Canadian Brass is a Canadian brass quintet formed in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario, by Charles Daellenbach on tuba and Gene Watts on trombone. The group officially adopted the name Canadian Brass in 1971. Their American debut came in 1975 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., followed by an international visit to mainland China in 1977 as part of a cultural exchange. In 1979, they became the first chamber ensemble to solo on the main stage at Carnegie Hall. The group recorded more than 170 albums and videos, including the commercial LPs Canadian Brass (1974) and Canadian Brass: Pachelbel to Joplin (1974), the live album Live! (1985), The Pachelbel Canon: The Canadian Brass Plays Great Baroque Music (1980), The Mozart Album (1988), and Canadiana (2021). They commissioned and performed hundreds of transcriptions and original works for brass quintet. The ensemble appeared on major North American television networks, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and was featured on the Billboard charts in each decade of their existence.
