00:00Or a chiropractor.
00:02No.
00:03Remember when Captain Augustus McCray from Lonesome Dove?
00:06Yeah, he ends up dying.
00:08Yeah, and then Tommy Lee Jones, who plays Woodrow Call,
00:11had to haul Robert Duvall's body all the way back to Georgia.
00:14Yeah.
00:15Remember the way that Robert Duvall was walking?
00:17Yeah, he had septics in his leg.
00:19Well, that's how you walk anymore.
00:20No.
00:21That's what I'm saying.
00:22Don't drag my foot. I can go run right now.
00:24You could run a circle.
00:25What are you talking about?
00:30Danny D, what's up?
00:44Danny, do I walk weird?
00:46Do you walk weird?
00:48Well, because my brother said that I walk like I dragged my foot.
00:52I don't know, man. Why you ask me questions like this? A little bit.
00:55You guys are, you guys are, I don't even know what you're talking about.
00:59It's not that you walk weird. You walk like you have a hitch in your giddy-up.
01:02A hitch in my giddy-up.
01:04That's right, because I compared him to a cowboy.
01:07Hey, you know what?
01:08No, here's the thing.
01:09I was watching you go up the stairs the other day to the office.
01:12Looked a little Frankenstein-ish.
01:14Frankenstein.
01:15What are you talking about? You guys are, I don't know what's wrong with you guys.
01:18I'm going to teach you a real valuable lesson here, Robbie.
01:21When you're dealing with a Colby girl, if you don't want to know, don't ask.
01:26True story.
01:28Okay.
01:29What do you have? You got anything?
01:30I have a really fun place for you to go.
01:32Okay.
01:33Actually, it's not only a pick, but it's a roadside attraction.
01:35Ooh.
01:36You got my attention.
01:37Remember when we drove Route 66 and saw all those roadside attractions?
01:40I love Route 60s. I love doing Route 66 with you, Mike.
01:43It's so fun. We need to do that again soon.
01:45Woo!
01:46Woo!
01:47Yeah, there you go.
01:48Hey, there's the blue whale.
01:49There's the blue whale!
01:50There's the blue whale!
01:51Oh my gosh, this is cool.
01:52What is the blue whale?
01:53Route 66 history, baby.
01:56Holy cow, that looks amazing.
01:58Yeah, look at this.
01:59One, two, three.
02:01I love a roadside attraction.
02:04Are you boys ready?
02:05Because I am sending you to the Crystal Onyx Cave.
02:09You know what that is?
02:10I guess it's a cave?
02:12Yes, you're on it. You're on it.
02:14And the owners are Scott and Sarah.
02:16Lovely people. You're gonna really enjoy them.
02:18We're literally picking a cave today.
02:20Obviously, there's not gonna be much to pick in a cave, right?
02:23But they are super collectors.
02:25But they don't really have a rhyme or reason that they're collecting.
02:27So you're gonna go in there and you're just gonna see a bunch of very different items.
02:32Alright, send us the address.
02:34Alright, I love you guys. Have fun out there.
02:37Left a quarter of a mile for an adventure.
02:50The roadside attraction experience starts at the billboard.
02:54It draws you in, that takes you off of the highway, that sparks the interest.
02:59I just think we could be driving over the cave right now.
03:01Oh yeah. Look at the spider.
03:04Look at this spaceship and freaking giant ants.
03:07Look at these ants.
03:08Yeah.
03:09Look at the Martian.
03:10Let the randomness begin.
03:12Look at the draft.
03:13All of these things have absolutely nothing to do with the cave.
03:17But that's what's so cool about the roadside attraction.
03:20This is awesome, man.
03:21Look at this place.
03:22Look at this. Look at this, man.
03:25Definitely a roadside attraction. Look at the shark.
03:27Yeah, that's a hot shark.
03:28He's got it. Yeah.
03:29Hello.
03:30Hey.
03:31How you doing?
03:32Hey, I'm Mike.
03:33How are you guys?
03:34You guys here for a cave tour?
03:35No, no.
03:36Did you talk to Danny on the phone?
03:37I talked to Danny on the phone, yes.
03:38Yeah, this is some of the stuff she might have went over.
03:41Oh, okay.
03:42Are you one of the owners?
03:43You work here?
03:44Yes, my name is Sarah.
03:45Okay.
03:46How long have you guys had this?
03:47Since 2010.
03:48How far is it from Mammoth Cave?
03:51We're about 15 miles from Mammoth Cave.
03:52No kidding.
03:53Cave City has always been a tourist town full of roadside attractions.
03:57And it's home to Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest known cave system in the world.
04:04Almost 500 miles of cave discovered right here in the hills of Kentucky.
04:09But not just Mammoth Cave, the smaller family owned ones too.
04:14All of this has an economic ripple effect to this little town, Cave City, Kentucky.
04:19So where are you guys from originally?
04:20Are you from this area?
04:21Michigan.
