20:22I don't know what you're doing. Don't worry, Dad.
20:25I'm not worried.
20:27I rode a bike when I met Colin's mum.
20:30Sold it when the twins came along.
20:33Bought a very expensive pram.
20:36I suppose you two need to worry about that.
20:43Douglas Hodge and Leslie Sharp there as the parents
20:46and Harry Melling as Colin.
20:49So, Colin and Ray, tell us about...
20:52It's all sorts of things, but there is a romance at the heart of it.
20:56Yeah, it's sort of a love story.
20:59It's a sub-dom love story.
21:01Ray, my character, spots Colin in a crowded bar
21:05and decides that this could be a potential great sub for him.
21:09So they go out on a date.
21:12And then that's the beginning of something quite intense.
21:18Yes, and it is very intense and it's quite out there,
21:21but there's a kind of a sweetness to it as well.
21:23Well, in a way, it's a coming-of-age story for Harry's character, Colin,
21:29because it is his first relationship
21:32and he's figuring out what Ray wants out of this relationship.
21:35And then as we get into the movie, 30, 40 minutes into the movie,
21:40he starts to realise that, well, is this exactly what I want
21:42out of a relationship?
21:43And then he kind of has to come to terms with that and deal with that.
21:47So, yeah, it's a classic dom-com.
21:54But you're not gay, are you? You're not gay. Are you?
22:00No, not really, no.
22:03You do remember that day, 20 years ago?
22:10Not at all.
22:14It's just fascinating because, you know, I've been enthusiastically gay
22:19for a very long time.
22:21And I'm always surprised by fellas who come across it later.
22:30But you're having to act it.
22:35And how did you research it if you didn't know much about it?
22:38Because we all do research.
22:41I mean, these are all the questions I was going to ask, Alexander.
22:45I'm so sorry.
22:53A lot has been made about the sex in it.
22:56But it's interesting.
22:58It is really out there.
22:59But it is always kind of pivotal to the plot and the characters.
23:04Yeah, I mean, I find sex scenes are only uncomfortable
23:11if you don't understand why you're shooting the scene.
23:14If it feels gratuitous or if you're like, why am I walking around naked in this scene?
23:18It doesn't really serve the story or the narrative.
23:20It doesn't push it forward.
23:21And yes, there are some graphic scenes in the movie,
23:24but they're all kind of pivotal moments in the relationship
23:28and in Colin's journey.
23:31So I was quite excited about shooting them because, again,
23:34it's like they were key components to the narrative.
23:36You had a wrestling one, and I was like, you're going to murder him.
23:39I was like, have you wrestled before?
23:42And then we ended up making sweet love.
23:44You did make sweet love.
23:45I mean, it wasn't sweet love.
23:46Oh, yeah.
23:47Yeah.
23:48Sweet love.
23:49But like, yeah, I was like, you're going to kill him.
23:51That was the first time we met, actually.
23:52No.
23:53Yeah.
23:54We met two days before we started shooting,
23:56and we rehearsed that wrestling scene, Harry and I.
23:58Wow.
23:59And really got to know each other well.
24:01I would say so, yeah.
24:03Because, again, Harry's character is very inexperienced
24:07and has to learn from Ray in these scenes.
24:11So it wasn't supposed to be good.
24:13And it's confusing so many Harry's.
24:16But Harry Lighton, the writer, director,
24:18also wanted it to feel clumsy and had a thing which I love
24:22that, like, often sex scenes are, it's too kind of polished
24:26and the lighting is always perfect.
24:28And there's two, like, hands grabbing sheets, that kind of crap.
24:32Like, what was so great about this, like, he was like...
24:34He's not seeing Bridgerton.
24:39All right, keep going.
24:40Go ahead.
24:41Nicholas Sheet grabbing.
24:42Nicholas Sheet grabbing is second to none.
24:44Yeah.
24:45It's like the romanticized version of sex.
24:47And what was great about these scenes
24:50and what made me excited about it was, yes, they are hot
24:54and intense, but there's also room for awkwardness.
24:58And when people change positions, it can look clumsy and weird
25:03and it's kind of fun to leave that in rather than cut around it.
25:06So, like, everything is not a perfectly choreographed dance.
