00:00I'm not sure what all of these holes that I have just uncovered are.
00:05Jordan bought a house that was wrecked.
00:07It was a quick flip.
00:08You know that when you bought it?
00:10I didn't know how quick of a flip it was.
00:12The whole thing is plastic.
00:13That's so dangerous.
00:15This is the first time that I've felt at home in my adult life
00:18and just want this to reflect that.
00:22What I'm most concerned about is what's hiding beneath the surface.
00:26Oh no.
00:28Mold.
00:28With you being a professional athlete,
00:30that could have taken away the things that you feel so privileged to have.
00:34Yeah.
00:35I don't know about you, but I'm pissed.
00:38Oh my gosh.
00:41Oh!
00:42Between social media, how-to videos, and baseless tutorials,
00:46inspired DIYers are taking on bigger and bigger projects,
00:50leaving their homes in complete chaos.
00:53What have you done?
00:55There's a big hole in the wall.
00:56The flood made it.
00:57This was a DIY gone wrong.
00:59What have we started?
01:00This is sketchy.
01:01You step in the wrong spot.
01:03You're going through.
01:05Yeah.
01:07For years, I've helped families in Southern California
01:10restore order to their dream homes.
01:12Oh!
01:13We're done!
01:14Now I've moved my family to Park City, Utah, where I'm rebuilding my business, and I know it's not going to be easy.
01:21New town, new business, new wrecks.
01:24You don't think about tomorrow, and you're working on your best self now.
01:33It is spring, and it is gorgeous.
01:37Look at these trees!
01:38La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
01:41This is the Mill Creek area of Salt Lake.
01:43It's about 20 minutes from everything, so this is the spot.
01:47And I'm going to see Jordan.
01:49This is her first house, so she's a new homeowner, and literally since the day she bought it, it's been nothing but a headache.
01:55I am a professional volleyball player.
02:00I've been living abroad for my entire adult life playing professional volleyball.
02:05And we have a new domestic league here in the States.
02:09And one of the teams is here in Salt Lake City.
02:12She's a two-time Olympian.
02:14She's on the national team.
02:16She's got a lot going on.
02:17The last thing she needs to be worrying about is her house.
02:20After the Paris Olympics, I felt very driven to just full send into something.
02:26This house had been listed for an hour.
02:28I had a flight out.
02:30From there, it was a very fast process of purchasing this house.
02:34I love the layout, the space.
02:36I love the neighborhood.
02:38This house is the first time in my adult life I felt a sense of home.
02:43But the month after I bought this house, some of the facets that I didn't know to look for
02:48started to reveal themselves.
02:49So the first time I turned this on, this whole thing bowed out.
02:53These were peeling back.
02:54Even the adhesive starts to smell like fumes.
02:58I was panicking a little bit, thinking, what the heck did I find?
03:02I definitely had some naive rose-colored glasses on.
03:06This really exciting, amazing thing, which is purchasing a home, became less exciting and
03:12a little more anxiety-inducing.
03:14This is just like peel and stick.
03:16Everything that I start to try to fix is uncovering more problems.
03:23You know, your mind starts to go, what else did I overlook?
03:27Because of these projects, it is not allowing me to completely feel like this is my home.
03:34Oh, I'm going to leave this.
03:36I'm going to leave it.
03:38Unfortunately, Jordan bought a house that was wrecked.
03:41It didn't look wrecked, but it was.
03:43And now, her efforts, they're making it worse.
03:48Hi!
03:48Hi!
03:49I'm Jasmine.
03:50I'm Jordan.
03:51Welcome!
03:51Thanks for coming.
03:52This is a really nice house.
03:53When I bought the house, originally, it was the same thought that I had.
03:57I was just like, oh, this is great.
03:58It's perfect.
03:59And then rose-colored glasses kind of came off.
04:01And, uh...
04:02So you've had the house for five months?
04:04Yes.
04:05This house was listed online for an hour.
04:07Put an offer in that night.
04:09So fast.
04:10Bang, bang, bang, bang.
04:12So when you bought the house, it was renovated?
04:15It was a quick flip, correct.
04:16A quick flip.
04:17Did you know that when you bought it?
04:18I didn't know how quick of a flip it was.
04:20Okay.
04:21Like, for example, these two-by-fours that are just nailed to the roof.
04:25I like how you can just touch it.
04:26Like, this one right here.
04:28So when you saw this, you're like, oh, cool beams.
04:31Yeah, from the aesthetic part, a lot of this house is the vibe that I'm looking for.
04:37But some of the small details feel a little bit like lipstick on a pig in a way.
04:42For example, this fireplace.
04:44Okay, so what's up with the fireplace?
04:46It looks brand new.
04:47It is.
04:48However, I don't know much about installing.
04:51Shouldn't move that much.
04:53This is just peel and stick stone.
04:54Peel and stick.
04:55Oh, boy.
04:56It looks like it's not sticking.
04:57And, yeah, I don't know how heat-proof her.
05:00This is melanin.
05:01This is peel and stick.
05:02And then this plastic down here.
05:05Even though this is a fixed front, you still have to have non-combustible around this.
