00:00Warriors up 4, 59 seconds to go. Shot clock down to 5. Pajemski's just holding it up top.
00:05Dribbles on Smith Jr. Spins, fade away 14-footer. Got it! He got it!
00:10Clutch shot by Pajemski, and the Rockets call a timeout.
00:1551.5 to go. What a shot by Brandon Pajemski.
00:19Dub Nation, this is Brandon Pajemski, coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
00:23You're listening to Steini and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:26All righty, let's welcome in Dan Dibley and Mark Willard from Splash.
00:32Jason to Chase Center, and it is the crossover.
00:36What's up, gentlemen? How you doing?
00:38Watch Party Willard and Dubs.
00:39Yeah, what's up, buddy? Yeah, let's go.
00:41Let us know what time you're coming so we can save you a spot.
00:45That's right.
00:45I'm leaving right after the crossover.
00:47Well, you guys did got four hours.
00:50Yeah, no, we got time.
00:51But if you want to come early, there's a lot of spots now.
00:55Oh, yeah.
00:55There's a lot of seats out here right now.
00:57We've got some Adirondack chairs that are set up in front of the giant video board right
01:02on a chase.
01:03You've got the amphitheater of seating.
01:05And by the way, out here at Splash itself, the food is unbelievable.
01:11And new menu items.
01:12And, man, I might go into a food coma mode because your boy's been eating now.
01:18Yeah.
01:19What's new?
01:20I had the Cod You Believe sandwich, which is brand new.
01:26Wait, Cod to believe?
01:27Not like there's the could you believe.
01:30This is the Cod You Believe.
01:32Okay.
01:33And it is a fried cod sandwich.
01:36I didn't make the menu.
01:37It's a fried cod sandwich with garlic fries.
01:40And I told him before my partner came, he said, do you want regular fries or garlic fries?
01:43And I said, let's go with the garlic fries to make sure that Willard can feel my impact
01:50for four hours.
01:51And he made the mistake of not finishing them.
01:53Yeah.
01:53So I ate the rest and now I can fight back.
01:55It's double halitosis out here at Thrive City.
01:59Yeah.
01:59So there you go.
01:59You guys got it going on.
02:00We're excited about tonight.
02:02Warriors in L.A.
02:03I'm nervous about NBC doing the first broadcast.
02:06I'll leave that alone.
02:08But the bottom line, Willard, is I have a text from you.
02:11We had a fun show.
02:12And we were just talking about batting around the lineups.
02:15And out of nowhere, I look at the TV.
02:17See, Kaminga, I'm like, that's a misprint.
02:20And then you text me, Goo, where you get it.
02:22But, I mean, it's one game, right?
02:24Moody's out.
02:25Nothing to see here.
02:25And I'm rooting for the dubs.
02:27And I'm rooting for Kaminga to put his best foot forward.
02:29Well, it's both.
02:30I don't think you need to throw a wet blanket on it.
02:33And, yeah, it doesn't say anything about the rest of the season.
02:36It doesn't say anything about Thursday.
02:39But it's not nothing.
02:40Right.
02:41I mean, they're playing in L.A.
02:42It's the opener.
02:44Yes, Moody is out.
02:46Or maybe it's about Luka.
02:48Or maybe it's just about tonight.
02:50Or maybe they love, you know, they love something that they saw in camp.
02:55I don't know.
02:55That sound you guys played from Steve Kerr, which was from a few weeks ago,
02:59I just love listening to it because I feel like we all just spent six months
03:05yelling at each other over something that's quite frankly the easiest thing
03:09to understand in the history of basketball.
03:12There's nothing nefarious here.
03:15He wants to do one thing.
03:16They want him to do a little bit of another thing.
03:19And let's see if those two sides can move closer together as the season starts.
03:24So you're not wrong for looking at that tonight.
03:26Let's look at that tonight.
03:29Yeah.
03:29I mean, I don't think there's any doubt about it.
03:32You know, and I look at it as though it's kind of low stakes.
03:36It's the first game of the year.
