Erich Kunz, born on May 20, 1909 in Vienna, Austria, was an operatic baritone trained at the Vienna Academy of Music. He debuted in 1936/1937 at the Troppau City Theatre, then became a member at the Vienna State Opera in 1940, playing roles such as Figaro, Leporello, and Papageno. International appearances included the Royal Opera, London, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he debuted on November 26, 1952 as Leporello in Don Giovanni under Fritz Reiner, adding roles like Faninal in Der Rosenkavalier. Kunz’s final performances were held at the Vienna State Opera in the mid‑1970s; he died in Vienna on September 8, 1995.