25:09And why do we think we... I think we all have an impression
25:12that Swedish people are unshockable, that they're very kind of bohemian,
25:15or have we just made that up?
25:17I think that is not quite true.
25:20I think it was, um...
25:23But you run around naked a lot, don't you?
25:25Well, my family, yes.
25:26But in general...
25:28I think it's from a movie called
25:29Joanniefing Gull from the 60s
25:31that was kind of made a big impact around the world
25:34because it was, like, sexually very liberating and, um,
25:37and Swedish.
25:38So that kind of...
25:39After that, people were like, oh, they're so liberated and free.
25:42So you are Swedish, are you?
25:44Um, yes.
25:45Can you do the accent for us?
25:47I'd like to hear that.
25:50I think he has been.
25:51Yeah.
25:52Anything for you, Miriam.
25:53Aww.
25:54It's a very sing song in Swedish.
25:56It is.
25:57Like...
25:58That was gibberish, but...
25:59Yeah.
26:00Yeah, there is a sort of music in it, like, you know.
26:06There is a sort of music in it.
26:08Yeah, music in it.
26:09And here's the thing, you're doing a press tour
26:11but you're not doing it by yourself because the...
26:13the real gay bikers club that feature in the film,
26:17uh, they've been travelling around with you, right?
26:20Yeah.
26:21They come to the show.
26:22Some of them are here.
26:23Gay bikers club?
26:24I think we can spot...
26:25There they are.
26:26Hello.
26:27Yay!
26:28Oh, that's amazing.
26:33Yeah.
26:34Hello, guys.
26:35Hi.
26:36Nice to meet you all.
26:37We've got a picture of them all on the red carpet.
26:41There they are at the London Film Festival.
26:43Lovely.
26:44Are you...
26:45Is that Matt?
26:46Is the pup...
26:47Oh, you...
26:48Are you the pup?
26:49Yeah.
26:50Honestly, it's like the show back in the Channel 4 days.
26:52We were on...
26:54I'm having flashbacks.
26:56And they've been biking around with you.
26:58They've been to various...
26:59That's not the only one.
27:00Yeah.
27:01A bunch of these guys came down to Cannes for the world premiere,
27:05which was pretty incredible.
27:07Wow.
27:08That was the first time I watched the movie with an audience,
27:10so to do that with Harry and Harry and the guys
27:16and the fact that they came down just meant the world to me.
27:19It was an incredible night.
27:21Well, it's a really special film.
27:23It's very hard to describe, but I really hope people see it
27:25because it's just terrific.
27:26Oh, thank you.
27:27You're great in it.
27:28It's Pillion and it's in cinemas now.
27:31Very good.
27:32Always a treat when Miriam Margulies puts pen to paper.
27:39And this is a goodie.
27:41It is called The Little Book of Miriam.
27:45It's out now.
27:47And this is your third book, I think.
27:49It is, yes.
27:50But you've sold almost one and a half million books, Miriam.
27:54Amazing.
27:55It is amazing.
27:56Congratulations.
27:57I feel quite humbled.
27:58How do you write it?
27:59On your computer?
28:00On my computer.
28:01Yeah.
28:02No, I never thought I was a writer.
28:05And some people agree with that.
28:08But I've been immensely lucky, actually.
28:11And honestly, being on this show helps to sell it.
28:16And that's...
28:17That's why he has...
28:18That's why she's here, ladies and gentlemen.
28:20I thought you were going to say he inspired you when it's all started.
28:27No.
28:28I would like to sell...
28:29It's a flogging opportunity.
28:30It is.
28:31It is.
28:32You are a writer also and your books are lovely.
28:38Oh, that's right.
28:39I really urge people to buy Graham's books and read them.
28:44Read them.
28:45People don't read enough.
28:46You're scrolling and scrolling.
28:48Read.
28:49Read a fucking book.
28:51Read this book.
28:52Yeah.
28:53And you tour the country with your books and you play these big theatres and this is night
29:01after night you do this.
29:02Do you enjoy it or is it kind of exhausting?
29:04Oh, I do.
29:05I mean, I think you would agree with that.
29:08You're an actress and you're an actress.