04:22Oh, yeah, you're down.
04:23So you moved all of that stuff here from Michigan, the whole collection?
04:26Yes.
04:27That's part of the problem is all that stuff we have down here.
04:30Okay.
04:31That's why we called you guys in.
04:32Yeah.
04:33My husband's down there waiting for you guys.
04:34We'll take you down there.
04:35All right, cool.
04:36Lead the way.
04:37So who discovered the cave in 1960?
04:40Cleon Turner.
04:41And then they opened it up to the public in 1965.
04:44Okay.
04:45So where do you get all this stuff, like the rocket and the aliens and the ants?
04:48A lot of that, Scott made those.
04:50Really?
04:51Oh, he built that rocket?
04:52Yep.
04:53Did he make this ant?
04:54Nope.
04:55That there is from Mexico.
04:56Oh, it's aluminum.
04:57Yep.
04:58I saw some of these when we came in.
04:59Look at that thing, Robbie.
05:02This is exactly the kind of thing you would see in the roadside attraction playbook if there was one.
05:08Something that's bigger than life, grabs your attention, and makes you smile.
05:12Have you ever sold an ant?
05:13What do you get for an ant?
05:14About $450.
05:15Okay.
05:16$400.
05:17$400.
05:18$400.
05:19Sounds like something we can do.
05:20You want to do it?
05:21Yeah.
05:22All right, I'm doing it.
05:23All right, thank you.
05:24Very cool.
05:25It's not the oddest thing I've ever seen to buy.
05:27Something like this that's so unique and interesting, I think, is going to be easy to sell.
05:33Let's go see Scott.
05:34Okay.
05:35Dang.
05:36That's cool.
05:37Oh, wow.
05:38More storage.
05:39All right, you got some gas pumps.
05:40Yeah, you got some gas pumps.
05:41Yeah, very cool.
05:42All right, Scott, are you here?
05:43Back here.
05:44Look at that cutaway.
05:45Wow.
05:46That's cool.
05:47Holy cow.
05:48Hey, hey, hey.
05:49Hey.
05:50That thing's cool.
05:51How you doing, buddy?
05:52Good.
05:53How about yourself?
05:54I just bought an an off your wife.
05:55Oh, you get the $600 for it?
05:57No.
05:58$600?
05:59I don't know.
06:00She said she started at $450.
06:01We did $4.
06:02That's coming off your pay.
06:04So where are you guys from in Michigan?
06:05Thumb.
06:06Okay, you're right.
06:07Right below the thumb.
06:08Okay.
06:09Before we bought this cave for about 40 years, the wife and I traveled around the country to
06:13the swap meets dealing in automotive vintage speed equipment.
06:16I deal mostly in intake manifolds and valve covers, vintage speed equipment.
06:19So you specialize in that?
06:20Yeah.
06:21Okay.
06:22But I like the oddball stuff.
06:23Yeah, I saw that.
06:24Like an alien or something like that.
06:25Yeah.
06:26And I saw you got some gas pumps and stuff.
06:27Oh, yeah.
06:28I'm going to let you guys talk.
06:29I've got to get back to work.
06:30Okay.
06:31Hey, thank you so much.
06:32Nice to meet you.
06:33It was nice to meet you.
06:34Nice to meet you.
06:35Nice to meet you.
06:37What's going on with the...
06:38Where'd you get that cutaway at, man?
06:39That's pretty cool.
06:40I picked up at a little show called Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
06:41Oh, yeah.
06:42That's a little one.
06:43What's the tag say?
06:44Carolina County Schools.
06:46So that's weird.
06:47So this was in a school in the U.S. and it's a Fiat.
06:50I think the unit of size, you couldn't do this with a Cadillac.
06:53No.
06:54Or you couldn't do it with a Chevy or any of that stuff.
06:55So you could do it in a little Fiat.
06:56Yeah.
06:57And this is its actual drivetrain right here.
06:59The last time I found a Fiat cutout was in its homeland in Italy.
07:03It's like a cutout.
07:04It's for the driving school.
07:08Can I turn this?
07:09Yes.
07:10I'm going to turn this thing.
07:11No, I want to turn it out this way.
07:13Okay.
07:14I don't know what you're talking about.
07:15You're saying this motor right here ran the whole thing?
07:17Yes.
07:18This is where it was.
07:19But the gearbox is all there.
07:20You can put a motor back on it.
07:21So it's missing the power plant that drove everything.
07:24Correct.
07:25They did quite a good job cutting away the mufflers.
07:27Oh, it's done really well.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Even the wheel cylinders are cut down.
07:30They cut down very detailed on this.
07:32I like how they angled the motor in there, you know.
07:34I mean, is it something you want to sell?
07:36I probably could be persuaded.
07:39Well, what are you thinking on it?
07:41About 3,800.
07:42Okay.
07:43Let me see the front of it a little bit more.
07:44Obviously, like-minded people.
07:45We've been to a lot of the same shows.
