Much of Australia is preparing for the summer disaster season, with the threat of both bushfires and heavy floods in some parts of the country. but in south-east Queensland, some residents say nothing could have prepared them for revised flood mapping that places them in the path of risk, and could cause their insurance bills to sky-rocket

00:06She's never seen floodwaters reach this high on her property,
00:10yet the council has flagged it all as a high flood risk.
00:14I'm just really lost for words.
00:16This is something we never thought we'd be dealing with in our lifetime here anyway.
00:20Dreading the impact on her insurance premiums, she began shopping around.
00:25It's ridiculous. We're retirees.

00:30Who can afford to pay $10,500 every single year for insurance?
00:33I think that's predatory pricing and they don't explain why it's happening.
00:36They just try to blame the flood model and move on.
00:39Logan City Council says their adjusted map plans for a significant flood event,
00:44which has just a 0.05% chance of occurring.
00:47That's triggered a wave of pushback from locals,
00:50but the mayor says it is necessary to meet state government requirements.
00:54I think in an ideal world where insurance companies fairly priced risk,
00:58it wouldn't be a problem.
00:59The Insurance Council of Australia says each insurer uses its own data
01:03beyond local council flood maps to calculate premiums.
01:07Logan residents have until the end of the month to challenge the proposed changes
01:11and highlight what the impacts will be on their insurance costs.
01:15But elsewhere in the South East, revised flood maps have already been finalised.
