Georg Ots, born on March 21, 1920, in Petrograd, Russian SFSR, was an Estonian singer, actor, painter, and swimmer. He began his singing career during World War II while performing with Estonian State Art Ensembles in Yaroslavl. After the war, he studied at the Tallinn Conservatory under Tiit Kuusik and sang in the choir of the Estonian Opera Theatre. His first operatic appearance was a small role in Eugene Onegin in 1944. He later became the leading baritone of the Estonia Theatre, where he performed from 1951 until his death. He gained widespread popularity through his roles in operas such as Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, The Demon, and The Man from La Mancha. His fame grew even further after starring in the 1958 musical film Mister X, which made him a household name across the Soviet Union. Renowned for his rich voice and expressive performances, Ots also excelled in interpreting Estonian songs and works by composers including Schubert, Mussorgsky, and Tchaikovsky. Although opportunities to perform abroad were limited during the Soviet era, he became especially popular in Finland and also appeared in countries such as Egypt and Mongolia. He passed away on September 5, 1975.