29:10It's wonderful to be in front of an audience.
29:13You know, I'm an old, tired lady.
29:16Well, I'm hardly a lady, really.
29:18But I love being in front of an audience.
29:23It gives me a buzz, a thrill.
29:25I get energy from it.
29:27I get joy from it.
29:28I really do.
29:29And I think most actors do.
29:31I don't like cameras.
29:33I'm not interested in them.
29:35But to be with a live audience, to get the response from them, and to feel that they're
29:40listening to me and sometimes quite liking what I'm doing, that is magical.
29:46The book is kind of an A to Z of your thoughts and your stories.
29:50Yes, it's alphabetical.
29:51And there's a story, and I know people ask you to tell this story a lot when you're doing
29:55your live shows.
29:56I think it was when you were on with Will.i.am and you told the story.
29:59And you know the one I'm talking about where you're going home in Edinburgh late at night.
30:03In Edinburgh.
30:04And there's a man up a tree.
30:06You assist him.
30:08But what you reveal in the book is there's more to this story.
30:12I know I didn't tell it on television because I felt nobody would believe me.
30:19But after I had helped and supported the troupe.
30:23There was a soldier up a tree.
30:24Oh, wanking.
30:25And Miriam helped.
30:26And I...
30:27He wasn't stuck.
30:28He was just up a tree.
30:29No.
30:30He was up a tree.
30:31I heard the rustles.
30:32I saw what was going on.
30:33I asked him to come down.
30:35I finished him off.
30:37Seriously.
30:38Very pleasantly.
30:39And there was no threats.
30:42I was wiping my hand in the grass.
30:45And a voice from the bushes.
30:51By the way, this is the new part of the story.
30:54When we left this story, you were wiping your hand on the grass.
30:57Yes.
30:58Now.
30:59I heard a voice come from the seat that was just where I'd been.
31:05And a very nicely dressed gentleman came forward and said,
31:11I couldn't help noticing what you had done for that young man.
31:18And I wondered if it was at all possible whether you would do the same for me.
31:25And, um, I said, uh, I thought to myself, well, I can't say no, can I?
31:33Because I've done it.
31:34Come on.
31:35Sorry about it, but you can say no.
31:37I just felt I couldn't.
31:39OK.
31:40That's the thing.
31:41I think you're going to love Pillian, by the way.
31:44This could be a scene from Pillian.
31:47So, I did what he asked me to do.
31:52Right there?
31:53Right there.
31:54There was nobody else there, you know.
31:56Oh.
31:57So, off he went.
31:58And I was wiping my hand in the grass.
32:01And lo and behold, this is the bit nobody believes, but it is true.
32:06A voice from the same place said, hey, Miriam.
32:12And it was someone I knew.
32:15He was a young student that I had known in Oxford.
32:19I went to Cambridge, but I met him in Oxford because I lived there.
32:23And he said, listen, we're old friends, you know.
32:28I said, oh, come on.
32:30LAUGHTER
32:32Yeah, it's fair.
32:34And he said, oh, come on, Miriam, you know.
32:36So, I did.
32:37LAUGHTER
32:39Three for the price of one.
32:41LAUGHTER
32:42Beautiful story.
32:43It's true.
32:44It is honestly true.
32:45Really?
32:46I'm surprised you're not still there, Miriam.
32:50Safety price.
32:51Yeah, it's true.
32:52Pow.
32:53Oh, my gosh.
32:54Now, Miriam, I feel, I feel, you know, because you tell these great stories we love having
33:04you on the show, but I feel that often it takes away from the fact that you are this great actor.
33:09So, I'm delighted to say that you are in a short film that's coming out in the new year.
33:16I am very good in this film.
33:18LAUGHTER
33:19It's called A Friend of Dorothy.
33:21But the real star is that young boy up there, Alastair Nchwaku.
33:27Yeah.
33:28He's wonderful.
33:29And my agent has taken him on.
33:32He's so good.
33:33So good.
33:34And so lovely.
33:36And he helped me to be good too, as did the writer and director, Lee Knight.
33:42It's just a wonderful film.
33:44So, I believe it's going to be on one of those streaming channels.
33:48It is.
33:49Very soon.
33:50Yes.