07:47It sounds like he's a pretty big dealer.
07:49But that doesn't discourage me because, you know, we all get to a point where we've got
07:53too much inventory or we're just changing gears in life.
07:57If you turn this wheel, it's moving the rear end, but is it moving the interior of the
08:02transmission?
08:03Gear shift is not there.
08:04That's what I'm saying.
08:05It's got to be in gear to make it happen.
08:08It'd be really cool if you could get some sort of power plant over here and just be
08:13able to flip a switch with the lights on and see all of this operating.
08:17It'd be insane.
08:18Does this whole thing pivot on here?
08:19Yes.
08:20Because look, you turned this knob.
08:21You can turn that.
08:22You got it?
08:23Hold on.
08:24Okay.
08:25You getting it?
08:26I'm getting it.
08:27All right.
08:28Let's see if we can lift it now.
08:30There it goes.
08:31Yeah.
08:32There we go.
08:33Look at this.
08:34Keep going.
08:35Keep going.
08:36Keep going.
08:37Right there.
08:38Oh, wow.
08:39Look at it now.
08:40That's really cool, man.
08:41$20,000.
08:42I mean, it looks to me like the sprocket here is there, but there's a gearbox.
08:47It's missing the top sprocket and the motor.
08:50It's got to need some work.
08:52I want to get it going.
08:53You know what?
08:54I'd probably do $32,000 on it.
08:56I'm not going to argue with you.
08:59$3,200.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Very cool.
09:02I love it, man.
09:03Well, let's pull her outside so you can see the good stuff back there.
09:06All right.
09:07It's very unusual to find a full-size car in a cutaway.
09:10Fiat did it right here.
09:11If you were working on one of these and you had this model next to you, you'd be able
09:15to fix anything on it.
09:17Leave it to the Europeans to design something so cool, but so simple.
09:20Wow.
09:21That's so cool, man.
09:22Thing looks better outside.
09:23It's so cool that it's on this articulating stand so you can move it around and see all
09:28the different angles.
09:29It's really well thought out.
09:30It's very well made.
09:32It's basically industrial art that's a hands-on teaching aid.
09:36That's awesome.
09:37Very cool.
09:38I figured you'd want your money back now.
09:39So is a lot of this stuff like pieces and parts where you're making things out of?
09:57Because, you know, when we pull up, you've got like little spaceships.
10:00When I see a shape or an object, I think, how could I make an alien or a dinosaur out
10:05of it?
10:06It's just good photo ops and people just love that kind of stuff.
10:09Route 66, that's what I'm trying to go for, a roadside attraction.
10:13But we get a lot of families here.
10:14We get a lot of families here.
10:15A lot of children.
10:16And I'm just hoping when they get older, they say, I remember that.
10:19And maybe they'll bring their kids down here.
10:21I remember parents taking me out on trips, seeing the biggest ball of twine or whatever,
10:25and biggest Coke bottle and all that.
10:28And you know, those all went by the wayside.
10:30He is the perfect curator for this property because he hasn't forgotten what's interesting
10:35to a child.
10:36He's still a big kid at heart.
10:38We've seen this cave about half a dozen different times before he bought it some 20,
10:4230 years ago.
10:43As a tourist.
10:44Yeah, as a tourist.
10:45So it's, you know, amazing that we're able to get it.
10:47We have just about every type of formation you could want to see here at Crystal Honest Cave.
10:51And it's up close.
10:52You're not standing 50 foot away looking through plexiglass.
10:55You're literally walking through some formations.
10:58We spent about eight years refurbishing the cave.
11:01I did the work that it deserved.
11:03This cave belongs to everybody.
11:04We want to protect the cave for the future generations.
11:07What a blessing.
11:08Yes, it is.
11:09That's awesome.
11:10There's not a lot Scott can do to upgrade the experience in the caves.
11:13God made that perfect.
11:15But up here, this is Scott's playground.
11:17This is his blank canvas of whatever he dreams up.
11:26Dude, there's Rat.
11:27How much is Rat Fink?
11:28Uh, those go for around 400 bucks.
11:31They're cast aluminum.
11:33Rat Fink is kind of like the Mickey Mouse of the Hot Rod world.
11:37Which is ironic because Big Daddy Roth created Rat Fink because of his dislike for Mickey Mouse.
11:43He came up with this character in the 1950s.
11:46And ever since then, Rat Fink has been one of the most recognized mascots of custom car culture.
11:52All the old guys know what it is.
11:54The old guys and, you know, we're trying to teach the young guys about it.
11:56That's right.
11:57350.
11:58Oh, man.
12:00I'm pretty cheap at 400 on those.
12:02You're cheap on it.
12:03Alright, I'm doing it.
12:04I'm doing 400.
12:05Alright.
12:06We have a Cars and Coffee event at Columbia Motor Alley the third Saturday of every month.
12:11So I want to put this outside where kids can get their picture taken next to it.
12:16I saw some gas pumps.
