00:00Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival,
00:07died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday at his home in Sundance, Utah. He was 89. His publicist,
00:14Cindy Berger of Rogers and Cowan PMK, confirmed his passing on September 16th, surrounded by
00:20loved ones in the mountains he cherished. Redford shot to stardom in 1969 as the outlaw
00:27Sundance Kid, opposite Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He later cemented
00:32his place in Hollywood with The Sting in 1973, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best
00:38Actor. After two decades in front of the camera, Redford transitioned to directing, winning an
00:44Oscar for his 1980 debut film Ordinary People. Redford received an honorary Oscar in 2002,
00:51with Barbra Streisand calling him the intellectual, the artist, the cowboy. The same year, the Sundance
00:58Film Festival, which he launched in 1985, had already grown into the world's premier showcase
01:04for independent cinema.
01:07I think probably the high points are ones where I was able to make a film that I was told I couldn't.
01:14All the President's Men was one, Candidate was one, Quiz Show was one, Ordinary People was
01:22one, River Runs Through It was one. So I think it's a kind of a collective. There are performances
01:30I'm pleased with, but I'd rather not get into that. But the films that I've made, I think
01:35probably the ones I look most favorably on are the ones that I was told would never get
01:41made, and by perseverance they did. Beyond film, Redford was a dedicated environmental
01:47activist, working tirelessly to preserve Utah's landscapes and natural resources. Born Charles
01:54Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, he was the son of an accountant.
02:02He had four children with his first wife, historian Lola Van Wagenen, one of whom died in infancy.
02:09In 2009, he married German artist Sibyl Sagars. For more than six decades, Robert Redford embodied
02:16the golden era of Hollywood while nurturing new generations of filmmakers, leaving behind
02:21a legacy as both a screen icon and a cultural pioneer.
02:39So, the wonder Susan E.
02:40for more than 19 years ago, Robert Redford, who was his father in her life who told Jesus
02:43to suffer full of him. She would be a good woman and a cultural painter and an instructional day
02:44of their dreams, living in the past. So we were a part of her family, and the
02:47former mother of his father in the past, and a cultural painter, a during the past, and
02:48for one a time we had loved her. So that was a really big one. So let's go in and
02:50another one. So let's go to that. So let's go into the two people. So let me give you a
02:52book. So let's go into the book and tell him the idea that
02:56we have this. We're going to be a little bit. So let's go into that, and we're going in. So I see that
