Bayreuth Festival Orchestra

Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele is a seasonal German orchestra assembled each year for the Bayreuth Festival, the annual summer event dedicated to the stage works of Richard Wagner. Based at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, the orchestra was created to realize Wagner’s vision of presenting his operas, particularly Der Ring des Nibelungen, in a dedicated festival setting. Unlike traditional orchestras, it has no permanent membership, instead, musicians are recruited each season from leading German orchestras and other ensembles. Many performers return regularly, making the orchestra one of the most prestigious ensembles associated with Wagnerian performance. The orchestra made its debut at the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Although its repertoire is almost exclusively devoted to Wagner’s music, festival traditions have occasionally included performances of Beethoven’s Choral Symphony. Over the decades, the orchestra has been led by many of the most distinguished conductors in classical music, including Hans Richter, Hermann Levi, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, James Levine, Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Marek Janowski, and Pietari Inkinen. In addition to its festival performances, the orchestra has participated in numerous recordings and broadcasts under the direction of renowned conductors.