12:17This is an American and this is a barn.
12:20These are visibles.
12:21Yes.
12:22What are you going to do with these?
12:23I'd probably be willing to sell them.
12:25I'd be more interested in this one right here.
12:27Ah, yes.
12:28They actually had a barn fire so you can see they kind of got a little smoke color to them.
12:33What do you think you got to have out of all three of them?
12:35I probably would have to get around 7,000 for all three.
12:3925, 25, two.
12:41Yeah.
12:42I'd have to be around four grand.
12:43I mean, because this one's missing the cylinder.
12:45It's missing the top.
12:46You know, the condition.
12:48I'm afraid I can't quite do four grand on those.
12:50Okay.
12:51But I do have a couple more if you want to take a look at it.
12:53Maybe we could do a package deal on all of them.
12:55Where are they at?
12:56Walk this way.
12:57All right.
12:58All right.
12:59Dang, man.
13:00Did you move these up here?
13:01Yeah.
13:02Dragged them up with the tractor.
13:03When I moved out of Michigan, it was like condensing five gallons into a gallon container.
13:08And those shipping containers were just really handy.
13:10Ooh.
13:11Yeah.
13:12That's one you may not even be able to walk through.
13:14Oh, yeah.
13:15Look at that Amaco sign.
13:16I know it's rough, but I was saying probably like around 1,200 on it.
13:19I got the surround for it, the top.
13:21Oh, yeah.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Don't scratch it.
13:28Flaming the ring.
13:29I'll throw those in.
13:30Let me grab the ring for it.
13:32All right.
13:33He's trying to talk us into it.
13:34Robbie's getting a ring.
13:35The ring looks like it went to a tornado.
13:36Look at that.
13:37It's all.
13:38Oh.
13:39It could be heating up and put back in.
13:40How do you go about straightening stuff like that?
13:42You run the forklift on it, and then you let it sit for like two days, and it'll be fine.
13:46You know as well as I do, as soon as you flatten it, more porcelain comes off of it.
13:49It could.
13:50You have to do it.
13:51It's a slow process.
13:52800 bucks.
13:53If it was missing pieces, I could say that.
13:55But I got the flame for the top.
13:57But what about the condition?
13:58Patina.
13:59Yeah.
14:00That's all it is.
14:01Get out of here.
14:021,000 bucks.
14:03850.
14:04950.
14:05What do you think, RJ?
14:06I guess we're doing the work.
14:07I guess we're doing it.
14:08It's there.
14:09I was thinking about, you know, straining that out a little bit.
14:10But I kind of realized, you know what?
14:11I got so many projects.
14:12Probably never get around to it.
14:13So, time to let it go.
14:14Robbie, right here's a Mae West.
14:15Oh, it's rough on the back side of it.
14:16Yeah, that thing's rougher than a corn cob.
14:17Yeah.
14:18Is that one of the ones you were talking about?
14:19Yeah.
14:20Yeah.
14:21Yeah.
14:22It's rough.
14:23It's rough.
14:24Yeah.
14:25It's rough.
14:26Yeah.
14:27It's rough.
14:28Yeah.
14:29It's rough.
14:30Yeah.
14:31Is that one of the ones you were talking about?
14:32Yeah, unfortunately.
14:33Yeah, that thing's rough.
14:34I can see what you're saying.
14:36I've never seen one rotted that bad.
14:44Okay, this is the other one you're talking about?
14:47Yes.
14:48Oh, it's a tokum, but it's got the dial on it.
14:50This one's probably the best conditioned one you got.
14:52It is.
14:53This is the best one you got.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Where are you at with all five?
