Tensions are rising between Venezuela and the United States as Washington deploys additional naval forces, including the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie and submarine USS Newport News, to the southern Caribbean. The move is part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on Latin American drug cartels, including Mexico's Sinaloa and Venezuela's Tren de Aragua. In response, Venezuela said it is sending 15,000 troops to the Colombian border, increasing aircraft, drones, and boats for patrols. President Nicolas Maduro has promoted Venezuela's ambassador in Colombia to division general of the militia. Meanwhile, Venezuelans continue to enlist in local militias amid uncertainty over US military movements. Watch this video to know more.

00:00South America, where tensions are escalating between Venezuela and the United States.
00:05Washington has reportedly ordered additional ships to the Southern Caribbean
00:08as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to address threat from Latin American drug cartels.
00:14Reports say the Trump administration is deploying a guided missile cruiser along
00:18with a nuclear-powered submarine.
00:21Both are expected to arrive in the region by early next week.
00:25Now, with full details of the deployment still unclear,
00:28it's part of President Trump's broader effort to crack down on drug cartels,
00:32including designating Mexico, Sinaloa, and Venezuela's trend to Aragua as global terrorist groups.
00:40Just last week, the U.S. ordered an amphibious squadron to the Southern Caribbean.
00:45Three warships are reportedly already heading towards Venezuela's coast
00:49as Washington steps up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro,
00:53who was accused of heading a cocaine trafficking cartel.
00:56The Venezuelan leader has repeatedly claimed that his country is free of drug trafficking.
01:01In fact, he's accusing Washington of attempting to force a regime change
01:05and has urged citizens to join the Bolivarian militia,
01:09a civilian force connected to Venezuela's armed forces.
01:13Now, in response to the U.S. military movements,
01:15Venezuela announced on Monday that it will deploy 15,000 troops to the Colombian border.
01:20The country's interior minister said the government was deploying the troops
01:25to bolster security in states that border Colombia.
01:28He also added that the number of aircraft, drones, and boats
01:31to patrol the border rivers in the region will also be increased.
01:35The President has ordered a special operational reinforcement of Operation Rolampago del Catatumbo
01:43and has extended it to the state of Takaira with Peace Zone No. 1.
01:47In the first phase, he has ordered the deployment of 15,000 men and women on the Venezuelan side
01:53as reinforcements.
01:54On top of those, we already have up to the border of the state of Takaira.
01:58Next will come Peace Zone No. 2, and then Peace Zone No. 3.
02:02All of this is on the border with our sister country, Colombia.
02:06The interior minister also criticized the U.S. for sending in ships
02:10to a region where fewer drugs were leaving instead of Colombia.
02:15Why don't they deploy their fleet and aircraft here
02:18to combat the 87% of drugs that leave Colombia?
02:21Curiously, they deploy them and are concerned about where the supposed 5% leaves from.
02:27Hypocrites, their arguments fall apart.
02:31Now, before his minister's comments, Maduro responded with his own show of defiance
02:35promoting Venezuela's ambassador in Colombia
02:37to Division General of the Bolivarian Militia on Sunday.
02:42On behalf of our Liberator Simon Bolivar
02:44and our beloved Supreme Commander Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias,
02:48Mr. Ambassador, I have decided to promote you
02:50to Division General of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces
02:53in active reserve status.
02:57Now, while the government has projected defiance with promotions
03:00and harsh words for Washington,
03:02the mood on the streets has been less certain.
03:05Almost one week after the news of their deployment,
03:08uncertainty reigns among Venezuelans
03:09who reportedly don't know what to believe anymore.
03:12The arrival of a U.S. Navy destroyer
03:14has dominated conversations spilling from social media
03:17and state television into streets and dinner tables.
03:21Some Venezuelans see it as a political theater
03:23designed to distract from more pressing economic realities.
03:26I sometimes think these are things meant to cover up,
03:30so people think in that, and not in the reality we are living.
03:34The reality we are living in is that what we earn is not enough.
03:39Still, hundreds of Venezuelans lined up over the weekend
03:42at plazas and military posts across the country
03:45to enlist for the militias and help with security duties.
03:49We reject any threat coming from the empire.
03:55We do not agree with any of those threats
03:57that are coercing us and trying to subdue the nation.
04:00We are a sovereign, firm, and patriotic people,
04:03and we will always be free and independent.
04:06So as U.S. warships approach
04:08and Venezuela moves its troops along the Colombian border,
04:11the two-nation standoff appears to be growing
04:14more confrontational by the day.
04:19We are a sovereign, firm, and the two-nation standoff.