33:51I can't tell you which one because it's a secret.
33:52But I know it's the 1st of January.
33:54On the 1st of January.
33:55Yes.
33:56Rush to see it because it's really wonderful.
33:58It is.
33:59It's a very, very sweet film.
34:00And you're both so good in it.
34:02It's gorgeous.
34:03Absolutely gorgeous.
34:04We look forward to that.
34:05And don't forget The Little Book of Miriam.
34:06That is out now.
34:07OK.
34:08APPLAUSE
34:13Ms Nicola Coughlin is returning to the London stage in the Playboy of the Western World at
34:17the National Theatre from the 4th of December.
34:204th of December.
34:21Oh, that's next week.
34:22I know.
34:23How are you all set?
34:24You ready?
34:25Well, we did our first sort of run today in the room.
34:28It was our last day in the rehearsal room.
34:29And they said, you know, two or three people will be coming in.
34:32And there were sort of three rows on either side of the room.
34:34And I went, oh no.
34:35And it was terrifying.
34:36But like you said, very exciting to have an audience there to perform to.
34:39And yeah, it's very, very exciting.
34:41And obviously the Playboy of the Western World, classic play, James Sing.
34:44Yes.
34:45If people don't know, if it's somehow past and by, who are you in it?
34:48What's it about?
34:49So I play a young lady called Peggyn Mike.
34:51And it's set in the west of Ireland in 1907.
34:53And there was big riots when this play came out.
34:55Because they talked about women's shifts, so women's underwear in it.
34:59And people were like, no, Irish women, you know, they would never talk about underwear.
35:03We couldn't be so crazy.
35:04And then they tore up the theatre to prove how not badly behaved they were.
35:08So yeah, so she runs this pub in the country and everything's sort of going along a bit humdrum.
35:13And then a young, good-looking man walks in.
35:15And everyone sort of goes, well, who are you?
35:17Where did you come from?
35:18And they barrage of questions.
35:20And then he sort of says, leave me alone.
35:22I killed my father.
35:23And instead of being horrified, they'll go, that's amazing.
35:26That's really cool and exciting.
35:28And we all fancy you.
35:30Yeah.
35:31And you've reunited with Derry Girls co-star Siobhan.
35:34Yes.
35:35Have you ever been on stage with her before?
35:37I never have.
35:38But she is the Queen of Ireland.
35:39We sort of play love rivals for Christie, played by the lovely Anna Hardwick in the middle,
35:44which is great fun.
35:45Because my character, we did a show together called Derry Girls.
35:47And she was the...
35:48I know that.
35:49Oh, do you?
35:50Yes, I fucking do.
35:51Oh, sorry.
35:52She's brilliant.
35:53Oh my goodness, thanks very much.
35:55You're brilliant.
35:56All of you.
35:57Oh, thank you.
35:58Thank you very much.
35:59But my character in the show was very scared of her character.
36:02Because she was a nun, very scary nun.
36:03But in this, we're rivals.
36:04So we get to go toe to toe, which is great fun.
36:06And here's the thing.
36:07It's a return to live theatre for you.
36:09Yes, yeah.
36:10And so you'll be in front of a live audience and people are talking about how great that
36:13is.
36:14Yeah.
36:15But it's also quite...
36:16It can be quite intimidating because audiences have changed, I feel.
36:18Well, it's absolutely terrifying.
36:19I mean, I've done theatre before, a lot of direct to dress theatre where you're just
36:23speaking it out to the audience.
36:24And you have interesting things when that happens because people assume that you can't
36:27see them.
36:28And you really can sometimes.
36:29And I did a show once where I looked up in the audience and a man just took out a
36:33lunchbox and just started eating, like, a microwave shepherd's pie.
36:36And I was like, right, this doesn't make what I'm doing quite difficult.
36:39So please, if you come to the National, just, like, don't.
36:42Eat the shepherd's pie before or after.
36:44That would help, like, a lot.
36:45And the phones thing is...
36:47The phones thing.
36:48Oh, yeah.
36:49It illuminates your face.
36:50I stopped a show once.
36:51Yeah.
36:52Did you?
36:53Yes.
36:54I was doing Sunset Boulevard on Broadway.
