00:00Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jillian John visited the Papara mud
00:04volcano site on Christmas Day following the increase in activity which began the
00:08day prior affecting roads and the homes of villagers she tells us works on the
00:13access route that was cut off will begin this week we have looked at the interim
00:18repair strategy and a long-term solution so we are going to be on the ground from
00:23tomorrow commencing with that well at least look evaluating again starting
00:29some minimal repairs the major part of it will start between Tuesday and
00:35Wednesday according to the minister the road is in a considerable state of
00:39disrepair and she also mentions a bridge in the area which is an access point to
00:44business places that is in a critical condition she says her team is also
00:49looking at that as well and as for what the short term work to the access route
00:53will entail so if you notice there's some kind of humps in the road based on the
00:58activity of that mud volcano so in terms of just to give that access we are
01:03looking to grade and grading and cutting down of the high points of those peaks
01:08on the road in the kind of peak and trough kind of thing along the affected
01:12roadway we're gonna do some patching we're practical because some of it is not
01:16practical because you have little minor bridges also there beside that because
01:20we just spoke about so we do some patches we're practical using granular base course
01:25material or mill material John says patching with asphalt will also be done to
01:31restore limited vehicular access but for the long-term solution the ministry has
01:36looked at the fact that the site is one of reoccurring geotechnical instability due to
01:41the active mud volcano the proposed long-term measures include and this is from
01:46the engineers of ministry of works permanent closure of the affected section of that
01:51the parole establishment of an alternate on alternative roadway and we'll
01:56some are even saying on an extreme measure is relocation of the affected
02:00residents when necessary so but that really will be a kind of longer term as it
02:06stands now is really to get re-establish access as for the present state of the
02:11volcano the minister says she was told on Christmas Day that the tremors
02:15persisted throughout Christmas Eve and in the morning when they got up where they
02:20had fissures or cracks those cracks were more even more apparent so we had a two inch
02:26crack now it became a five inch crack so we've seen that even after the rumbling
02:29stopped the the foundation or the earth continued to move but not on Chris when I was
02:35doing Christmas Day there was no activity you just saw the outcome minister John
02:39also noted that the Kuva Tabakita Para Regional Corporation has committed to
02:44addressing a garbage issue identified during her visit Alicia Boucher TV6 news