03:37They got a player over there, Donchich, who you may as well give Kaminga a shot at.
03:45And we'll see if it looks a little bit better this year in terms of the fit.
03:50But I do think that, you know, the issue that they still have with Kaminga
03:56when he's playing with Curry and Butler is, you know,
04:00how do they get him scoring more instead of just watching those other two guys?
04:08And I think that's where it comes down to Butler to try to be maybe more of a facilitator for Kaminga.
04:14Yeah, and that's fair, but I do think that when you look at the Kaminga minutes all year,
04:19as long as he's here, and it might be the whole year, it might not be as long,
04:23I do think that it's incumbent on everyone, especially Kaminga himself,
04:28to understand what the minutes are and what he can do in those minutes.
04:32So if he starts tonight and he's out there with Jimmy and Draymond and Steph,
04:37well, for six minutes or eight minutes or whatever it is, go out there and guard Luka.
04:41Like, guard Luka and do GP2 things or do Moses Moody things.
04:47And, you know, when you're on offense, go ahead and spot up in the corner.
04:50And if we get you a shot to take, then go ahead and take it.
04:53But meanwhile, go out there and guard the one guy that no one else can guard.
04:57So I do think that his minutes will be, your word, Stiney, nuanced.
05:01And if Kaminga can embrace the nuance of his minutes, because there's going to be games where Steph is going to be load managed
05:08or Jimmy's going to be load managed, and on those games, it's all about the ha-ha mark.
05:14And you love when I borrow from Guru on that.
05:16But every game, every stint for J.K. is going to be different, and it's up to him and them to figure out what that is.
05:24No, I'm with you there.
05:26And I'm wondering, yeah, no, I mean, in a perfect world, he comes out and starts with those guys tonight,
05:32and he runs the floor, and he rebounds and maybe even, you know, swings it here and there
05:38and then takes whatever's going on on offense.
05:40And if Butler comes out of the game or Steph comes out of the game, then he moves up in the offensive pecking order,
05:46and they're probably going to need him to score a little bit more.
05:49But you're right, Dibs.
05:50He's going to be the one to figure that out.
05:53And if he does, then there probably are enough minutes for him on this team.
05:57Well, I wonder what you guys think about this, too.
06:00Like, and we've probably not discussed this enough.
06:03I wonder, as tense as everything was through negotiations, that's now at least temporarily come to an end.
06:12That's over, right?
06:13Like, I don't know, what's going to be January, February, that'll take care of itself.
06:17He was given multiple offers.
06:19He chose the one he chose.
06:20But whatever player we were watching last year that was really trying to show out,
06:26in those moments, he's thinking restricted free agency is coming,
06:32and I need to put my best foot forward, and I want it to look a certain way.
06:37Well, at least for the moment.
06:39I mean, hell, it could be back in two months.
06:41But for now, that's gone.
06:43And so maybe the contract, maybe now making $23 million instead of whatever he was making last year,
06:51allows Jonathan to sort of meet the Warriors in the middle a little bit more.
06:55And maybe he is a little bit more open to, I'm just going to run the floor.
06:59I'm going to defend like crazy.
07:01I'm going to do the things that Steve is asking me to do.
07:04Maybe it's more of a comfortable thing for him now that he's not a free agent.
07:09I don't know.
07:10I'd love to see that tonight.
07:12No, I like that, and it's called life.
07:14And you talk about relationships, the ups and downs, and I love the word tense.
07:19I mean, it was that.
07:20And now that it's off, maybe that's just, you know, he can breathe a little bit.
07:24And I'm just saying, we don't know why, and we'll probably know before the game or after,
07:29because Steve's that dude.
07:30He'll tell us what went into Kaminga starting.
07:32But I do want to say this.
07:33I woke up this morning excited about the season, but the expectations, and I hate this
07:38because, you know, I love hard.
07:40The fact that the Warriors, Horford, Green, Jimmy, and Steph, and Dre, I said Dre twice,
07:50their ages, guys, has that paralyzed you for guys like me to dream that these guys can do
07:56something that's never been done in the association?