05:10Otherwise, it could cause a fire.
05:13Okay, let's try to turn it on.
05:14We don't need to leave it on for a long time, but I want to see what happens.
05:17It's kind of scary how hot it gets.
05:22You just have to know that the material around it can withstand that heat.
05:25Right.
05:26But, I mean, this is already, look at this, yeah.
05:29So you're probably breathing in all the toxins of that glue.
05:32Which is why it doesn't stay on.
05:33Oh, my gosh.
05:36It just doesn't feel like it's done right at all.
05:39Like, we should probably turn it off.
05:41Let's do that.
05:42I feel tricked.
05:43Like, when you're paying for a new home, it's frustrating.
05:47You were tricked, and that never feels good.
05:50But my parents, they had wished that they had flown out and been able to see the home because
05:56there were a lot of things that they were concerned about.
06:00That just looks like drywall.
06:02I don't think that's right.
06:05Bad flips happen.
06:06They happen all the time.
06:08An untrained eye thinks everything's great.
06:10You buy the house.
06:12It's unfortunate.
06:12What did you do to your kitchen?
06:15I mean, it's supposed to be like that.
06:18Oh, so this is the same peel and stick.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Okay.
06:21When I peeled this back, these holes were just there.
06:24Really?
06:25This big one was smaller, but I, through some more investigation, broke it open a little bit bigger.
06:32The holes already being there is such an indicator of a quick flip.
06:35Yeah.
06:36The proper thing to do is to patch the drywall, and then you put the backsplash over it.
06:41That's just done wrong.
06:41All somebody has to do is, like, push against that backsplash, and they're going to get right to that wire.
06:47Whoever did this work, they did not care.
06:49They cut corners.
06:51The craftsmanship was shoddy.
06:52This is somebody who was trying to intentionally trick the next buyer.
06:59Wait a minute.
07:00This backsplash, this is plastic again.
07:04It looks like marble, and my concern is that it's right above your cooktop here.
07:09So if you're here cooking, this is going to melt and could cause a fire.
07:14Well, to be honest, up until you just pointed it out, I don't think that I knew that.
07:18That's so dangerous.
07:19The material needs to be non-combustible.
07:21I think the discomfort now is setting in even more.
07:26Yeah, I don't know that I'll be using the stove for the near future.
07:31How would you describe, like, your design style?
07:35Organic.
07:36Um, a lot of neutrals.
07:38Is your furniture and your art, is that a good indicator of your design style?
07:42I would say so.
07:43What if the house matched your furniture?
07:46Yes, that would be ideal.
07:48Cool.
07:49Okay.
07:49Let's go look at the bathroom.
07:52Watch your step.
07:53There's lots of levels here in this house.
07:55Mm-hmm.
07:55Another quirk.
07:56But, uh, this is my primary bathroom.
07:59Okay.
08:00A lot of natural light.
08:01Space is great.
08:02What's the problem in here?
08:04Well, I saw your eyes glancing at this.
08:05Yeah, what's going on?
08:07My bedroom, this bathroom, were all additions at some point.
08:11And so, there is a window that connects this bathroom to the guest bathroom.
08:21So, I have to believe that this was the original window on the outside of the house.
08:26Here, you stay here.
08:27Oh, that's really awkward.
08:33It could be.
08:34When I've had guests, I'm conscientious that I'm not using my bathroom when anyone is using this bathroom.
08:42Yeah.
08:42This shower is small.
08:48Like, I could reline the shower at some point.
08:52Or, ideally, just have a bigger shower.
08:55Do you fit under the shower head?
08:57Barely.
08:58And with...
08:59Yeah.
09:00It's...
09:01It's a small shower.
09:02It's small.
09:03It's small.
09:03It feels like at every turn, whoever did this renovation had a chance to, like, do it right.
09:12And they didn't.
09:13Feeling the compounding of a lot of these little things at moments have felt really heavy.
09:20Now, I go through, depending on the day, just different waves of emotions.
09:24Some days, I'm really proud and empowered.
09:27Other days, I'm like, what the hell did you do?
09:30So, finally, being able to plant roots somewhere, this is the first time that I felt at home in my adult life, is here.
09:38And just want this to reflect that.
09:42It feels like the house needs to, like, catch up.
09:44It needs to live up to what you thought it was.
09:47Right now, it's not meeting those expectations.
09:50Yes.
09:51What we're talking about right now is a full renovation.
09:53Yeah.
09:54To a house you just bought that was already renovated.
09:57It's a lot.
09:58Yeah.
09:58It's a lot.
09:59What is your budget that you have to put towards this project?
10:02Probably $175,000.
10:05I don't want to overpromise understanding that there's definitely things in this house that are going to catch a Spice Prize, for sure.
10:11Yeah.
10:12I don't have any medals.
10:14But this is where I shine.
10:17I feel for Jordan.
10:18She doesn't have anywhere to go.
10:21She doesn't have a next step.
10:23She doesn't know what to do with this house.
10:24We need to get this house working for her again and hopefully make her feel like it's the house she dreamed of.
10:31I have to fangirl for a minute.
10:33Do you have Olympic medals?
