Sir James Cleverly, Shadow Levelling Up Secretary, says that "diplomacy isn't a prize for good behaviour" but that the current Labour government is "rather too keen to please China than to hold China to account". The former Foreign Secretary's comments come after reports that Chinese hackers have accessed confidential documents and data in a Foreign Office hack. Report by Ketchs. 00:00I think it's really important we wait for formal attribution of this.
00:04But also we need to recognise that diplomacy isn't a prize for good behaviour.
00:10When I went to China as Foreign Secretary, I raised the issue of the Uyghur Muslims.
00:14I raised the issue of industrial and state-on-state espionage.
00:19I raised the case of Jimmy Lai.
00:21I raised the fact that a number of British parliamentarians were under sanctions by the Chinese state.
00:27So diplomacy is about having the difficult conversations.
00:29My worry is that this Labour government seems rather too keen to please China than to hold China to account.
00:42That has got to change.
00:44And I would expect that the Prime Minister raised these issues in the most unambiguous terms in any conversations he has with the Chinese leadership.