14:56you don't really want to sell them do you not really yeah i just got to walk away there's
15:07three other containers here and i need to dig into these
15:09my favorite light i got your favorite light it's so unusual well i'm not even sure what it's for
15:17huh where'd you find this at hershey and that could of course that could have had a glass
15:23yes for the it did because look there's a reflector right there i don't think it was for automobiles
15:29i mean i'm gonna throw my hat in the ring and say possibly trolley car what do you think on that
15:34missing the post on the bottom you know that thing's probably gonna be around 1200 it's really
15:38interesting with this orbital light on top but yellow lenses on traffic lights didn't come out
15:43until the 1920s there were also traffic lights called silent cop lights where basically there
15:49was an officer at the intersection and he was working with the light itself so there's a lot
15:54of different possibilities it's just so intriguing and so different i'm not gonna pass it up 800 bucks
16:00uh can't do that work with me some bottom line thousand bucks
16:08hold that
16:12thousand bucks
16:15condition that's patina i don't know about that's beyond that's beyond yeah okay thousand bucks okay
16:24thanks man i appreciate it whoa hey don't scratch that i always say when i buy something that's
16:31like a fate worse than death because it's just gonna get locked away in my storage containers
16:35so i'm glad somebody bought it that will enjoy it there's even more rare one way back there
16:41it's called a mushroom there's another one that's next to it that looks a little bit more ornate than
16:45it those are old town chicago lights are those two something you'd want to sell i i'll sell them but
16:52you probably ain't gonna like the price three grand for the pair i'm gonna have to come back there
16:56take a look all right back in the early days when traffic lights were getting more and more
17:00prevalent in cities they were made out of solid cast iron really ornate but as time went on they
17:06just casted them aside and then put ugly ones in i believe this is the mushroom yeah it says mushroom
17:11right on it so what are you thinking on the pair 4 500 for the pair i think that's closer to the retail
17:19number for how unusual those are that's a pretty decent price i'm at three grand this would have
17:26had like a white globe on it you're gonna have to find the poles for the bottom of them the base
17:30itself would have been ornate too i'll come up some how much can i dig them out and actually look at
17:37the you know i want to make sure all the glass is actually intact on them ain't gonna be easy job but
17:42i think we can get them out there we go watch your hand coming down
17:53all right ready go you got them yeah i got it out so that's just a vase that it's sitting on yeah
18:04somebody made that how many more are there there's one i can get it out of here let me see i'll help
18:09you okay and then that down these street lights got thrown into the dump when they were done with
18:19them or they got crushed the fact that these two exist and they're still here that's what's mind
18:25blowing i mean that's a work of art these things don't have a mark on them they're not cracked they're
18:29not broken the lenses are intact when you talk about a hundred year old traffic light that is
18:34absolutely amazing 3 700. sounds like a deal all right man that's cool brother do you remember
18:45where this one came out of old town chicago old town chicago both these would oh my gosh my brother
18:50and i both floated in and out of chicago for years the fact that these are from chicago and that robbie's
18:56into transportation history really drives it home and how cool they are to us
19:01you got it i have respect for them i mean uh they treated me fair so unfortunately we couldn't
19:08come to grips on some items but uh no i'm very happy with how it went it was a fun day
19:14i love what you're doing for not just your family but for the community
19:17it's so cool to have a place like this when most people are at the point where they're settling down
19:22scott and sarah uprooted their whole lives and moved to cave city kentucky to be the caretakers
19:28of something that they're extremely passionate about i think what continues to drive them is not
19:34only their love for each other but also their love for adventure come see us in nashville
19:39dude danny just sent me pictures of the truck which one the guys mr truck we're going to look at
19:57that it's a co-truck why is she sending you pictures of that truck because i'm the truck guy
20:02hey it doesn't even get any better than that look at the advertising on the side of that thing
20:06look at that here we're getting close right here gates closed there's a dude look at all his trucks
20:14too are you freaking what is up look at you
20:18all right here we go got it i'm under control jonesing out here come on come on these aren't just
20:28regular trucks here i know i what's going on you dick how you doing man hey buddy what's going on i'm
20:40nice to meet you nice to meet you here hit him with a flyer right there trucks you have no idea
20:46how excited my brother is about trucks i like you guys are you guys are cut from the same cloth
20:51i like trucks how many trucks you got i don't know 50. 50 that's part of the reason i called you guys
20:59i got a precious little girl by the name of bria okay she's eight and i'm hanging out with her all
21:04the time okay you got a granddaughter you know she's got a couple vehicles in here she wants papa
21:09to make sure she gets okay the rest of this stuff probably is going to go away so priorities are
21:14changing bria's my granddaughter that's a lot more important than a 65 chrysler so i came up with a
21:19five-year plan to sell 20 cars a year because i got a downside somehow i'm ready to go to hanger five
21:25all right let's how many hangers you got uh that's the only one next to the airport did these used to
21:30be hangers though no were they connected to the airport it was a funeral home okay there's a lot of
21:35people that are in the same exact position as dick dude were you the towing service it was my own
21:40rig for my own stuff they're starting to reevaluate things priorities change but he's way ahead of the