10:36I do.
10:36Can I see them?
10:37Are they here?
10:38You can absolutely see them.
10:39You can wear them if you want.
10:40Oh my gosh, they're heavy.
10:42They're heavy.
10:43Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024.
10:46So cool.
10:48If you ever want to borrow them, let me know.
10:49All right.
10:51I have a contractor that I'm working with here.
10:53Sweet.
10:53So let me call him.
10:54And as soon as we get everything out of here, we'll get started.
10:58Amazing.
10:58Yeah?
10:59See you soon.
11:00Bye.
11:02I feel a sense of wanting to prove in a way that I didn't buy a piece of crap and that this was a good investment.
11:09Hi, Dad.
11:11Hey, Jordan.
11:11What's up?
11:12Hi.
11:13Hey.
11:14I was wondering if you might want to do another project together.
11:16Another one?
11:17I think she's going to do it.
11:18She's going to take it on.
11:19That's awesome.
11:20Sometimes it works out well.
11:22Sometimes you learn hard lessons along the way.
11:24She's in way over her head.
11:25This house is, it's confusing.
11:27Hopefully she doesn't uncover anything else that we don't know about.
11:32I'm getting ready to take off out of town, but I can have Jeff come over and meet you.
11:37That it'll be in good hands is reassuring.
11:39Jeff and I can definitely get started, and when you come back, we'll keep it going.
11:43I'm really hopeful and optimistic.
11:45This house can become something that I really love for a really long time.
11:56I've recently gone back to work from maternity leave.
11:58And while on maternity leave, we moved to a new state.
12:02Really?
12:03So now figuring out how to put all the pieces back together.
12:06I've got my team that I'm trying to build for work.
12:09Luckily now, I work with Matt.
12:11He's on my short list.
12:13Working on Matt's house was a great way to kind of take our relationship to the next level,
12:19if you will.
12:19Come on, Matt.
12:20Let's go.
12:21Let's do it.
12:21Let's do it.
12:22I understand that Matt can't be everywhere at once, so I'm glad that he's delegating.
12:27Oh, hi.
12:28Jeff is one of Matt's most senior foremen.
12:31I briefly worked with him on Matt's project, so I'm excited to get to know him a little bit better.
12:36You ready for this?
12:36Yeah.
12:37Yeah, let's do it.
12:38Let's get started in the bathroom then.
12:39Okay.
12:40So, this bathroom.
12:42What I'm most concerned about is what's hiding beneath the surface.
12:47Yeah.
12:47It's not a bad-looking bathroom, but that doesn't mean they did it right.
12:51It's true.
12:52I think we should start on this brick wall right here.
12:55See this bow?
12:56It's like over an inch.
12:57So, I don't know what's behind there, but I think we should find out first.
13:00That's where we should start.
13:01Okay.
13:01Let's do it.
13:02Whoever did this flip, they didn't care about the materials.
13:05They didn't care about the functionality.
13:07They just wanted it to look a certain way, and some of these finishes, they're not the
13:11most aesthetically pleasing.
13:13That's fine, right?
13:14But the things that are unsafe, that's where you have to draw the line.
13:19Oh, no.
13:20Shoot.
13:21That might explain that hump.
13:26This is literally the first thing that we've opened up on this house, and there's black
13:31mold just pouring out of the walls.
13:33Let me go find some masks.
13:36I wonder if this was part of that porch area.
13:40To do a quick fix, they painted over it.
13:43So, this has been here for a long time.
13:45There's no way Jordan knew that there was mold back here.
13:47Yeah.
13:48She's in here every single day trying to stay healthy, take care of her body, so she can
13:53be in the top competitive shape, and here she is breathing in black mold, and she doesn't
13:56even know it.
13:57It's scary.
13:58This just makes me wonder what else we're going to find.
14:00Black mold is no joke.
14:03No, it's not.
14:04Not good.
14:05Mold can lead to respiratory issues, lethargy.
14:08It can lead to all different types of health issues.
14:10So, mold is never something you want to find in somebody's house.
14:14Look at that.
14:15There's a junction box covered up.
14:17Are those live wires in there that aren't capped or covered?
14:19Yeah, it looks like.
14:20Let's check it.
14:21Yep, they are live.
14:22No wire nut, no nothing.
14:25That's so dangerous.
14:27Those wires touch anything?
14:28That'll spark.
14:29And could cause a fire.
14:30Wow.
14:31I don't know about you, but I'm pissed.
14:33Yeah.
14:35I don't ever anticipate finding this many things that are wrong with the house this early
14:40on.
14:41I'm nervous, because if this pace continues, the money that we've set aside for this project,
14:46the money that Jordan didn't want to spend in the first place, it's going to run out really
14:50fast.
14:51So, here's what I'm thinking in this bathroom.
14:52We should start by getting rid of the window into the other bathroom.
14:55Okay.
14:55So, we close that up.
14:57No more black mold and new flooring throughout.
15:00This area over here becomes the toilet room.
15:02We'll do a pocket door, and we'll even do a built-in linen storage in this new little room.
15:07And over here, we'll do a complete new vanity with a fluted detail on the front.
