Chiefs maybe wind up with a loft.
12:37How do we get to the last segment of the day so quickly here?
12:40Why?
12:40That's fun.
12:41That's information that you need to know.
12:43That sets the table for your sports grid day so you can now have all the ammunition you need to fire away this afternoon in Major League Baseball.
12:50Tomorrow's action on the gridiron, which starts week number one of the college football season.
12:55And then, come on now, away we go.
12:56NFL starts next week.
12:58And before you can blink, it will be Christmas.
13:00But let's savor these moments right now because we've waited so long.
13:03So, also, at this time of the show, we like to reach out to the public and ask their opinion on a question that we ask them with a specific topic.
13:11Here's Fade the Public.
13:11Here's Fade the Public.
13:41Chiefs ain't winning it this year.
13:43Take that.
13:45It's like we never learned from our mistakes.
13:48We did this for well over a decade.
13:51With a guy named Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.
13:54And we kept saying the Patriots every year, no, they're not going back to the Super Bowl.
14:02No, they can't.
14:03And every year, guess what?
14:06That's exactly what they do.
14:07Whether they win it or not is different.
14:09Getting there, very hard.
14:12Very hard to bet against them.
14:13It's easy to bet against them now.
14:15But let's review this question by week 10, Donnie, and ask it again.
14:21Ah, come on now, Joe.
14:22Vote no with me.
14:23It's fun to keep the Chiefs out of here.
14:24I just have to watch a Chiefs kingdom, you know, ESPN trilogy where they didn't win anything here.
14:30Why?
14:30Because you're filled up the Eagles safe.
14:32Like, the Eagles have saved the country from so much, Joe.
14:34We saved them from the Patriots by beating them in the Super Bowl in 2017.
14:38We saved the country from a three-peat that would have been exhausting to listen to with the Kansas City Chiefs in the last Super Bowl.
14:44That's what we love doing here in Philadelphia is helping out the rest of the country,
14:48which we will do again next week on Thursday by handling America's least favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys.
