00:03It takes a long time to hire police, so that gap is, I think the mayor is very smart

00:07into teaming with the president to get the people they need. The National Guard on the

00:13mall means police can be patrolling other areas. Being on the wrong side of crime is

00:18a dangerous thing. When you go into these other cities, these politicians are on the

00:23wrong side of a very important issue. Drew, how do Democrats message this? Because it

00:27does seem like they're struggling on this. They don't like the fact that this is happening,

00:33but at the same time, I've gone out to some of these wards, like Ward 8, and when you

00:38talk to people there, they say they like this. The people who live in these communities say,

00:43yeah, I want, even if the National Guard isn't arresting anybody, the fact that they're standing

00:49there makes people feel safer. So how do you message that from a Democratic standpoint if

00:54you want this to end? Well, Democrats want to see a crackdown on crime, exactly the same as

00:59Republicans do. One of the collateral effects of flooding the zone here with National Guard troops

01:07is that restaurant reservations are down something like 50 percent. Restaurants are starting to lay

01:12people off. Restaurants are starting to close. They're moving staff to suburban restaurants where

01:17people are still going. If everybody stays home, there will be a lot less crime, but there will be a

01:23lot less commerce also. People just won't go out. They're avoiding Adams Morgan. They're avoiding

01:27checkpoints, not because they think they'll get arrested. No one wants to sit in traffic.

01:32Keith, the president likes to point to success and declare victory. We have been hearing these reports

01:38of these crime numbers going down. He's been calling it the safest city in the world. Are we closer to

01:44the end of this now than the beginning? Well, people keep talking about the National Guard troops,

01:49but there's DEA, there's marshals, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, FBI. They've all taken different

01:55areas of the town. All the media is really covered as the National Guard troops. Well,

01:59because there's 2,000 of them and people don't know what they're doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you

02:04were asking, is it a safer place? It definitely is a safer place for people to come. I think you'll find

02:11that, like I said, one murder per month is an incredible number. People should be championing it.

02:16Again, I commend the mayor. We've had a lot of people have random killings here. The crime has

02:23been out of control. We shouldn't have to live like that. And I think the message on this of

02:27being tough on crime is a very smart place to be. And we just had a big announcement of the arrests

02:32and the death of that Capitol Hill intern, which made major headlines earlier this year, which led to

02:39a lot of this concern of a crime in the nation's capital. Drew, Keith, we thank you so much for joining