15:12We'll do new mirrors, new sconces.
15:15This corner is unused real estate, and I think it should become a beautiful new shower.
15:21We'll put in a new window, do new tile on all the walls, then even a bench inside of
15:25the shower.
15:26Awesome.
15:26I'm really concerned about the fireplace.
15:30I think we need to go start exploring in there, and hopefully we don't find anything like this.
15:35So, when it turned on, this thing got so hot.
15:39All of this peel and stick just started basically falling off because it would get really gummy
15:44and hot.
15:45So, I'm interested to see what's going on in here.
15:47I feel like, oh.
15:48Oh.
15:49Stop it.
15:50This isn't even connected.
15:52It's just set on top.
15:53Literally.
15:54What is that?
15:54Just a piece of cement board that's not connected?
15:57Yeah.
15:57That's not how fire protection works.
16:00Nope.
16:01The extent of the safety issues on this, the list is long.
16:06Yeah.
16:06The whole thing is fake.
16:08I feel like this is going to come right out.
16:10This fireplace is beyond anything I've ever seen.
16:17At any moment, this could go up in flames.
16:21This should not be this easy to take out a fireplace.
16:24This says this is a 72-inch wood shelf.
16:28That's what they built the sides out of.
16:29That's what the whole fireplace was sitting on top of.
16:32It's not anchored.
16:33Ridiculous.
16:34Wow.
16:34Not safe at all.
16:36Luckily, we're here to make it right.
16:37Into the trash.
16:40The design for this house is mountain modern.
16:44We're going to work with what's already here, which is a mid-century bungalow.
16:48And we're going to lean into these organic tones and textures, which Jordan likes.
16:54I feel like the bones of this house actually aren't bad.
16:56It's just what these flippers did to it that made it so unsafe.
16:59I think the functionality of this kitchen can be completely reworked by switching where the range and the sink work.
17:06So we'll flip them.
17:08Along this wall, we'll do a brand new cabinetry.
17:10We'll do quartz countertop that'll run all the way up as the backsplash as well.
17:15The new sink will be on a peninsula's cabinetry, which will waterfall all the way down to the sides and extend out for seating.
17:21Jordan will be able to actually entertain in this kitchen and not have to worry about it being safe.
17:25And in this living room, we're going to keep the floors throughout.
17:29They're in great shape.
17:31We'll create a really cozy living room area by adding new faux beams.
17:35And I want to do a new fireplace that's safe, but that has a really beautiful design as well.
17:42I think that this living room is going to be the living room she thought she was buying versus what she actually got.
17:48Love it.
17:50Getting rid of the mold in Jordan's bathroom is absolutely necessary.
17:56Luckily, in this case, it was just on this one wall.
17:58So we were able to remediate by putting in new framing, new drywall, basically knew anything that had mold on it.
18:05Fortunately, it's a wall that we were already planning to reframe because we had to cover the window.
18:10So it was already in the budget.
18:15I need some time with Jordan to go over design decisions.
18:19She's actually leaving Utah for training.
18:21So I'm going to go to where she is and hopefully catch a little bit of time with her before she goes out of town.
18:27Hi.
18:28Hi.
18:28Hey.
18:29I knew I would find you here.
18:31Yeah, it's been a minute.
18:32I know.
18:33Good to see you.
18:34This is cool.
18:34Yeah, welcome to our gym.
18:36Makes you want to play volleyball being in here, though, right?
18:38Have you played before?
18:40I mean, I played in high school.
18:43It's been a long time.
18:44We can change that.
18:45Oh, my gosh.
18:46Yeah, I'm sure.
18:48Okay, so I wanted to chat with you about kind of where we're at with your house and some of the stuff we found.
18:55Okay.
18:55There were a lot of things that we kind of knew going into it as far as, like, the fireplace.
19:00It was going to be something sketchy.
19:02Even worse than that was your bathroom.
19:04In the wall, as you walk down those stairs into the bathroom, there's blackout.
19:10A lot.
19:11My brain goes to how much time you've spent in that bathroom, especially with you being a professional athlete.
19:19That house and that mold could have taken away the things that you feel so privileged to have.
19:25Yes.
19:26That's very scary.
19:27Yeah.
19:28I know you mentioned that you bought the house pretty fast.
19:30I did.
19:31I think I wanted to rush it because we were starting our season.
19:34This is why people just take a little bit more time with the inspection.
19:38Yeah.
19:39I think you're a really confident person.
19:41But there are things that are going to come up in life where that confidence only gets you so far.
19:47And I feel like some of those things are great learning opportunities.
19:51Oh, absolutely.
19:53Being a homeowner has been very humbling in a lot of ways.
19:55It's cool to have people such as Jasmine give me that guidance because it's that kind of mentorship that I feel like I've gotten my whole life.
20:04And I really value it.
20:06Okay, so I have some really fun stuff here for cabinets.
20:10This one has a little scratch on it, but this is a more neutral painted cabinet.
20:14Can I already tell you off the bat?
20:15This is a no for me.
20:16Why?
20:17I feel like this was the exact color of my cabinets every year I lived overseas.
20:24Oh.
