Strong winds and showers across the far north of Scotland, with any showers in the north of England tending to fade away. The evening will begin dry for most, but a band of heavy rain push in over Northern Ireland, Wales and the South West, pushing northeastwards overnight. Into tomorrow, a wet and windy start with some heavy downpours for central areas. Yellow rain warnings are out for Wales. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the evening of 16/09/2025. 00:00Hello there, welcome to your Tuesday evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:05Now the first two weeks in September have been wet and the next 24 hours will be no exception.
00:12Let's pick up on some detail.
00:13First of all, this is the band of rain moving in through the early hours of Wednesday morning.
00:18Notice these bright colours, this is where the heaviest rain will be.
00:22And the reason why the Met Office has issued warnings for rain across the northwest of Wales
00:28and then southern counties of Wales.
00:30Through Wednesday, we're likely to see some high rainfall totals causing problems on the roads
00:35with that driving wind.
00:36Here's that first zone there and then another one extends across the south.
00:40You can see up to 17mm rain, particularly over the Upsilates.
00:44All in all, yes, a wet 24 hours to come across these parts and that rain pushing ever northwards
00:48and with that, some strong winds and high waves.
00:52So your bigger picture, through Tuesday night, a quieter spell across northern eastern areas.
00:57And then this is the deep area of low pressure tracks towards the northwest of Scotland.
01:02So that's where we'll see the strongest winds into Thursday as well.
01:05As these trailing weather fronts continue to feed in that cloud and outbreaks of rain.
01:09A blustery day on Thursday into Friday.
01:12The weather front does stall across more southern areas.
01:15As we lose the wind towards the north and we gain some drier, if not brighter weather.
01:20Still a few showers lurking out there.
01:22And that's how we see this evening.
01:24Strong winds across the far north of Scotland and those showers.
01:27Elsewhere, only showers tending to fade away as that cloud thickens.
01:30By late evening, you'll see that rain across northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Wales, northwest England,
01:36down towards the west country certainly.
01:37And then central southern England, Midlands and northern England later.
01:42Towards dawn, that rain arrives across southern, southwestern and central parts of Scotland.
01:47So yet again, a wet and windy start to the day.
01:50As temperatures hold up, it's going to be a relatively mild night away from the far north and northeast of Scotland
01:55where you'll see a dry start to the day.
01:58There could even be some brighter skies, but a bit cool in places.
02:01Still there's showers across the northern isles.
02:03First thing then, tomorrow morning.
02:05Here's that massive rain, so a wet and windy start, causing problems on the roads, poor visibility, spray,
02:10even some localised flooding where we're seeing those rain warning.
02:13The rain actually does clear northern Ireland by around mid-morning,
02:17but it extends across towards northwestern and central parts of Scotland through the day
02:22as it remains wet with that rain coming and going across Wales, as well as East Anglia.
02:27Northern England seeing some bits and spots as well, but it will tend to dry up here.
02:31So through the afternoon, you can see some dry weather attempting to come in towards the southeast.
02:37This is the weather front which trails towards the North Sea and up towards the far north of Scotland.
02:42The low is centred towards the west of Scotland, and that's where the strongest winds will be,
02:46and the reason why the winds will pick up some strength across the north and the west of Scotland
02:50through Wednesday and into Thursday.
02:52But certainly a better afternoon to come for your school run or your commute across western Scotland,
02:57as well as Northern Ireland, even down towards the southeast of England, southern Scotland as well as northern England.
03:03But this rain continues with that low cloud as well, outbreaks of rain, quite a dull and grim evening to come
03:10if you are travelling or stepping out across the Midlands as well as Wales.
03:14But look at these temperatures.
03:16Temperatures will be higher than what we've seen this week so far.
03:19In fact, we could see 20 to 22 across this eastern side of England.
03:2514, though, for Aberdeen with that breeze coming in, a strong wind from the sea.
03:30And for Northern Ireland, the central belt of Scotland, around 18 degrees Celsius for mid Wales, 20.
03:36And in fact, as we head through the next few days, you will notice a difference in the air.
03:41Yes, there will be some rain around, but some brighter skies.
03:45But temperatures will be, I'd say, above average for this time of year.
03:49It's going to feel differently as we head through Wednesday as well as Thursday in terms of how the air is going to feel.
03:55So it's going to feel a bit warmer, which is good news, really.
03:58But still that rain around into Thursday morning.
04:01A patchy rain at that.
04:03Could see the odd heavier burst towards Wales, northwest England through into Thursday.
04:07Daytime, Northern Ireland seeing that rain as this front pushes northwards.
04:10And then some brighter skies coming through, so that will help the temperatures towards the south.
04:15Still that driving wind through Thursday afternoon and those strong winds across the northwest of Scotland with some high waves here.
04:23That front straddles the country, northern England, down towards northwest Wales on Thursday afternoon.
04:27But take a look at these temperatures.
04:29We could see 23 or even higher eastern counties, Midland, and even across the central belt of Scotland and Northern Ireland up to around 18, if not 19 Celsius.
04:38But still a blustery day with those gales towards the northwest.
04:43Who Thursday evening and overnight, here's that trailing cold front.
04:47Now it will remain in place.
04:49It could just push down towards the Midlands for a time.
04:52Again, some rain associated with it.
04:54And across the far northwest of Scotland, that's where those winds will really pick up.
04:59So some strong winds.
05:01I'm going to say gales here, particularly along the coastline, over the northwest highlands.
05:05And some showery bursts of rain as well into Friday morning, making a game for some tricky conditions if you are travelling.
05:12For Northern Ireland, though, you'll miss most of that, particularly down towards Down as well as Newry.
05:18Northern England, southern Scotland are not doing too badly at all.
05:21So a real mix as we start Friday.
05:24So through Friday, we continue to see that feed of showers and blustery winds towards the north.
05:29Here's that front again, bringing with it some pulses of rain extending from the southwest southern parts of Wales.
05:36But in between, there will be some brighter weather.
05:39So the clouds will break.
05:40A few fleeting showers across central belt of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland.
05:44But still that rain down towards the southwest.
05:47Wherever you are, enjoy the next few days.
05:49Remember, it is going to turn milder, but there will be some rain around and some heavy rain over the next 24 hours, particularly towards the west.
05:56I'll see you later.