08:00Because to me, that adds to the fun, right?
08:02The 14 Giants wanted from the world as a wild card, and the 22 Warriors, who saw that coming?
08:10Right.
08:10I do think that there's two things here, Gu, and there's the dream on the left,
08:14and then there's the nightmare on the right.
08:16So if you want to look at the reality of the dream, the dream is everyone's healthy, they all fit,
08:23Kaminga's got the ha-ha and the skeet-skeet, and you win the whole damn thing.
08:27The nightmare is, oh, gosh, you are really old, and A, B, C, and D, they get hurt, and Kaminga doesn't fit,
08:35and oh, my God, it's a nightmare, and they go 30 and 52.
08:39So I think the reality falls between the dream and the nightmare.
08:44And so, honestly, if you look at which one is more likely, it's probably somewhere in between.
08:49And this is where, Stiney, I heard you guys earlier talking about Kaminga and whether or not he is integral or he's key.
08:56And the way I look at this year is all of those guys, they're all really key because Draymond and Steph and Jimmy and Al,
09:05they're probably going to play 65 games at best.
09:08And so, in those other games, Brandon and I love Will Richard.
09:15You know that, boss, man.
09:16He's eating a Cobb salad over here.
09:18All the young guys, they're going to have to step up and be good, good enough to win these games when the big boys are out.
09:25So, for me, it actually, this year is more about players 5 through 9 than it is 1 through 4.
09:32Yeah, I mean, I'll be honest with you, the thing that I want to see is I do want to see this team be relatively healthy
09:40because I actually think if they're healthy, they could obviously be pretty good.
09:46I do think there's a scenario in which they're relatively healthy, but they're not as good as we think.
09:54And the younger teams in the league have just maybe caught up to them a little bit over the course of a season,
10:00particularly if they have, I want to see if they can load manage these four guys
10:06and keep them in, you know, between, let's say, 62 and 66, 68 games
10:12and still finish in a place where they could challenge
10:16and it's not too deep into the play-in or the, you know, the seventh seed.
10:22Because I, like, I do think that's what bid them last year is the Butler getting here,
10:28them playing hard, then a tough first-round series, and I just think it caught up a little.
10:33Let me ask you guys this.
10:35What does that mean for you when you say, can the Warriors have a healthy season?
10:41Like, define that.
10:43To me, it would be the four older guys all play between, all play, like, 64 or more games,
10:50something like that.
10:51Yeah.
10:51Yeah, like, I don't find that to be that much of a stretch.
10:55I mean, what we're really asking for them to do, A, is not have, like, major season-ending injuries, number one.
11:04And number two, the other thing that I see with this team as opposed to last year
11:09is if they do have those nagging-type injuries that maybe take you out for three weeks
11:14or something like that, are they a deeper team that can hold the fort down
11:20and win basketball games, do like the Niners are doing right now,
11:24be five and two with major injuries going on.
11:27Now, some of those are the season-ending variety.
11:29That's another story.
11:30But, like, can this team, if Steph or Jimmy, if they miss three or four weeks,
11:36can they keep it together?
11:38Can they be a 500 club during that time?
11:40I don't know, but I think they're better equipped to do it this year than they were last year.
11:44You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ-FM, and HD1 San Francisco on Odyssey Sports Station,
11:50always live on the free Odyssey app and now broadcasting live from the Laughing Monk Studios in San Francisco.
11:57Yeah, I mean, it's going to be fun.
12:01A lot to keep an eye on.
12:04It starts tonight.
12:05NBC, Dibs.
12:07And I love that, and the Noah Eagle was fantastic,
12:10and I can't wait to hear the old John Tesh theme coming out.
12:14It will take a little bit of an adjustment,
12:16but, guys, I'm thinking about the 2014 San Antonio Spurs that won the title,
12:20and they had a 37-year-old Tim Duncan,
12:23and I know these other guys were younger,
12:26Parker 31, Boris Diao 31,
12:29Ginobili 36,
12:30but that was an old team that won it,
12:32and when you look at what they did,
12:33no player on that team averaged 30 minutes or more,
12:38and they had depth.