20:24It made the space feel really like blah.
20:28Yeah.
20:28So this is going to be a no.
20:30Fair enough.
20:31I feel like this color green is kind of in right now, but I don't know with my dark floors how that would contrast.
20:36Yeah, your floors are more this color, right?
20:38Yeah.
20:38I think this would be my preferred.
20:41Okay.
20:41This is a white oak.
20:42Yep.
20:43It's got that lighter finish on it.
20:44Yeah.
20:45And so you can see how that would kind of look with your floors.
20:48Yeah, I like it.
20:48All right.
20:49This has been hugely helpful for me, so thank you.
20:53Thanks for meeting me here.
20:54You played a little volleyball.
21:00For the rest of this project, Jordan's going to be out of town.
21:03So she's going to California.
21:05She's on the national team.
21:06She's training with them.
21:07And that means that the next time I see her, this project's going to be done.
21:16Hi.
21:17Oh, hey, Jasmine.
21:18Welcome back.
21:19I'd like to say it's good to be back.
21:21We missed you.
21:22I'm sure you did.
21:25Is this what I think it is?
21:27It sure is.
21:28Yes.
21:28Cabinet.
21:29Woo!
21:29For Jordan's kitchen, I wanted to take a real different approach than what was here before so that Jordan kind of forgets this chapter of the house and she can move forward.
21:40I love just the modern, clean, flat panel, like, kitchen because that's the next step for this house.
21:47And that's what Jordan needed.
21:48I'm excited for her.
21:49It's going to look great.
21:50My mom is calling me.
21:55Your mom's calling you?
21:56She's with Darla.
21:58Hi.
21:59Is everything okay?
22:00Well, actually, Darla's been a little bit fussier than usual today.
22:06I was just wondering if there was any chance you could come home a little early.
22:13You have to stay here.
22:15You go ahead.
22:16Aw, sorry.
22:17I know that's not easy for you either.
22:18Parenting a five-year-old and a six-month-old means that I have no regular schedule.
22:25But having my family life so up in the air and my work life at the same time, everything's kind of changing and moving.
22:31It's a lot.
22:33I have a few more things to do here, and I will head right home.
22:37Okay.
22:37I know she's going to love to see your mama.
22:40All right.
22:41Thanks, Mom.
22:42You need to go?
22:44I'm being pulled in a million directions, always.
22:46But the main one is to go home and be with her, but I also have responsibilities.
22:52She's just so little.
22:54We're on the hunt for some, like, consistent child care.
22:57Yeah.
22:58Do you want me to do it?
22:58Yeah.
22:59That's what I was doing.
23:00That's what I was doing, yeah.
23:01I got a big school bag.
23:02She's small, right?
23:03We just got done with practice, and we're asking Jordan about our new house.
23:14What's your biggest concern?
23:15I'm curious if they found any more things behind, like, the walls.
23:18They found black mold in my bathroom.
23:21So they're also saving your life.
23:22They are, yes.
23:23Okay.
23:23Oh, yeah.
23:29Windows gone.
23:30No window.
23:30No window.
23:31Look at the shower, right?
23:33That shower's awesome.
23:34This whole space, there were so many things that we had to fix in here.
23:39It's taken a lot of work to get to this point, but it looks good.
23:43Speaking of looking good.
23:44Okay.
23:45Tile.
23:45Tile in here is going to be huge.
23:47So two by two in the shower.
23:48That's going to be cute.
23:49This is, like, a real neutral, pretty handcrafted look, horizontal stacked on the walls of the
23:54shower.
23:55Okay.
23:55And then this is that 12 by 24 for the floors, large format.
23:59It's going to look good.
24:00The stairs, this is what we need to talk about right here.
24:05It's a terrible transition.
24:07Look at the layers here.
24:08You've got original subfloor, you had a second subdeck, and then you have carpet.
24:12Maybe the best thing that we do is we come in, we cut this step down so that we can then
24:16get a good surface.
24:18And I think we bring one of those full tiles over.
24:21So put that there.
24:22Cut this down.
24:23So that's kind of where the bathroom starts.
24:24Yep.
24:25I think that's the best idea.
24:26Okay.
24:27I literally cannot wait to see this.
24:32Jordan thought that she bought a house that had these, like, beautiful architectural beams.
24:36So my goal is to add this detail back in.
24:40So today, Jared is here to help with these beams.
24:43Hey, Jasmine.
24:44I think originally we accounted for about seven beams.
24:47It feels like that might be a little too heavy for this room.
24:53So I just wanted to get your opinion.
24:56If you could give me a call, let me know.
24:58That would be great.
24:58I think she might have a wet diaper.
25:00Oh.
25:00Would you mind changing her?
25:01No, no, no.
25:02Or maybe giving her a bottle?
25:03I'm just going to figure this out for my carpenter real quick.
25:05The job site is going, whether I'm there or not.
25:09There's always questions that come up, but I can't always be on the job site.
25:13So it's a constant struggle to keep everything moving.
25:18And each project, I mean, there's literally a million decisions.
25:21It's constant.
25:22Like, now we're going to build actual beams that feel substantial.