36:55Yeah.
36:56And, you know, you prepare, prepare, and you make a great entrance.
36:58And it was like, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash, flash.
37:01And as you're doing this song, you're thinking, what am I going to do about this?
37:04What am I going to do about this?
37:05And I walked to the end of the stage and I said, we can either have a photo shoot or
37:08we can do the show.
37:10You decide.
37:11Yeah.
37:12Ooh.
37:19Alexander SkarsgĂĄrd, have you done any theatre?
37:22Yeah, in Sweden years ago.
37:24It was probably almost, well, 15, 20 years ago now.
37:27Wow.
37:28Since last I was on stage.
37:29No temptation to get back on the boards.
37:30It's a lot of work, my friend.
37:32It's a lot of work.
37:33So, no.
37:34I'm incredibly lazy.
37:35And you come from this big acting dynasty, the SkarsgĂĄrds, to your dad, Stellan.
37:41But then how many of your siblings are...
37:42But what's your father?
37:43Yeah.
37:44Oh, he is a good actor.
37:46Oh, he really is.
37:48Why are you laughing?
37:49My favourite SkarsgĂĄrd, yeah.
37:51I didn't mean that in a nasty way.
37:54No, no.
37:55I absolutely mean it.
37:56He's a wonderful actor.
37:57Wonderful actor.
37:58But I heard you were very jealous of your father being in Mamma Mia.
38:01Oh, God.
38:02I mean, who wouldn't be?
38:04I mean, look at that.
38:06It was, yeah, he was just obviously a big ABBA fan.
38:09But was that in the film of Mamma Mia?
38:11Yeah.
38:12Yes.
38:13Oh.
38:14What?
38:15It's a great movie.
38:16Have you not seen it?
38:17I did see it, yeah.
38:18You're not disappointed.
38:19You're not disappointed.
38:20I thought it was dreadful.
38:21I thought it was.
38:22Maybe it's not for my father's performance.
38:24No, no.
38:25I don't remember your father's performance.
38:30But it really wasn't to my taste.
38:33I think what I was jealous of was the experience.
38:42Because I remember, like, he was having the most fun he's ever had.
38:45I think they all did.
38:46All the people in it.
38:47And that's why, that's also kind of why I appreciated the movie so much.
38:52Because you can tell it was kind of infectious, like, how much fun they were all having.
38:55Yeah.
38:56And, like, my father is not a great singer, but he was just belting it out and laughing.
39:01And it just looked like it was a joyous experience.
39:07I'm glad he had a good time.
39:11Have some notes.
39:12I know.
39:13I hesitate to mention Nicola's new film.
39:16But no, you haven't seen this.
39:17Mamma Mia 3.
39:18No.
39:20No, Nicola, you've got it.
39:21This is such a posh, it's a kid's film, but it's a posh one.
39:24The Magic Faraway Tree.
39:26Yes.
39:27It's you.
39:28Who else?
39:29It's an amazing cast.
39:30Ridiculous cast.
39:31The Magic Farafield, Rebecca Ferguson, Jennifer Saunders, Michael Palin.
39:35Wow.
39:36It's honestly...
39:37Oh, wonderful.
39:38It was amazing.
39:39I mean, I read the script and had no idea who was involved with it, but I thought it was
39:42Simon Farnaby who wrote Paddington 2, which is one of the best movies ever in the world.
39:47Yeah.
39:48I was desperate to be involved and, yeah, it was just a joy.
39:51And it's a lot of people's favourite, you know, childhood book.
39:54I'd never read it, but I love meeting grown-ups.
39:57They're like, oh, my God.
39:58And I got to play a fairy.
39:59And I got lovely, lovely ears.
40:01Well, they've got a picture of you, have we?
40:03Oh, yeah.
40:04There you are!
40:05Good ears.
40:06Yeah, great ears.
40:07It was so much fun and there's three gorgeous kids who lead it and we got to lots of magical
40:12lands and it was just a joy.
40:14Oh, boy, I loved it so much.
40:15And when's that out?
40:16It's out in March.
40:17Oh, OK.
40:18Yes.
40:19Oh, OK.
40:20But the trailer's out very soon.
40:21They won't tell me when.