12:39They had Marco Bellinelli,
12:41shout out the Warriors,
12:4325 minutes a game.
12:44Danny Green, a younger player,
12:4624 minutes a game.
12:47You had Tiago Splitter.
12:49I loved him at the time.
12:5122 minutes a game.
12:53Patty Mills, 19 minutes.
12:54So that team was able to load manage,
12:57and they were one of the original load management teams,
12:59and they did it through games missed,
13:01but also minutes not played,
13:03and they were able to do it
13:05because they had a really good second team,
13:07and their third team quietly was not terrible either.
13:10So if the Warriors are going to do something special,
13:14it's going to take players 6 through 12,
13:17you know, Guy Santos and Quentin Post and all the rest,
13:20to be able to step up and be, at the very least, decent.
13:23It probably takes one of them, though,
13:25to maybe step into a role that we haven't fully imagined
13:30for him yet, too.
13:31Like, in other words, go back to 2022.
13:34They have a healthy year.
13:35Their guys play well.
13:37But if Jordan Poole doesn't do what he did,
13:39they're not winning the title that year.
13:41Wiggins, too.
13:41If Wiggins doesn't do what he does in the playoffs,
13:44that's not going to happen.
13:45So, and yes, Kaminga is a candidate
13:48to be that guy this year.
13:51So is DeAnthony Melton.
13:53Again, I'm not talking about stardom.
13:55I'm just talking about elevated roles
13:57from what we've seen from them before.
14:01So I do think that.
14:02I think that those are the two sort of things for success.
14:05No major, major injuries for these guys.
14:09And then who's the guy?
14:10Who's the guy that just goes one step up on the staircase
14:14and he's a little bit more of a factor
14:17than right now we think he is?
14:18Yeah.
14:18And you know my answer to that, Will.
14:20I'm hoping it's Kaminga.
14:21But I asked DeAnthony this and I'll ask you too
14:24because we're being positive.
14:25But with that, I'm looking at the West
14:27and all this athleticism
14:29because there's dudes out there that are gifted
14:31that could score the ball.
14:33But he asked me my biggest fear of this team right now,
14:35a question mark,
14:36and that was point of attack defense.
14:38How would you two answer that,
14:40your biggest question mark about this team
14:42starting this campaign?
14:43It would be that for me.
14:45I mean, because right now,
14:47you're going to start Kaminga tonight in theory
14:49because you have no one to guard Luka.
14:52And like Steph can't do it.
14:54And Jimmy, I think, kind of could.
14:57Draymond could do it.
14:58But you don't want to wear Draymond out in game number one.
15:01And Al Horford can't.
15:03Pods can't.
15:04So as you go down the roster,
15:06like Moses Moody could, and he's hurt.
15:08So when you look at somebody who can actually defend
15:11the best player on the other team,
15:13well, now you might need Kaminga.
15:15And is Kaminga going to be sold out
15:18to go out there for six or eight minutes
15:20and, hey, JK, you may not be able to cook
15:23in this opening session,
15:25but we need you to go out there and defend
15:27and rebound and do all the other things.
15:29If he can be that guy,
15:31well, now you might have action.
15:32I just don't see it as an individual conversation.
15:35I think that's how a lot of us tend to look at it.
15:37We look at players and we go,
15:39okay, who can defend this guy?
15:42Who can defend that guy?
15:43It's a team thing.
15:45It's just like the quarterback conversation
15:47that we all have now with regard to a system.
15:51And can they run the system?
15:53Draymond Green is the leader of the system.
15:55This is a smart team.
15:56And yes, they have people that they can rotate in
15:59who are plus defenders.
16:02Moody and Melton and hopefully Jonathan Kaminga
16:06and GP2, are any of them great on their own?
16:09I don't know that it really matters.
16:11Draymond is, even though he's not what he once was.
16:14But can they effectively run that rotation
16:17and be a good defensive team?