21:46game because he's making these decisions himself he's not waiting until the last minute when sometimes
21:52these decisions are made for us who's dean uh he ran a copy service here before the funeral home
21:59so we're uh working on projects in here what's going on with this thing man this is crazy look at
22:03this robbie that's an air porter made by checker this thing ryan it will run but it's probably been
22:08sleeping here for 10 years robbie take a picture of me with this thing hold on there believe it or not
22:13we have come across these checker aero buses over the years they started making them in the early 60s
22:19and really they were produced to transport people on the tarmac they're so unique looking and
22:25different a lot of times they end up as a promotional vehicle this cadillac limousine man
22:31this is a 57 cadillac fleetwood limo and back in the day governor brown from california rode in this
22:37car wow you got a singer look at that robbie so you have all these cars what did you do for a living
22:44i drilled wheels oil and gas yeah i started that in 1970-71 my brother brad and i did that i did the
22:51production and brad did the rigs so when you first started that what was your background how did you
22:55know to get into that we're engineers my dad went to yale university he was an engineer and of course
23:00he has four boys and every one of us wanted to be an engineer and that's what happened to us we all
23:05went off and did that i was in the south working for general electric on power plants and i got
23:10exposed to the oil field and i said no that's no i know what i want to do yeah you know after a while
23:16you'd figure out what you want to do and that was like magic every day i'd get up and i'd be
23:20ready to jump he loved it that much the biggest compliment my dad ever gave me is later in life
23:26he said you are a risk taker more than i ever was you'll try anything and i was i mean i tried a lot
23:34of stuff didn't always work but i was going to give it a shot so what are you asking for the singer
23:38my your first lowest offer your first the only reason i'm asking about the singer is because i'm
23:46a sponge and i want to know the value of things i wanted six five sound that's a good i'll take four
23:51and if my lowest offer was two you own it yeah i'm always wanting to learn and that's the cool
23:58thing about our job man this is 56 isn't it it is the engine's a new 312 but once the ignition's
24:04finished it it'll drive again what's this worth running down the road $39,000 and it's not like
24:09you're sitting in school falling asleep on your desk you know this is all hands-on history this is
24:15from our area right here boy you weren't just buying trucks now you're buying tractors that happens
24:20look at this rj got some stuff hey dick do you want to sell this propeller yeah i mean it's non-usable
24:27it looks like the plane actually crashed this is a prop if you were ever a pilot which i was i flew
24:33planes for 20 years you just have to buy something like that what do you want to give me for it
24:39125 you want to try a little harder i threw the number out there you got to come back at me okay 200
24:47160 yeah that was simple everybody typically wants the wooden propellers the aluminum ones i find
24:54quite often this is just a prop it's going to go up in someone's home or it's going to go in a business
25:00so dick what mounts on here what does this stand for kr wilson buffalo new york gets an engine stand
25:06but i don't know what it fits it looks like it looks like it would take a model a model an old
25:11four-cylinder flathead something yeah what are you thinking on it would you sell it oh sure
25:15100 bucks all right i'm gonna do that it'd be cool to display something on it this is missing a few
25:21pieces but i think we can find them and once we do we can start displaying some of the engines that we
25:27have in a better way i love it let me show you this building next door okay cool flightline roadhouse
25:44i'll show you where the airplane's at i'd love to see that what year is it that's a 34 pete and paul
25:50okay pete and paul wow nice i haven't seen this side of you dick you got glass cases cool there's
25:57some good stuff in here he's got a bar right in his office here i like your style man so this bar
26:02was a soda fountain at lloyd's landing on cross lake that sign was on it closed for violation of
26:08national prohibition act wow i was a member of an antique car club here in town and i bought a wrecker
26:16then the word got out you know and then people would call me and say well my aunt has got this
26:20old car she can't drive anymore why don't you come look at it of course i'd buy it the next thing i know
26:24it got crazy and i just kept buying stuff and it was a hobby that went astray pete and paul 34 model
26:31it was all in pieces it wasn't hard to assemble it wow look at this i drove it last month i drive it
26:37often did you yes six volts same thing positive ground three speed yeah i still burn rubber this thing's all
26:45sweaty who painted it we did the fenders the body's never been painted the dash and everything's
26:49original paint yes no doubt every once in a while you come across something that is an original paint
26:56and it's so nice that it just blows your mind how long ago did you paint the fenders on this thing
27:0285 no kidding see you wouldn't do that now would you i could sandblast the fenders and beat them up for
27:07you so anybody knows if you're a car guy and you want to buy a car and you got a wife
27:15it might have a problem i got it home it was valentine's day oh yeah and i said um
27:21happy valentine's day and she looked at it she said it's beautiful give me the title
27:29she wanted to make sure it was hers that's right and i did i had to no doubt man but i've been in
27:34those predicaments so this is a keeper well i lost sherry yeah okay i'm sorry well how long ago last year
27:42oh i'm sorry and i'm i'm thinking about yeah it's time how long were you with sherry 46 years oh my
27:50gosh sherry loved nice looking cars and she loved to ride it and go somewhere with me we'd stop and
27:57eat ice cream in the afternoon and go to dinner at night and meet people all over she loved that
