Locksley Alphonso Green, known professionally as Jesse Green, was born on 5 July 1948 in Saint James, Jamaica. A singer and drummer, he began his career in the United Kingdom in the late 1960s as a member of the reggae group The Pioneers, remaining with the trio until the mid-1970s. After leaving the group, he launched a solo career that blended reggae, soul, funk, and disco. Green made his solo breakthrough in 1976 with the international hit "Nice and Slow", taken from his debut album Nice and Slow (1976). The single became a major success across Europe, reaching the UK Top 20 and establishing him as one of the leading figures of the reggae-disco crossover. He followed with the albums Come with Me (1978) and Monopoly (1982), producing further dancefloor favourites such as "Flip" and "Come with Me". Although his chart success declined during the 1980s, Green continued recording and performing internationally while his best-known songs remained popular on disco and reggae compilations. Several retrospective collections, including Nice and Slow: All the Hits and More (1994) and The Greatest Hits (2022), have kept his music in circulation, reflecting the enduring appeal of his blend of reggae rhythms, soulful vocals, and disco grooves.