25:27Maybe we don't need so many.
25:28I don't want it to feel super busy.
25:31Hi, Jared.
25:32I think that five beams is perfect, period.
25:35I'll send you a photo, period.
25:38My mom is super involved with the girls.
25:41She was Hazel's nanny when Hazel was little, which was amazing.
25:44She got to spend an exorbitant amount of time with Hazel.
25:46And now with Darla, it's been really special to have her so involved.
25:50It was a big decision for my mom to move to Utah.
25:53But I think what she thought about at the end of the day, she was like,
25:56the grandkids are moving.
25:58I'm going.
25:59Well, I'm feeling really good and settled in here in Utah now.
26:04So I'm thinking I'm probably going to get a job.
26:11OK.
26:12So I'm not going to be as available.
26:15Oh, my gosh.
26:22It looks so good.
26:28I know we've been calling on you a lot.
26:31It's tough, right?
26:32Because like in California, we have the village of people.
26:35Versus here, we have you.
26:38I mean, obviously, Brett and I are so appreciative of all the help.
26:41And I finally feel like she's big enough.
26:44Gets a while.
26:45She gets.
26:48She has a lot to say about it.
26:59Bob is Jordan's dad.
27:01He lives in Colorado.
27:02And I invited him here today because he would have been the one to actually try to fix this
27:07house if I wasn't here.
27:08And I don't know if that was realistic.
27:10It's giving us a run for our money.
27:11And we're professionals.
27:12So this house, we're making some progress.
27:15Yeah.
27:15Did you get to see the house before she bought it?
27:18No.
27:18She was renting a house here.
27:20And then all of a sudden, we just get the news, hey, I'm buying a house.
27:24It was scary.
27:25You know, if something bad happens, we're not down the road to be able to get here and
27:30help her with anything.
27:31Some of the things that, you know, the fireplace, that thing scared me.
27:35Yeah.
27:36It has been scary.
27:37This house was not safe.
27:39Yeah.
27:40I'm so happy that we're getting it done the right way now.
27:44Well, we're trying.
27:44Wow.
27:48Everything that's done so far, this is amazing.
27:51I'm excited that we're at this stage.
27:53This fireplace is now, like, built in.
27:56And then on the wall.
27:58So this is a pretty, right?
27:59Marble.
28:00That'll go all the way around.
28:03Wait, where's the stick on?
28:05Exactly.
28:07Let's get started on these beams.
28:08Sounds good.
28:11Are you comfortable with woodworking?
28:13So long as I have pros around my head.
28:16These little pieces will act as our cleats.
28:19And then we'll build a faux beam around them.
28:24When did you know that volleyball was the thing for Jordan?
28:28I was coaching volleyball.
28:31I used to take her to practice.
28:33And she was one.
28:34And she was just sitting in her stroller.
28:38And her intensity that she had watching the ball, she was like, all the girls on the team were like, she's going to be a volleyball player.
28:45Oh, my gosh.
28:46So you knew when she was one year old.
28:48When I first met Jordan, the thing that was immediately evident was how independent she is.
28:54Yeah, she's always been that way.
28:56She likes to be in control of things.
28:59You know, buying this house was such an accomplishment.
29:03And it was something that she was really excited about.
29:05I think it overwhelmed her.
29:07And it made her feel like, oh, for the first time, maybe I didn't make the right choice.
29:13Right.
29:14And I think when we came in and showed the negative side of things, it didn't go off very well.
29:21Well, and you know how it is.
29:23You don't want to hear it from your parents.
29:24But I think she did what she had to do.
29:27I'm glad she did.
29:28And I'm glad you guys are here.
29:30And it's been one crazy ride, that's for sure.
29:33I'm sure.
29:37This fireplace, it's coming along.
29:39So we framed it.
29:40We've drywalled it.
29:41And the next step is to pick out a firebox.
29:45Today is one of those days where the whole team is here.
29:50This is pretty.
29:51Too stovey to me.
29:53Too stovey?
29:54Okay, that's fair.
29:56The fireplace she had before was a dangerous mess.
29:58And she needs to have a fireplace that she doesn't have to worry about.
30:02We're going to go with something that I think has a linear flame and something that feels a little bit more mid-century.
30:08Arcade, do you want to push Darla?
30:10Sure.
30:10Sure, you give her a push.
30:11My helpers here, they're being great.
30:13But I always say I'm on borrowed time.
30:15So find a fireplace, get back in the car before anybody falls apart.
30:20Right?
30:21Yeah.
30:23That's a picture of a fireplace.
30:25That is a picture of a fireplace.
30:27This is nice.
30:28A bit too big.
30:30I don't know.
30:31I think we have enough space maybe for that one.
30:34I'm out of here.
30:34The countertops in this house are quartz.
30:36You get the look of natural stone and it's easier on the wall.
30:44This is a waterfall countertop.
30:46So that means it goes all the way to the floor.
30:48It feels modern.
30:49It feels intentional.
30:50And it's certainly different than what was here before.
30:53Oh, hi, Deb.
30:54Hi.
30:55Do you have five minutes?
30:57Deb works with Matt.