16:20I am still mindful of that Pat Spencer quote
16:24that came out two weeks ago
16:26that sort of got swept under the NFL rug
16:28and we didn't make a lot about it.
16:30But just to kind of paraphrase it for people,
16:34he made a comment that a lot of teams
16:37and a lot of fans in the NBA
16:38fall in love with length and athleticism
16:41amongst individual players.
16:43And those are the teams that tend to be
16:45in the lottery every year.
16:47That's not what decides championships.
16:49Even Oklahoma City.
16:50They didn't win because of length and athleticism.
16:53They won because of depth
16:55and a rotation that a lot of people bought into
16:59and played their roles really, really well.
17:03And that's at the center
17:04of not just the Kaminga conversation,
17:07but all these guys.
17:08The game tonight will not be about
17:10Luka and who guards him.
17:12It's going to be about how the Warriors
17:14rotate and guard the Lakers.
17:16Yeah, and Dibs, I'm looking at that Spurs team
17:19that you brought up from 14.
17:21And, you know, the only way you can do that
17:25is if you're kind of committed to it all year long.
17:29Right.
17:29And that's one thing, you know,
17:31I get people say, you know, Curry's minutes.
17:35Well, Curry averaged a little over 32 minutes a game
17:38last year.
17:40You know, will they bring him down to 30 this year?
17:43You know, will they bring him down to 28?
17:45But if they do, is it something that they're willing to do
17:48kind of all year in order to preserve him?
17:51Because the thing I'm also looking at with that team is
17:53they didn't suffer any big boy injuries
17:56because all their big guys played a lot.
17:59Parker played 68, Duncan 74, Kawhi 66,
18:03Bell and Ellie 80, DL 79.
18:05So if everybody can stay relatively healthy,
18:09then they can load manage to a better degree,
18:12like in-game also.
18:15Yeah, and that was the, I think the original
18:16load management team or franchise
18:19was Popovich in San Antonio.
18:21And if you look even deeper, like,
18:23Corey Joseph played 68 games.
18:25Now, 14 minutes a game,
18:27there were games where he played more,
18:28there were games he played less,
18:29but it was very much like a 15-man rotation
18:33over the course of a six-month season.
18:36So, like, Patty Mills played 81 games,
18:3919 minutes a game.
18:40So he was always there.
18:41So I look at this team, and you talk about,
18:44you know, Will Richard, I've already given him
18:46too much air time over the course of
18:47the last couple of months, but you get to, like,
18:50to give.
18:51I like him, Dibbs.
18:52I love him.
18:52Why do you guys like him so much?
18:54Because he's a grown man.
18:56He played four years at Florida.
18:58He won championships, and in the biggest moments
19:01in the NCAA tournament, he rose above.
19:04He led the team in scoring.
19:05Okay, but it's back to him.
19:06And he plays with effort, Willard.
19:08Effort, man.
19:09Undeniable effort.
19:10Defense, yeah.
19:11Sure, sure, sure, sure.
19:12No, but I mean, like, to plan on something
19:14from Will Richard this year, like,
19:17I'm planning on him being, like...
19:19If you get a loan manager, Willard,
19:19I told Stiney everybody has a chance
19:21on a given night to get in.
19:23Yeah, everybody got a chance, but I'm like,
19:25I'm not going to, like, circle Will Richard
19:26for, like, why the Warriors are going to...
19:28I didn't say draft him in fantasy, Will.
19:30No, but, I mean, to Stiney's point about...
19:32Play his first NBA game before we start
19:34penciling him in for a big role.
19:36But as you look at the Spurs construct,
19:38they relied on 12, if not 15 different people
19:42to, at times, step up and be something.
19:45And I do think that as the Warriors look at
19:47this year with an older core
19:49and a younger group of guys
19:51who might be able to pop
19:53and then another four or five guys below that,
19:55if you really want to have a great year,
19:57you're going to have to get minutes
19:58and contributions from 13 or 14 guys.
20:01That's all I'm saying.
20:02I agree.
20:02Yeah, I'm looking forward to it, fellas.
