01:32Daughter, Wild Rose, and Wicked Little Letters. Now, she brings us the beautiful and heartbreaking

06:28We'll start with our first big movie tonight.
06:30Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in Anaconda.
06:33It opens in cinemas on Boxing Day.

06:51It's kind of amazing that no one's done this before an Anaconda reboot.
06:55How did this come about?
06:56How involved were either of you?
06:58Well, there was...
06:59The director of this movie made a movie before this called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
07:05Which was with Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal.
07:07And both Jack and I were huge fans of that movie.
07:10And when this script kind of showed up, it seemed to have similar DNA to that one.
07:16In that it was just kind of a clever meta comedy, a take on a reboot.
07:21So, I think I kind of worked on it a little bit with them, developing it.
07:25I was interested in doing it.
07:28I was very excited that they would want to work with me.
07:30And then I heard that Jack was maybe going to be involved.
07:33And then it was just the most exciting day.
07:36And then we got on the phone and talked about it.
07:38And it's basically, it's two friends kind of coming together later in life.
07:43Yeah.
07:44Yeah.
07:45Four friends.
07:46Four, you're right.
07:47Steve Zahn and Tandway Newton.
07:49And yeah, we're these four dumbbells who love each other and had great experiences in high school making little dumb films.
07:56And we shared a love of the original Anaconda.
07:59And we decided to go remake this movie out in the jungle.
08:02And then we get swept up in an actual Anaconda nightmare.
08:06But it's really funny and crazy.
08:09I never read anything like it.
08:11And I was mainly excited to work with this guy right here.
08:14Because he makes me laugh so hard until I cry.
08:16And I thought, this is it.
08:18And I told my manager, I was like, I'll do it as long as Paul Rudd is, in fact, attached.
08:24Because sometimes they'll pull a fast one.
08:26They'll pull a switcheroo.
08:27Tennessee switcheroo.
08:28Yeah, no.
08:29Paul Rudd's in it.
08:30They'll sign the thing.
08:31And then they say, oh, Paul couldn't do it.
08:32He had to do it.
08:33No!
08:34I want to make sure.
08:35So now, it's supposed to be set in South America.
08:37But you filmed in Australia, was it?
08:39Yeah.
08:40Yeah.
08:41Yeah.
08:42Apparently, that wasn't our decision.
08:44But we had a great experience in Australia pretending to be in Brazil in the rainforest.
08:50Yeah.
08:51The Gold Coast.
08:53Nice.
08:54And you were in real swamps.
08:57Yeah.
08:58The first day, the first day of shooting for me was, I don't know, it was a night shoot.
09:04And we were in a swamp.
09:05Selton Mello and I were in a swamp up to our chest.
09:08And it was terrifying.
09:09It was real.
09:10And they were trying to put us at ease.
09:11And they said, we had guys come out and they cleared out the swamp yesterday.
09:16Like you can clear out a swamp.
09:18And they said, you know there's things swimming around.
09:21And even some of the crew said, I can't believe you're going in there.
09:24Which is not.
09:25I'm going to jump in here.
09:26There was someone on the crew who had a creepy crawly stuck to their leg.
09:30And you saved them.
09:31I didn't.
09:32It was a beetle.
09:33And you knew what to do.
09:34You were like.
09:35It was a beetle with a horn on it.
09:48It was a beetle that had a horn on it.
09:50Yes.
09:51Only found in the Australian hat back.
09:53But then this is weird.
09:54What's your nuts off if you're not careful?

09:58It was a nut biting beetle.
10:00Because Michelle, before you got into comedy, we'll talk about this later, you were a model.
10:06And didn't you have a beetle thing?

10:10Because they would just get you to do like random things in modeling where they were just sort
10:13of like, you're lucky to be here.
10:15We're going to do this shoot now.

10:34And then I did another shoot where they wanted me to sit on like a bit of wood.
10:40And as I sat down on it, it was in Texas.
10:42And I was like, oh, there's all these ants calling on me.
10:44But obviously from England, I didn't realize there's ants that bite.
10:47Do you know what I mean?
10:48Yeah.
10:49Yeah.
10:50What's the worst that can happen to you in this country?
10:51A pigeon shits on you or something.
10:52I was like, they're burning.
10:53They're burning.
10:54They're like, oh, it's a fire ants nest.
10:55And I was like, I should probably get up.
10:56And they were like, it's the last shot.
10:57If you could just stay there.

11:03Jessie Buckley, you grew up in the Irish countryside.
11:04So are you good with animals?
11:05Um, I feel like out of respect, they, you know, I should leave them alone.

11:26animals.

11:29But have you ever, have you had a bad experience or something?
11:33Well, actually, my mom grew up on a bull farm.