30:58She's trying to keep this schedule tight.
31:00She's making sure the trades show up.
31:01She's like my right-hand person on this project.
31:03So, Stine.
31:05Oh.
31:06We got to figure out what we're going to do for these beams and the woodwork.
31:10Obviously, we're not changing the floor color.
31:12Right.
31:12So the challenge is, do we do the post and all the ceiling beams and even this mantle the
31:19color of the floor or the color of the cabinets?
31:23Jordan bought this house knowing that she wanted, like, a modern mountain home.
31:28Yeah.
31:29When things are really light, they start to read beachy to me.
31:32Yes.
31:32And when they're darker, automatically, it makes your mind go more towards the mountains.
31:38So if we do all that darker color, I think that'll look really nice.
31:42I'm right there with you.
31:43I think that's the right decision.
31:48I'm currently in Rio for our first tournament of the summer with the national team.
31:52Could not feel more of a move from my house.
31:55The reveal is a week from tomorrow.
31:57So I'm so eager to get home and see what Jasmine and the team have done.
32:06Hey.
32:07What's going on?
32:08Oh, it looks so good in here.
32:12Don't you love that fireplace?
32:14Okay, so appliances tomorrow.
32:15We've got electrical.
32:16We've got plumbing today.
32:17Tile guys are here.
32:18Oh, yeah.
32:19Let me go check in on the bathroom.
32:20It's looking so good.
32:21Y'all?
32:23Woo!
32:24Hi, Kevin.
32:25Good morning, Jasmine.
32:27This looks so good.
32:28The functionality of the space is going to be so much better.
32:31Agreed.
32:32But is the tile done?
32:35Not yet.
32:36It's getting close, though.
32:38Holy buckets, it's taking a long time.
32:43It looks gorgeous, but why is it taking so long?
32:46Those exterior walls were so out of square.
32:48Okay.
32:49That we've had to redo things a handful of times to try to square this up.
32:52I mean, there's a lot to do in a short time that we're plowing through.
32:56I appreciate it.
32:57As much as I love the new vanity, the hardware being in this brushed nickel, it ain't doing
33:09it for me.
33:10So, I'm going to paint it.
33:14Because this house is so wonky, to get the lines of the tile and the shower straight, they're
33:21having to cut each piece individually, and that's a lot of work.
33:25The tough thing is that I have a very specific deadline to measure for my shower glass.
33:31I don't want to show Jordan her new bathroom and be like, oh, but by the way, the shower
33:34glass isn't done.
33:35She gave me one day that she's going to leave practice and come back and see her house and
33:41hopefully get that peace of mind that she's been looking for.
33:45I appreciate that Matt and his team want to do it right.
33:47I do.
33:48And I don't want to rush anybody, but I didn't expect to take this long.
33:51In order to get this project done in the time frame that we've set, it's all hands on deck.
34:04Oh, it feels so finished in here.
34:07Do you like this?
34:08Nailed it.
34:09And the window treatments that make such a difference, and we got the doors.
34:12Amazing.
34:13Let's put them up so that they don't get damaged.
34:15There you got it.
34:17Yeah.
34:17It's in.
34:21Yeah.
34:22Here, here, here.
34:24Try not to spill it.
34:26Oh, good job.
34:27You got it.
34:28Before I had kids, I'd see people post videos or pictures of their kids all messy, and I'm
34:33like, I don't understand.
34:35And now I have kids, and I'm like, oh, my goodness, it's the cutest thing ever.
34:38Like, get messier.
34:41So silly.
34:41So we've been interviewing people for some extra child care support, and it looks like
34:51our favorite person just accepted a job with us.
34:57That's great news.
34:59Hazel, we're getting some help.
35:00If something's too good to be true, chances are it probably is.
35:14Jordan got caught up.
35:15She didn't take the time to go through and find out if it was really a great house or
35:21just looked like a great house.
35:24And that was something that I don't think she was ready to deal with.
35:28But as soon as she realized it, she did the right thing, and she asked for help.
35:34Jordan told me she's learned a lot from this experience.
35:36And today, she gets to come home, and all of the bad that this house has brought into
35:43her life is gone.
35:45And she can just focus on what she really wanted from the beginning, which was to have
35:48a house that she really loves.
35:50Oh!
35:51Hi!
35:52Welcome home!
35:52Thank you!
35:53It's good to be home.
35:55This is exciting.
35:57I feel like almost before a match, like when you're like a little bit of nerves, a little
36:00bit of excitement, a lot of unknown.
36:03I know you didn't intend to have this renovation.
36:06Nobody thinks, oh, I'm going to buy this freshly renovated house, and six months later, I'm
36:10going to have to take a loan out to do another renovation.
36:13Definitely not, but I am really happy that this is where it's landed.
36:18The good news is, is as far as the budget goes, we actually came in under budget.
36:23Oh, that's amazing to hear.
36:24Right?
36:24Yes.
36:25And we did everything.
36:27I think that this was, I know, a big step for you to become a homeowner.
36:32Even though we've uncovered a lot of issues with it, there's still a lot of love for this
36:39house, and I'm just, I'm excited.