28:02that was fun i'm seven years into my five-year plan to sell 20 or 25 cars a year of 20 to 25 cars okay
28:10i'm behind it's an emotional journey to have this much history around you it's a big deal that he's
28:17thinking about selling the cars that are connected to some of the biggest moments don't you love being
28:23around the stuff too like when i go into where my motorcycles are i love being around absolutely i love
28:28being around it well i never felt like i should pay a psychiatrist i could sit this and try to start
28:32it and i'm okay yeah there you go it's humbling to be with dick at this point in his life because i'm
28:39kind of approaching that stage two like you know we're all gonna be there this is a man's car right
28:45here this is starliner that thing's got some play man four speed disc brakes locker rear end three two
28:51barrels on a 390. wow i know man so what do you value this thing at 50. what do you value the
28:5735 ass same dick wasn't screwing around when he said he was a car collector i mean there's some
29:02bad cars in here man but where are the trucks what age do you think that used car sign has on it oh
29:09it's probably uh 50s or 60. is it wood or metal it's uh metal i'm pretty sure we'll know when we get
29:16there no it's it's uh it's metal and it's got a uh a metal frame too not a wood frame it's metal on metal
29:23i'm thinking on that 300 bucks i'll give you five that's more than generous all right thank you hey
29:31thank you it's yours that used car sign in my mind it wasn't worth 500 so when you're gonna pay me 500
29:38i need to say yes sir so dick i saw this over here chevy service where'd that sign come from have no idea
29:47that's something you want to sell dick yep see the other side of it here it's two sides
29:53um it's in pretty good shape i mean it's got some whammies on it but it's cool what are you thinking
29:59on this thing 750. i'm gonna do one better for you than that give you a thousand bucks it's yours
30:06he could have just bought it for 750 and i probably would have been happy but now i'm impressed
30:10tells me something about it his brother same way that work yes sir
30:24is this the boardroom it is here here we go look at this super chevy service flat rate schedule 50 to
30:3054. i have a dealership from 47. did you yeah no i still do what do you want for this
30:3725 bucks all right i gotta get it i just put it on the shelf there man this book is the service rates
30:42from the 1950s so this would have been on the desk in someone's office in like the building that i own
30:47so we're kind of bringing it on home okay that's cool what are you thinking on that packard chassis 25
30:54bucks no i'll give you i'll give you 50 bucks you're low you're low on it you know that's what i like about
30:59you yeah it was just sitting there not doing any good i figured he needed more than i did this is a
31:05cottage chair all hand painted 1870s 1880s this is all handmade man dude jersey is wearing off on you
31:13i know he is hey you know what jersey's my furniture mentor dude i know enough to be dangerous just
31:19because i'm putting in literally hundreds of miles with jersey talking about furniture so some of this
31:26stuff that i used to walk by i'm starting to pick it up now because of my mentor furniture guy jersey
31:31john 150 bucks 300 170 170 that's more than i wanted okay all right very cool i figured it was
31:4320 bucks but he liked it and he offered me a handsome price and of course i have to say yes
31:48i noticed this car when i was standing over there a bright orange student what year is it 14. wow
31:55it's like a tractor you got hand controls back in the day you had primer cups you dribble a little
32:01down each one of these little we all benefit from guys like dick in the hobby the ones that really
32:06dive into and research the mechanical aspect of everything so then we do this close them not just
32:13to fix things but also to help us understand the evolution of what we have all right you ready yeah
32:25it's a magnificent piece of machinery
32:44so are we ever gonna go see that truck robbie did you see this sign patience has never been one of my
32:49brothers strong suits it looks like it's been through a fire are you familiar with where it
32:53was because you can see some char on this side i don't and you can see how the sign is bent well
32:58what happened was the porcelain kind of heated up you'll never get it to straighten out because
33:02they hatched it melted whatever it was right there oh yeah porcelain is pretty much indestructible
33:08but this one has been in a fire the damage that it's sustained is irreversible the retail on
33:13i think it's like 700 bucks i tell you what i'd do five let's go you want to do it yeah okay i mean
33:19here's the deal it's like there's always an entry-level collector this is a really rare
33:24sign and it does have the original bracket but condition is everything hey dick can i see those
33:29trucks all right next building over you weren't even kidding here you got a b-mac there this is an
33:35auto car you got a ford in the middle that's why we named it big truck what's this project you're
33:39working on here what are you doing to this chrysler that is a 35 chrysler wow dick you weren't
33:44a kidding 35 chrysler eight cylinder one of the high-end cars for 35. he's freaking right now dick
33:50he likes trucks i own my own business my entire life trucks are for people that want to get stuff
33:55done in the world and you wonder why my brother always calls me that's the one 47. this is hand
34:03painted right here valentine's 86 proof this thing run yes it's a cab over yeah yeah so the engine sits
34:10between the driver and the swamper okay would you say the driver and the who swamper you know the
34:17god god does all the work the driver sits there and steers oh yeah baby look at this rj wolf yeah
34:25look at that crank the window that's the ac right there lloyd rainier who loved fords bought it and
34:32he and my friend jack thomas would drive this to the paid swap meet from shreveport with all their junk in
34:38the back so what is paid like two and a half three hours from here he's stuck yours like that you
34:43gotta bump it now love it i could get you out all right dick says he can get out
