Mavis Chloe Rivers, born on May 19, 1929 in Apia, Samoa, was a Samoan and New Zealand jazz singer. She began her recording career in 1952 with the Lloyd Sly Quartette at Stebbing Studios, releasing singles under labels such as Zodiac, Capitol and Stebbings. Rivers moved to the United States in 1954, where she married Filipino singer and bass player Glicerio Reyes "David" Catingub. Her debut album Take a Number was released by Capitol Records in 1959. In 1960, she received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Mavis Chloe Rivers' discography includes several notable albums such as Hooray for Love (1960), The Simple Life (1960) and We Remember Mildred Bailey (1965). She also collaborated with other musicians, including Red Norvo and Shorty Rogers. After a concert in Los Angeles, California on May 29, 1992 she passed away due to a stroke.