11:38And she had like, they were.
11:39Can I just say, that seems problematic.
11:42Why?
11:43Well, you need more than bulls on your bulls.
11:47But there were no pedigree bulls.
11:48I don't know.
11:49It's like a gay cow bar or something.

11:53Only bulls, I don't understand.
11:56Are they just bred bulls?
12:02Yeah, they were like prize bulls.
12:05So they'd bring them to shows and kind of wash them and brush their hair and show them
12:11around.

12:14Um, but I remember once, um, my grandfather brought me out into the fields and put me
12:21on his tractor and, um, I'd never really been around a load of bulls.
12:26Like a mass.

12:29Um, and he went to open the gate and close it and there was a load of hay on the back
12:34tractor.
12:35And he, all of a sudden, this like, it felt like a hundred bulls were running towards
12:42me.
12:43And since that moment, I just think, you know, out of respect, I don't need to wrangle
12:49anything.

12:55And what is the connection to Ireland?
12:56That you love Ireland so much?
12:57I just think it's the greatest place.

13:00I first went there on my own.
13:02I loved Irish music and I was just very drawn to Ireland.
13:05Okay.
13:06And my father spent a lot of time in Ireland because he was a Titanic expert and he used
13:09to take groups of people throughout Ireland to Belfast to Harlan Wolfe where the ship was
13:14built and he'd go down to Cove, which was the last port of call.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Yeah.
13:19So, we spent a lot of time in Ireland.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Was that his job?
13:22Yeah.
13:23Yeah.

13:25That's very niche.

13:28He used to work with the airlines and was a big history buff.
13:33He loved history.
13:35But he was a real Titanic enthusiast and that was, he started kind of giving these Titanic
13:41historical tours to other people who were as interested in Titanic as he was.
13:46And, uh, late in his life that was what he did.
13:49Yeah.
13:50And is Rod an Irish name?
13:52I think there's other Rod sausages.

14:19And so, uh, I grew up in America but, uh, we actually spread my dad's ashes in Ireland as well.

16:45And Hamnet is this incredibly beloved novel
16:48by Maggie O'Farrell.
16:49When they approached you, were you familiar with the book?
16:52Or...?
16:53No, no.
16:54I met Chloe Zhao first and then they sent me the book.
16:56Yeah.
16:57And for people who haven't read the book,
16:59and lots of people have, tell us about Hamnet
17:02and kind of its relation to Shakespeare and sort of, you know,
17:05why it's so special.
17:06I guess it's a peek behind the curtain of who the family man,
17:09Shakespeare, William Shakespeare, might have been.
17:12And, um...
17:14And where Hamlet might have kind of been born from, which was...
17:19Shakespeare actually did have a son called Hamnet,
17:21who died of the plague.
17:22I had no idea about that.
17:24I thought it was about a Danish prince.
17:26Yeah.

17:28And it's about love and loss and motherhood and, uh, art
17:35and the need of kind of storytelling to hold the parts of us
17:38that we can't hold by ourselves.

17:48And the Hamlet-Hamlet thing, those names, am I right,

18:48for, like, the week and, uh, except...
18:52Bodhi, who plays Susannah, my daughter in the blue,
18:56really didn't want to do it.
18:59I feel like she's, like, my emo teenager in that,
19:02where I'm kind of proud that she's like,
19:04oh, my God, I can't believe I've to do this, please.
19:10But it was such a gorgeous shoot and those kids are incredible
19:14and Paul is promising.

19:34And there's a moment right at the end that I...
19:37Is it you and Chloe, the director, you came up with together?

19:44Um, yeah, I mean, the end, we didn't know what to do.
19:48It was quite scary because it was, like, the whole end
19:51of shooting the whole film and we'd had this amazing journey
19:54and we were like, God, we've got to, like, land the plane now.
19:57How do you, like, land the plane after this and go to the globe,
20:00which is epic in just its name?

20:04Um, and there was a moment at the...
20:07I mean, there was these incredible extras, 400 extras,
20:10and then there was a moment where I was standing
20:12in the middle of a recreated globe
20:15and there was all these incredible faces around me
20:18and I sent Chloe Max Richter's On The Nature Of Daylight
20:24and from that piece of music, um, this ending came
20:29where they all reached, 400 people behind me reached their hands
20:34to try and touch the play and, I guess, touch the things
20:39that they've lost in their own life.

20:41In some way.
20:42That's a really beautiful moment.
20:43And this wonderful thing's happened to you.
20:45You're now a mum.
20:46You became a mum after the film.

32:20And you've got to get the plates okay that is your job you've got to nick the plates
32:24And I was just like I was such a you know like a anxious kid I'd like be freaking out
32:29It was like I was doing a heist in the loop
32:31You know what I mean I've got to nick these plates to my mum so we can have the full set
32:36Which is weird because she doesn't cook so it's sort of like what are they here for yeah