34:55dude it's right here i got him you're trying to tell me these guys drove this
35:02every year to the paint swap meet they did what do you sleep in the back how far is it 300 miles
35:08can you imagine robbie see this thing go down the road that'd be nuts you know let's drive 40 or
35:13something it has no rust in it whatsoever robbie look at this there's a different liquor on the
35:17other side look at that that's all hand painted this thing is so solid it's crazy so you got a title of
35:26this thing yeah i got a title the condition of the signage on this truck is incredible it's all hand
35:33painted the graphics the color i think this might be the coolest cabover i've seen it's a real time
35:39capsule i could see why my brother is geeking out over it 48 000 miles on it the first engine was the 47
35:46lloyd put that 53 flathead in there with a distributor and a much better engine dick is one of those guys
35:52want to call him a savior because this truck had it been sitting outside all the advertising on the
35:57side of it would have been gone it's not even faded out let me look at the other side of this thing then
36:02you got the condition of the co itself i mean it's magic this is for sale yeah i'm thinking 30 30 000
36:11you're thinking 30 because of the advertising yes the paintings on the back are something nobody can do
36:17over it's a time capsule i was thinking like 17. just because of the work that's going to go back
36:28into it i'm not going to put it back on the street the way it is i can't drive 40. the fact that the
36:33truck engine has been changed to a 53 with a distributor big plus easy to work on and i come down
36:39a little but not 17. you gotta you gotta pick your game up a little bit there
36:48i'm gonna come back and think about this okay dick kind of blew me out of the water at 30 grand
36:53get a toothpick and chew on it does that help yes sir okay and i understand where he's coming from it's
36:58got the original advertising but no one is going to drive this thing 40 mile an hour especially me
37:09i saw something over here when we first walked in so is this oldsmobile is that what i'm looking at
37:18here 88 rocket 88 those hung on the wall at roundtree oldsmobile in shreveport the 88 was on the side of
37:25their building it was put up when the rocket 88 was the thing to buy if you kind of gauge the age of
37:31them i mean the rocket 88 came out 49 that was the first year yeah and then a lot of people consider
37:37it the first muscle car they considered the beginning of crazy hot rod times the rocket 88
37:43motor was used in drag cars all the time oh yeah and first nascar too and that's correct they were
37:48bumping the hemi the rocket 88 was so influential that it wasn't just dominating on the track it was
37:54also dominating on the airwaves so imagine if these things were lit up man it's like there'd be smoke
38:00coming off of these suckers man well glass is somewhat broken like no i know i mean you'd have to
38:05do the work you'd have to pay the money to do the work yeah porcelain is still in good shape
38:12thousand apiece about three how about 25 they're worth 25. would you do that yeah okay all right
38:21i'll do i'm good all right i love them i think they're really cool to have the porcelain 88 off an
38:28original dealership is epic it just really elevates the value and the interest of the sign how about
38:35this one it's a 48 it's got a small block chevy and a standard four speed so what could you cruise
38:40this at then 55. let's stay focused on this thing i'm with you okay i'm here i gave you a number your
38:49number's here i'm right here where does it need to be 26 000.
38:54i want to be at 20 grand 20 26 and i'll haul it to your house for free well how far do i have to go
39:06iowa it's about a thousand dollars to haul it up there probably
39:12i think i'm pretty good what do you think of this dick if he's
39:16he's at 20. i know he has to come up a little bit i'm looking right through him staring at this cool
39:23motor sign okay how about if i did uh you know because it conditions everything on that i just
39:32a little bit away i do four grand on the sign i'm just gonna throw my hat in the ring and see if i can
39:38bring this deal together for these guys this is a 1930s cool motor clover shaped sign a very rare sign
39:46they also had an earlier version that they call the kite sign a lot of the cool motor stuff especially
39:52in this condition is extremely hard to find four thousand for the sign and would you come up a grand
39:5821 000. there you go we're doing it you're all right did that work it worked all right i wasn't
40:07sure how it would twist but it twisted twisted right is that how that works i can do that okay all right
40:12you owe me 500. i'm still on as far as i'm concerned mike saved the day
40:20i don't know if i want to tell him that all right so i gotta ask were you serious about hauling it for
40:25a thousand bucks yes i want to make a trip to iowa so if it's a little bit more than that i would be
40:31glad to pay okay so if it's 2500 that's okay there's a cap on it there wouldn't you crap your
40:37pants if he showed up and he drove this up there all right i gotta look at this sign now that i bought
40:42it it's cloverleaf yeah man how's the other side some whammies on it on the edges of it still it's
40:49amazing it's got the original sign frame and bracket here you need a bigger truck yeah we need a bigger
40:55truck we can fill that truck up and you can haul it up there for us i think he has you leaving
41:01tonight i ain't gonna live long enough to move all this stuff out i'm not really interested in calling
41:07auction company abc to come in and wipe it all out of here in a week that's no fun hey i appreciate
41:13you taking the time buddy it's been a good day it's been a good day that truck went to a good home i had a
41:18lot of fun been a good day thank you thank you for coming down i appreciate it dick's one of those guys
41:23you want to inspire to be like maybe in a couple months i'll go back there and knock on the door
41:26and see how many other trucks he wants to sell see you buddy how do you go about straightening stuff
41:42like that you run the forklift on it and it'll be fine you know as well as i do as soon as you
41:46flatten it more porcelain comes off it could
