27 December - National morning forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Good morning. It's a bit of a role reversal out there today. If you saw the sunshine yesterday,
00:05it's likely to be a cloudier day to come. Conversely, in some areas that were cloudy
00:09yesterday, we should see at least some sunshine by this afternoon. It's a bit of a mixed start to
00:14the day then. So there is some frost around first thing and that will generally slowly melt and
00:18clear away. Then by this afternoon, it's likely to be western parts of Wales and the southwest
00:23of England in particular that hold on to the brightest conditions with some winter sunshine.
00:27Otherwise, it's likely to be a much cloudier day than it was on Friday.
00:30And that cloud will actually be thick enough to bring a few spots of light rain and drizzle across
00:34parts of northern England and eastern Scotland, particularly over the higher ground of the Pennines
00:38and the southern uplands. The best of the sunshine for Scotland and Northern Ireland
00:41generally towards the north and the west. And there will be this keen northeasterly breeze
00:46running down some eastern coast. So it will feel chilly wherever you are exposed to that wind on
00:50Saturday. And actually in the south, it will be a windier day compared to yesterday. Gusts of 30 to
00:5640 miles per hour perhaps across the Welsh mountains and the moors in the southwest.
01:00Despite this, temperatures generally up a degree or two compared to yesterday. So around average for
01:06the time of year, but certainly still feeling chilly underneath the cloud.
01:11Now, some patchy rain and drizzle will continue to work its way slowly southwestwards across northern
01:15England and into the Midlands as we go through the course of this evening. Perhaps a few spots of
01:18rain for more southern regions of the UK by the early hours as well. Skies tending to clear across many
01:23parts of mainland Scotland. And here we will see a widespread frost developing by tomorrow morning.
01:29Some freezing fog patches likely as well, particularly in the countryside. But the central
01:33belt could see some pretty dense fog patches by the end of the night. So here, some poor visibilities.
01:39Certainly need yourself some extra time if you are travelling. Otherwise though, the cloud will act
01:43like a bit of a blanket. So nowhere near as cold tonight for many of us compared to recent nights and
01:48temperatures easily holding up at four or five degrees in many of the towns and cities.
01:54That does mean that Sunday will start on a pretty grey note for many of us. Whether it's fog or
01:58whether it's low cloud, it will stay quite dull through much of the day on Sunday. Some brief breaks
02:04in the cloud by the afternoon, especially across more western areas. So western parts of Wales favoured
02:09for some sunshine. Kent and Sussex perhaps seeing some sunshine as well by tomorrow afternoon. But
02:14certainly Scotland will be favoured for the most prolonged periods of sunshine on Sunday. Although
02:19there could well be some freezing fog that lingers for much of the day, particularly across the central
02:24belt. And where the fog lingers, well, temperatures will really struggle to get much above freezing.
02:29But overall temperatures reaching highs between five and seven degrees Celsius, which isn't too far
02:34away from average. And it won't be as windy in the south on Sunday compared to today. So it won't feel quite
02:40as cold. Now it is set to stay generally dry, fine and settled as we go through the rest of 2025.
02:47High pressure is likely to remain dominant across the UK. That means it's going to stay fairly cloudy
02:52though. Despite the often dry weather, the best of any sunshine tend to be towards the north and the west.
02:57And where skies are clear overnight, well, we'll see some frost. And we could even see a few freezing fog patches
03:03here and there where winds are light enough, which could be quite slow to clear. And then towards the end of the year,
03:08towards Tuesday and more especially Wednesday, it could turn a bit colder and that could allow a few
03:12wintery showers to move down across more northeastern areas. Whatever you're up to over the weekend
03:17though, I do hope you have a good one and I'll see you again very soon.