40:22But soon.
40:23Yeah.
40:24Well, just a quick reminder, you can see Nicola Coughlin in the Playboy of the Western
40:26World at the National from next Thursday.
40:29Good luck to you.
40:31Thank you very much.
40:33Right.
40:34It is time for music.
40:36This Brit award-winning artist sold over 20 million records worldwide.
40:40And now, after a seven-year break, she is back with a new album.
40:45Here performing the single H-A-P-P-Y, it's Jessie J!
40:49Woo!
40:51Woo!
41:00Oh, me, myself, and I.
41:02Ain't no place to hide.
41:04All I got is time.
41:06Oh, Iém screaming out a secret.
41:10Tell me that you keep it.
41:12Keep it, I don't wanna lie
41:15I can take it, try to fake it, my smile
41:23Oh, they believe it, ain't the meaning of life
41:31I'm gonna laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
41:36Cause I'm H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
41:40I laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
41:44Cause I'm H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
41:48Rainbows on the ceiling, serotonin heathen
41:53Renewing to my soul, colitis got me feeling
41:59Wide awake and drinking, but you already know
42:03Oh, I can take it, try to fake it
42:09My smile
42:11Oh, they believe it, ain't the meaning of life
42:19I laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
42:24Cause I'm H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
42:27I laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
42:32H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y, let's go
42:36I laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
42:41I'm H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
42:46I laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
42:51I'm gonna laugh till I cry, dance, I know why
42:56I'm H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
42:59I'm gonna dance, I'm gonna laugh, H-A-B-B-Y
43:05H-A-B-B-Y, H-A-B-B-Y
43:09H-A-B-Y, H-A-B-Y
43:14H-A-B-Y, H-A-B-Y
43:17Wow! Thank you.
43:20Whoo!
43:21Jessie J, everybody!
43:26And her band.
43:28That was gorgeous.
43:29Come on over and do.
43:32So good to see you.
43:34Thank you so much for that performance, it was fantastic.
43:39Just loved it.
43:40H-A-B-B-Y, that is off the latest album, Don't Tease Me With A Good Time, which is out today.
43:46Good to see you.
43:47Thank you so much for that performance, it was fantastic.
43:51Just loved it.
43:52H-A-B-B-Y, that is off the latest album, Don't Tease Me With A Good Time,
43:57which is out today.
43:58It is.
43:59It's in the world.
44:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
44:01It's out.
44:02Congratulations.
44:03Yeah.
44:05Hello.
44:06Because time does all these strange things, I had no idea.
44:09It's been seven years.
44:10It's been too long.
44:11It's very rude.
44:12Yeah.
44:13I'm so sorry to add on the price tag and then I just disappeared.
44:16No.
44:17It is.
44:18Life has happened.
44:19It's been seven years.
44:20It's been too long.
44:21It's very rude.
44:22Yeah.
44:23I'm so sorry to add on the price tag and then I just disappeared.
44:26It's just life just happens, doesn't it?
44:28And I suppose the big question is, you know, how are you feeling?
44:31Because I know you have been through a ringer with health things and all sorts.
44:34Yeah, this has been.
44:35This has been wild, yeah.
44:37So I'm good.
44:38I've just recovered from breast cancer.
44:40Wow!
44:41That's fabulous!
44:43Wow!
44:44Did you...
44:45I never know how to react to it.
44:47Yeah, I do everything with jokes, so sorry if I say things that feel a bit awkward,
44:51but yeah.
44:52I'm just...
44:53Yeah.
44:54No, it's good.
44:55I've got one really hard boob and an album out.
44:58You know?
44:59You could ask for anything more.
45:01Exactly.
45:02I'm just...
45:03I'm just happy to be here, honestly.
45:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
45:05I'm really happy to have you.
45:06And what has it been like kind of getting up in front of audiences again and doing performances
45:09again?
45:10Honestly, everywhere I've been, it's like...
45:14It's like I've been de-iced and I've come out of the Natural History Museum.
45:17And there's people like, you haven't been around for years.
45:20And I'm like, I'm back.
45:22And I'm like, I'm back.
45:24I don't feel any different, to be honest.
