Elizabeth Lloyd Holman, known professionally as Libby Holman, was born on May 23, 1904, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was an American socialite, actress, singer, and activist. She moved to New York City in the fall of 1924 to pursue acting. Her first theatre job was in a road company of The Fool (1925), and she made her Broadway debut in The Sapphire Ring (1925). Holman gained critical acclaim for her role in Merry-Go-Round (1927), where she sang the solo torch song "Hogan's Alley". Her breakthrough came with the lead role in The Little Show (1929), which featured the blues number "Moanin' Low" and marked the beginning of the golden age of Broadway revues. She passed away on June 18, 1971.