36:43Do you want to go inside?
36:45Yes, please.
36:46Yeah?
36:46Yes, please.
36:47Okay, come on.
36:48Let's sprint through the door.
36:49Yeah, don't knock me over.
36:50I'm here, my aunt.
36:51Oh, my gosh.
37:02It looks so good.
37:11Oh, my.
37:13Let's take in, right?
37:14I'm at a loss for words, truly.
37:20I just want to, like, start running around.
37:22You can run around.
37:23Yeah.
37:25This is amazing.
37:30Sorry, I picked my jaw up off the ground.
37:34It looks so good.
37:36It looks so good.
37:37What are you thinking?
37:42I just feel, like, a lot of, I don't know, I feel a lot.
37:47Um, I feel a lot of joy.
37:50I feel gratitude.
37:52It just, I don't know, this is my, like, my space, my home.
37:56And I would just, thank you.
38:00You're so welcome.
38:03I'm so glad that you love it.
38:05I do.
38:05I really do.
38:08Yay!
38:10I love the tone that you chose.
38:12Even the little bit of, like, texture that's mixed in, it looks really nice in the space.
38:18This living room before, the beams were stained two-by-fours.
38:22They're not meant to be really seen.
38:24These beams are now made of white oak.
38:27You can see all the grain.
38:28Yeah.
38:29This is amazing.
38:31It immediately changes the entire energy.
38:35When we took this fireplace apart, well, first of all, what do you think?
38:41I want to touch it.
38:42Oh, my gosh, it's not hollow.
38:44It's not hollow.
38:45We replaced the entire fireplace.
38:48And now this is not only to code, but beautiful.
38:53This is a fluted marble.
38:55The white oak mantle matches your floors.
38:58Yeah.
38:58Matches your beams.
38:58Yeah.
38:59New firebox.
39:00And.
39:03Oh, brand new.
39:04Brand new.
39:05There it goes.
39:09This is going to be so great.
39:11All I wanted to do, truly, in the winter before practice was make a cup of coffee and sit.
39:17Yeah.
39:17Yeah, now I can do that.
39:19This is a real fireplace now.
39:23What about this kitchen?
39:26It looks so good.
39:27By flipping the functionality of this kitchen and changing the layout, we're able to make it feel a lot bigger.
39:34Now you have, like, a proper place where you can cook.
39:38Yeah.
39:38The backsplash is not plastic.
39:40You have, you know, brand new cabinetry.
39:43This is great.
39:44It's a cabinet that you will use that I would never use.
39:48The sink is now in the peninsula countertop.
39:52The countertop waterfalls all the way to the ground.
39:54Wow, that's fancy.
39:57Right?
39:58Oh, cool.
39:58Right?
39:59So you went from, like, sketchy electrical to, like, new age electrical.
40:02Yes.
40:03Let's go look at the back.
40:04Okay.
40:07Oh.
40:08This is so cool.
40:10Right?
40:10This is so cool.
40:13I don't even know where to start.
40:15I mean, this is so much.
40:17We've worked in a lot of earth tones and wood tones and mixed metals.
40:22So good, right?
40:24I love it.
40:25I love it.
40:26We've reclaimed the far corner to make a massive shower.
40:31Right?
40:32The biggest shower.
40:33I'm going to live in the shower.
40:35Oh, my gosh.
40:36There's so much room to wash my hair.
40:38Like this, I'll, like, run home for practice to look for a towering in this.
40:42Oh, this makes me so happy.
40:44I don't know if you remember, there was a window here.
40:49Of course.
40:50Of course I remember.
40:51So now you have that privacy.
40:53Yes.
40:54This is the wall where we opened it up and found the black mold.
40:58Yeah.
40:58And the minute we saw that, we remediated it.
41:00Having that peace of mind to know that you're not being exposed to that every day, I mean, that's huge.
41:05Yeah, thank you for taking care of it.
41:08This has been an opportunity, even for me, to learn how things can look like everything's okay and really not be okay.
41:19There have been multiple consequences of homeownership that I hadn't thought to consider when I was buying a house.
41:29Jasmine really gave me a different perspective on a lot of things.
41:34I got to meet your dad.
41:37You did?
41:38Yeah.
41:38Your dad was excited to come and help in any way he could.
41:43And your parents love this house because you love this house, right?
41:46And they were concerned about you.
41:49I don't know.
41:50I feel like both of them...
41:52Oh, I'm going to be talking about my parents.
41:54Both of my parents have given me all of the tools to be able to succeed and be fortunate enough to afford to buy a house and to have had this done.
42:11And then, it's just, I love them so much and, yeah, they just want to see me happy.
42:21And thank you.
42:22You're so welcome.
42:23I think there's been a sense of longing for my adult life to find a place that felt like home.
42:33So, to purchase a home is like my stake in the ground a little bit.
42:39Oh, wow.
42:40This is great.
42:42This is a big reflection, I think, of my adult life moving forward.
42:45It's quite a load off my mind.
42:48It makes me feel good that you're in a very safe place now.
42:51Hi!
42:54I will look forward to being able to come home to this house.
43:00And I feel very lucky for that.