20:05And you guys will be out there Thursday
20:07for the home opener, too.
20:09Oh, yeah.
20:09Hell, yeah.
20:10We're never going to do a crossover together again.
20:13Ever.
20:14No.
20:14Season is here, and we're going to be out here
20:17all the damn time.
20:18Let's go, baby.
20:18Let's go.
20:19All the time.
20:21Kidding me?
20:22Cod sandwich?
20:23Yeah.
20:24All the time.
20:25I like my cod as part of just the simple fish and chips.
20:29I like fish and chips.
20:31I mean, I'm sure you could get the staff out here,
20:35Stiney, to kind of concoct something for you
20:38that's not on the menu if you want.
20:40You go bunless, Stiney.
20:41Yeah.
20:41You probably have that kind of action.
20:45Yeah, I like vinegar on that
20:49and even some ketchup,
20:50but I don't like tartar sauce or mayonnaise.
20:52I think you liking vinegar shocks no one.
20:56Oh, God.
20:57And he got the vinegar face on fish and chips.
21:01Nobody.
21:02You got to love it.
21:04Okay.
21:04And that comment got the jacket to go on the first show.
21:08Willard talking about how, like,
21:11I had him at minus 800 for liking vinegar,
21:14and you mentioned that,
21:16and the jacket is on the shoulders.
21:18That is just so predictable.
21:19Hey, Will, before we go,
21:20you came up in a conversation before the show, Willard.
21:23Uh-oh.
21:24We got to do something about this 0-7 record in fantasy.
21:26Hey, man.
21:27If I could give you a win, I'd give you a win.
21:29No, no, no, no.
21:30No, now we're leaning into it.
21:33I'm going to see if we can do it again, Goo.
21:35I want 0-14.
21:38Okay, look at it.
21:39And I want it the same way birds want food
21:42in the 10th inning at Oracle Park.
21:45I want 0-14.
21:48Literally nothing has gone my way.
21:51No decision has been right.
21:53Every week I play someone who balls out.
21:56Whatever.
21:56Let's do this.
21:58I want to see if y'all can help me get to the finish line
22:00and make a memorable season out of this, Goo.
22:04Let's go.
22:05And, Goo, I split my picks last night.
22:07I was just about starting.
22:08I was ready to get out.
22:09I said, I got to ask Diz.
22:101-1.
22:11Yeah, I split the picks.
22:12I had Tampa, which was a loss.
22:14I had Seattle, which is a win.
22:1621-10, Goo.
22:17Look at it.
22:1821 and – I'm sorry, 21-9.
22:20No, 21-10.
22:21Okay.
22:22You were 20-9.
22:23Yeah.
22:23All right.
22:23I got you.
22:24Don't worry.
22:2521-10.
22:26Damn near 70%.
22:27Sounds like you're 3-8 over the last 11, though.
22:30Goo, here's the question.
22:32Yeah, there he is.
22:32Because the whole damn station's talking about your ridiculous trade offers
22:36that you send them every day.
22:38Why aren't you?
22:39You need to send more to me.
22:41Me, too.
22:41I'm the team that's selling at the deadline.
22:43I'm a steal from my partner, Will.
22:45I licked at your team.
22:46Oh, don't you do that.
22:48You tried to steal HN from me two weeks ago,
22:52and at that time I was 0-5, and the math was still there, Goo.
22:57Yeah.
22:57But not anymore.
22:59But Shasky, what type of dude says, hey, I wanted Jordan Mason.
23:04He's okay fumbling, but he ain't Earl Campbell.
23:07Shasky goes, well, I want Justin Jefferson.
23:11I'm hanging the phone up, dude.
23:12I'm not giving that up to get Jordan Mason.
23:15But anyway, I'm 3-4.
23:17All right, I'm 4-3, and these guys are at Splash,
23:20and the Warriors opener is tonight in L.A.
23:23Don't go anywhere.
23:25Do not go anywhere.
23:27Willard and Dibs from Splash.
23:29And it's all happening right here on 95.7 The Game.
23:31All right.
23:34Welcome.