45:26And since we last saw you, you've done this thing which I feel like not enough people know about.
45:31Oh, no.
45:32What happened?
45:33So, no, you went to China.
45:34I did?
45:35You went to China.
45:36Yeah, they know about it.
45:37They know about it.
45:38He was there.
45:39You went to China and you did this show called Singer.
45:42Yes.
45:43And so it's a talent show.
45:44Yes.
45:45But it's a talent show on a scale you've never heard of.
45:49So how many people...
45:51It's actually in a...
45:52So I went, my manager...
45:54I was writing my last album 100 years ago.
45:57And they were like, this TV show want to have you on?
46:00And I was like, just say yes.
46:02And they're like, do you want to know the details?
46:04And I was like, no.
46:06Just, I need a shake up.
46:07Just say yes.
46:08So I fly over to China thinking I'm a guest on a TV show.
46:11No, no.
46:12I'm a contestant.
46:13No.
46:14And I'm competing against other Chinese artists that are massive
46:18and fully established, like do stadiums.
46:21And it's 500 million viewers a week.
46:23No.
46:24Yeah.
46:25The final, I did 13 weeks, 13 episodes.
46:27It was the most amazing experience of my life.
46:29It was a reality TV show.
46:31I had to sing in Mandarin.
46:32Please don't look that up.
46:34And the final was 1.2 billion people.
46:38What?
46:39Isn't that incredible?
46:40It's insane.
46:41So I mean, me and China, I like, I go back all the time.
46:44You were a contestant?
46:45Yes.
46:46Did you win?
46:47I did.
46:48Wow.
46:49I was so scared.
46:54I sang I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston.
46:57And people have asked me to sing that song a lot, like growing up.
46:59And I was like, no, I only want to do it and I feel like it's the right moment.
47:03And I just felt, I don't know why I chose to do it in front of 1.2 billion people live.
47:07But in a dress where I look literally like a sparkly penguin, I could not walk.
47:10And I was just like, walk into the mic.
47:12But it was life changing.
47:14It was the most amazing experience, yeah.
47:16Wow.
47:17Congratulations.
47:18And people can see you on tour here.
47:20Yes.
47:21Is it next April that starts?
47:22Next April.
47:23I'm going on tour all the time.
47:24I'm just singing anywhere.
47:25I'll be singing at a lot of places.
47:28Yeah.
47:29I'll come over to your house.
47:30I'll sing.
47:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
47:32No, literally.
47:33Listen, it's so great to see you.
47:35Thank you for that amazing performance.
47:36And good luck with the tour and the album.
47:37Thank you so much.
47:38Jessie J, everybody.
47:39Congratulations.
47:40Thank you, my love.
47:42That is nearly it.
47:45But before we go, just time for a quick visit to the big red chair.
47:48Who have we got?
47:49Hello.
47:50Hi.
47:51Hi.
47:52I have high hopes for you.
47:53There's a spark in your eye.
47:54What's your name?
47:55Alison.
47:56Alison.
47:57Devon.
47:58Devon.
47:59Lovely.
48:00And what do you do in Devon, Alison?
48:01I'm a partnership development manager for a financial services network business.
48:04I almost said that.
48:07OK, off you go.
48:08Off you go with the story, Alison.
48:09Back in the 70s, growing up as a child with a strict mother, we were always taught not to leave any food on our plate.
48:16And it was Christmas Day, Christmas dinner, and as usual, you would have sprouts on your Christmas dinner, which I hate.
48:23So everyone had left the dining room table, and I was left with my plate, which had just had the sprouts left on there.
48:30We had a Jack Russell terrier called Timmy at the time, and I thought, well, it would be quite nice.
48:35No one's going to see.
48:36I can put the plate on the floor and the dog will eat the sprouts and I'll get away with it.
48:39I put the plate on the floor, the dog licked the gravy off the sprouts, but left the sprouts.
48:45But unfortunately, I couldn't admit to the fact that I tried to get the dog to eat the sprouts, so I still had to eat the sprouts for this time.
48:55You can walk, Alison, I like that story.
48:59Very good.
49:00OK, that really is all we've got time for.
49:02If you like that, go ahead and tell yourself and tell your story and contact us via our website at this very address.
