Louis Boyd Neel, also known as Boyd Neel, born on July 19, 1905, in Blackheath, London, was an English and later Canadian conductor and academic. He initially pursued medicine, studying at Caius College, Cambridge, and qualifying as a physician in 1930. While practicing medicine, Neel formed the Boyd Neel Orchestra in 1932, which debuted at the Aeolian Hall, London, on June 22, 1933. The orchestra's early releases included recordings of Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Britten's Simple Symphony. Neel conducted for Sadler's Wells Opera from 1944 to 1946. In 1952, he became Dean of the Royal Conservatory of Music at Toronto, Ontario, where he served for 18 years. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1953 and appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1972. Neel died on September 30, 1981, in Toronto.
