Siegfried Palm

Siegfried Palm, born on April 25, 1927, in Barmen, was a German cellist known for his interpretations of contemporary music. He began playing the cello at age nine under his father's guidance and later studied with Enrico Mainardi. Palm served as principal cellist in various orchestras, including the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg from 1947 to 1962 and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne until 1968. He premiered numerous cello concertos and contemporary chamber music, collaborating with composers such as Kagel, Ligeti, Xenakis, Penderecki, and Zimmermann. Palm taught at the Hochschule für Musik Köln starting in 1962 and served as its head from 1972 to 1976. He received several awards, including the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis in 1969 and 1976, and the Grand Prix du Disque International in 1972 and 1975. Palm passed away on June 6, 2005.
